March 2025
Tisdale Middle & Secondary School
Principal's Message
We are well into the second semester and the last half of the school year. Awesome job at surviving those cold winter days and finding a way to get your children to school, even when the buses weren’t running. And thank you for coming out to support our Tornado athletics – basketball and curling teams have been busy and are just ramping up for playoffs.
Our staff would like to commend the School Community Council for organizing a lunch for our staff during the NESD staff appreciation week in February. What a great way to make our entire staff get the warm and fuzzies, even on a cold winter’s day! The SRC also made an effort to make February a little more enjoyable with their fun spirit week before the break. Thank you to all the families that donated baking for the SRC sale! In addition, thank you for your TeleMiracle donations. Our SRC seniors love to organize the noon carnival and watch the middle years students enjoy themselves – all for a great cause!
We will be starting to organize for Grad 2025. All graduates and their families should attend our only in-person meeting at 7 pm in the band room on Tuesday, March 4th. Stay tuned for dates on evening meetings for grade 9 students and grade 10/11 students as we start to consider high school course selection for the fall.
This month our SCC has also arranged for Laura Lawrence to present to our students on the afternoon of March 5th. Laura’s message is about how to keep ourselves safe and healthy in this digital age. She is presenting to just parents/guardians later that same evening in our band room at 6:30 pm, so please come out and support our SCC efforts and pick up some tips on parenting teens through these difficult times.
Finally, don’t forget to sign up to conference with your child’s teachers. Evening conferences will be on Wednesday, March 12th from 5:00-7:30 and again on Tuesday, March 18th from 5:00-7:30.
Hang in there! Spring will eventually get here!
I would like to take a moment to recognize Rebecca Lyu for her outstanding achievement as the Grade 6 Grit award winner. She skated for the first time in gym class, demonstrating remarkable perseverance and doing exceptionally well. Rebecca's positive attitude and kindness toward her peers truly stand out, and it's inspiring to see her always happy and encouraging others. Congrats, Rebecca and keep up the great work.
In recognition of his growth, resilience, integrity, and togetherness in learning, Jaxson Thomas is presented with this month’s Grade 7 GRIT award. Your quiet dedication to learning while having fun with your peers has been great to see throughout this school year. You have faced challenges with determination and demonstrated resilience in every step of your journey. Your integrity sets a strong example for your peers, and your ability to foster a sense of togetherness in the classroom creates a positive and supportive learning environment for all. Jaxson, your efforts have not gone unnoticed, and we celebrate the impact you have made on our school community. Keep striving and growing!
The Grade 8 monthly GRIT award winner is Delorme Nawakayas. Delorme has made a huge improvement over the past few months in having more positive interactions with his classmates and adults in the building. He has become an enthusiastic learner, and tries to do his best on his daily assignments. He tackles his assignments with enthusiasm and is always determined to get them done on time. His commitment to his work doesn’t go unnoticed by his teachers.
This month’s Grade 9 GRIT award goes to Kayson Adams. Kayson shows up ready to learn and do his best. He works to learn concepts and isn’t afraid to ask for help if he needs it. He continues to grow inside and outside the classroom by setting attainable goals for himself. He demonstrates integrity and togetherness by helping others. Great job Kayson!
The Grade 10 GRIT shoutout goes to Kane Huston. From overcoming challenges with a positive attitude to always pushing himself to reach new heights, Kane has been a great addition to the TMSS student body. Whether tackling difficult assignments or learning from setbacks, his perseverance and determination are going to take him far in life. Keep working hard and striving for greatness both academically and athletically. Congrats Kane.
The Grade 11 GRIT award is going to Rajveer Pabla. Rajveer demonstrates GRIT daily in Visual Arts 20. In addition, Raj is one of our most active volunteers in the school. He volunteered to chop onions for the Christmas Dinner and is passionate about helping out with our athletic programs. Rajveer is quick to start a conversation with anyone and is a positive ambassador of TMSS. Keep up the good work Raj!
This months Grade 12 GRIT award goes to Maesyn Schwanke. Maesyn works very hard in the shops and is someone you can count on when help is needed. He works well with whoever is in his group, and makes sure everyone is able to contribute. If there is a job that needs to get done around the shops or around the school, Maesyn is the guy to ask. Good work Maesyn!

The Tornados Sr. Boys A basketball team has been having an outstanding season, showcasing skill, determination, and teamwork on the court.
The season tipped off with a league game in Nipawin, followed by a competitive tournament in Humboldt. As the schedule progressed into January and February, the team participated in tournaments in Fort Qu’Appelle, Melfort, and Tisdale.
The Tornados put on an impressive performance in Fort Qu’Appelle, playing some of their best basketball. The Melfort tournament, while challenging, didn’t yield the results the team had hoped for. However, the players remained focused and determined as they prepared for the Tisdale home tournament.
The Tisdale tournament featured strong competition, including teams from Creighton, Big River, La Ronge, Sandy Bay, and both Tisdale squads. The Tornados started strong with decisive victories over La Ronge and Sandy Bay, earning a spot in the tournament final against Creighton.
The championship game proved to be the most thrilling contest of the season. It was a hard-fought battle, with both teams leaving everything on the court. The atmosphere in the gym was electric, with fans on the edge of their seats as the game came down to the final 10 seconds. In the end, Creighton narrowly secured the victory, edging out the Tornados by just two points.
Despite the close loss, the Tornados demonstrated incredible resilience and competitive spirit, making their school and community proud. With the season still underway, the team looks forward to continuing their strong play and building on their success.
Coach Keith Chapman
The Sr Girls basketball teams have had a busy February. On February 11, both the A and B teams played in their respective league finals. The B team played well against Carrot River. The A team hosted a successful game against Hudson Bay, winning the Nessac Championship. The Tournament team not only had a lot of fun at a tournament in Hudson Bay but also had much success in their games and skills competition.
They will continue their season practicing and playing exhibition games, preparing for Regional playoffs, which will take place on March 14 and 15.
Coaches: Jill Pollon (A) and Riley & Jocelyn Hobbins (B)
The Junior A Boys Basketball team had an incredible season, finishing as NESSAC Basketball Champions! From the first practice to the finals, the boys brought energy, hustle, and determination to every game. Their commitment to grit was key to their success, and it all paid off with a championship win. Huge thanks to the players for their hard work, the parents for their support, and the school community for cheering us on all season!
Coaches Ram and Jordan Bagsit
The Jr B Boys basketball team had a great year of learning. With a small team of only 9 players, the boys each saw a lot of court time this year. They showed a lot of growth and togetherness in their season, and were great Tornado representatives. We have enjoyed coaching you this year, and hope you all continue on in your high school basketball careers.
Coaches Devon Ernst and Mrs. Kovach
The Jr A girls basketball Tornados started their season with a mix of anticipation and uncertainty. Early games were challenging, and the team struggled to find their footing. By the latter part of the season, the Tornadoes had developed strong team chemistry and confidence. This impressive turnaround from their early-season struggles highlighted their growth and determination.
We ended with a 4th overall placement in our league. Thanks for a great season!
Coach Megan Benoit
Thank you, A&W!
TMSS Basketball program would like to sincerely thank our local A&W owners, staff and customers for their unbelievable donation this year. During the entire season, A&W asked customers if they would like to round up their orders to the nearest dollar in support of TMSS basketball. By doing this, they were able to collect and donate an AMAZING $939.07 for our basketball program!
