On December 3, 1959: Thomas E. LaGuardia Jr. opens Giant Supermarket in Elizabethton. The massive grocery store boasts a 50-Cent dinner in the restaurant and over 225 parking spaces. Over 20,000 customers visit in the first three days. The Giant brand would eventually go on to be bought out and become the modern-day Food Lion grocery chain.
