A Message from the Principal
Hello Woodland Families,
I can't believe that it is almost February! Report cards were sent home with your child this week. I hope that you have had the opportunity to review your child's report card with them. I encourage you to celebrate their improvement, growth, or areas where they are succeeding. It is so important to celebrate student's achievements, growth, and progress. If there are areas where you see your student still has some room to grow, it is helpful to set goals with them. Let your student know what they can do to continue to excel and learn by setting achievable goals with them.
This is the time of year when winter weather takes a toll on school attendance, particularly making it to school on time. Snow and rain can make it hard to get your children to school. So can illnesses such as colds, flu, and fevers.
These absences, even if they are excused, break the routine of daily attendance that contributes to students feeling connected and engaged in learning. Also, arriving to school late or leaving early have a significant impact on the students' school day. Please consider these steps to keep your children healthy and in school this winter.
1. Develop back-up plans for getting your children to school. Check who can give your children a ride if you can’t take them, or consider sending your child on the school bus.
2. Stomach pain and headaches can be signs of anxiety and may not be reasons for keeping a child home. If you feel that anxiety or stress is playing a role, talk to your child’s teacher, myself, or your medical provider about how best to support your child.
3. Encourage children to wash their hands before and after eating and after using the restroom.
4. Avoid sharing cups and utensils with other individuals.
5. Dress your children for the cold weather. If you need help with winter clothing, call the Woodland Main Office.
6. Encourage healthy habits such as getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, drinking fluids and getting exercise.
7. If your children need to stay home for a prolonged period due to illness, talk to your child’s teacher to find out about resources, including computer or internet access, that they can use at home to keep learning once they feel well enough.
Let us know how we can help you. If you’re having trouble, need resources or advice, please call us at 248-537-6900 and ask to speak with Mrs. Montano, Ms. Caton or Mrs. Rosinski.
Thank you for partnering with us! If you would like more information about school attendance, please see Attendanceworks.org.
Have a nice weekend,
Mrs. Katalin Rosinski
Principal

Woodland Google Calendar
We know that keeping track of all the dates and events can be overwhelming, so we have decided to try and consolidate all that information to make it a little easier! We have created a Google Calendar where we will put all of our events and activities that take place. You can add the Google Calendar app to your phone to easily check and see what is going on each day. You can also integrate the calendar into your currently used phone calendar. We hope that this calendar will create a seamless way to keep track of all the things going on here at Woodland.
You can see the Woodland Google calendar here.
You can find instructions on how to subscribe to this calendar here.
You can find other helpful tips and tricks on using Google Calendar here.
The calendar will be updated daily with events, activities, things to remember, and due dates. This information will also be shared through our normal communication methods of email, text messages, and Facebook posts. We hope this calendar will be an additional tool to stay updated on events taking place here at Woodland.

Please remember that Woodland is a Peanut-Free and Tree-Nut Free school. Do not send any snacks or lunch items that "may contain nuts" or "manufactured on the same equipment or in a facility that contains nut products". We have some students and staff in our building that have very severe allergies to any kind of nuts, both peanuts and tree nuts. Thank you for your cooperation in this very serious matter to keep our everyone safe.
Lost & Found
Woodland's Lost and Found is OVERFLOWING! It is located by the gym and cafeteria. If your child is missing a jacket, sweatshirt, lunchbox, etc., please remind your child to look in the Lost and Found. Parents, please plan on checking out the lost and found if you are in the school because all unclaimed items will be donated before our Mid-Winter Break in February.
Positivity Project - P2
Social Intelligence
This week, our school community focused on the trait of Social Intelligence. This means you are aware of other people's thoughts and feelings. You understand why they do things.
Social intelligence refers to a person's ability to understand and manage interpersonal relationships. It is distinct from a person's IQ or "book smarts." It includes an individual's ability to understand, and act on, the feelings, thoughts, and behaviors of other people. This type of intelligence can take place "in the moment" of face-to-face conversations but also appears during times of deliberate thinking. It involves emotional intelligence and self-awareness.
Why Does It Matter?
Social intelligence helps individuals build relationships and is important to numerous aspects of a person's life. It allows an individual to form friendships and alliances. And, it assists a person against being taken advantage of. People with social intelligence can "read" other people's faces and know what motivates them. Social intelligence builds over time and as a person ages. In this sense, it is similar to the character strength of perspective.
To practice and encourage the character strength of prudence with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2) where together you will watch a video, read a quote and talk about the answers to three questions.
After Winter Break, we will focus on Forgiveness.
