EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
SCIENCE OLYMPIAD
"The Chippewa Middle School Science Olympiad Team is getting underway! First meeting for all interested students and all parents who can attend will be Friday, September 27th, at 3:05 PM in the Chippewa Cafeteria. Science Olympiad is a competitive team that welcomes all students to compete in a variety of science-based events. The 2025 Event Rules describe each event in detail. Usually students compete in about 3 events. Interested students should fill in this Google Form, and parents fill in this Parent Information Form. The time commitment will be most Fridays after school with additional time spent on building or studying on your own, and we will attend at least one Invitational Tournament in January or February. The Regional Tournament will be March 15, 2025. The top few teams from Regionals attend the State Tournament on April 26, 2025. There will be a registration fee, and parent involvement is needed. Contact Coach Kirsten Robinson at kirstenfrobinson@gmail.com or Yunyan Shen at shenp86@gmail.com with any questions."
TCBA YOUTH CYCLING CLUB
The TCBA Youth Cycling Club is hosting the 4th annual Fall Fun Ride coming up on October 19th, 2024 from 9am-12pm! We will start at the parking lot in front of the Supreme Court and take the scenic River Trail around the Lansing area. The fall colors will provide a perfect backdrop for this gorgeous ride, fueled by snacks provided by our generous sponsors, TCBA. This ride (under the Tri-County Bicycle Association) not only offers a chance for adventure but also an opportunity for learning, connection, and community involvement. So saddle up, grab your helmets, and join us for a morning of a safe, fun, educational, and explorational event as we pedal through pretty sights of fall in Michigan.
We will also need adult ride leaders to ensure the safety of the ride, so there is a volunteer option when signing up. Your support is very much appreciated, please help spread the word about this event!
Registration is open, sign up here:

Mathematical Circle
Mathematical Circles are a form of education enrichment and outreach that bring mathematicians and mathematical scientists into direct contact with middle and high school students. These students, and sometimes their teachers, meet with mathematical professionals in an informal setting, after school or on weekends, to work on interesting problems or topics in mathematics. The goal is to get the students excited about mathematics by providing a setting that encourages them to become passionate about mathematics. Kinawa/Chippewa Mathematical Circle will be highly interactive, with the learning proceeding through games, stories, or hands-on activities. Athletes have sports teams that deepen their involvement with sports; math circles can play a similar role for kids who like to think about math. One thing all math circles have in common is that the students enjoy learning mathematics, and the circle gives them a social context in which to do so.
The Kinawa/Chippewa Math Circle is open to all students in grades 5-8, and we will meet on Tuesday evenings from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Mrs. Murembya’s room 303 at Kinawa. This year’s math circle is being led by Professor Rajesh Kulkarni from MSU and Mrs. Murembya. Students don’t need to sign up in advance, or even attend every week; they may just show up. Our first meeting for the 2024-25 school year will be on Tuesday, October 1st at 5:30 p.m. Students should bring paper, a pencil, and their love of mathematics. At the first meeting, we will give you information about where students should access handouts (in advance) to bring with them to all future meetings. If you have questions, please contact Marian Murembya at marian.murembya@okemosk12.net.
