February 2024
Transform Yourself. Transform Your Community.
Our School's Mission
Our School's Why
Dear LWSH Families and Caregivers,
Greetings LWSH Families, Caregivers, and Scholars,
Happy February! February is Black History Month, and we have a lot of special events that celebrates African Americans and their heritage. On Thursday, February 8th, MetroHealth will be hosting a panel discussion between some of our 10th grade scholars and MetroHealth's CEO Dr. Steed. During second semester, our 10th grader scholars embarked on a history project with Mr. Retherford to explore inequities that have plagued the black community. During the panel discussion, Dr. Steed will be asking them about their experience and learning through this project, and how it relates to the inequities we see in healthcare today. For more information for this and other events, see the Family, Student, and Community Calendar Events in this newsletter.
On another note, all scholars have received their semester 1 report cards and Parent-Teacher Conferences to discuss your child's progress will be held on Thursday, February 8th from 12:40pm - 5:05pm at the Main Campus located at 3202 West 30th Street. This will be an early-release day for students, and they will be dismissed at 11:55am if they do a grab and go lunch; or at 12:35pm if they decide to stay for lunch. These conferences should be student led. Therefore, we ask that your scholar attends with you and brings their device to access their quarter 1 and quarter 2 work.
During our Student-Led Conferences, we will be offering these additional sessions and resources:
- Mandatory Senior Night and Meeting with Parents: Our Say Yes Family Specialist will be assisting parents in completing their FAFSA ID and FAFSA application from 1:35pm – 5:35pm this evening. There is a mandatory meeting for all seniors and parents to discuss senior activities and expectations. Completing a FAFSA gives your senior access to federal grant money to attend college upon graduation.
OELPA Sessions: All of our identified English Language Learners will be taking the Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment (OELPA) beginning the week of February 12th. These are assessments designed to assess how well our English Language Learners (ELL) are able to speak, write, and listen / respond to the English language. Students are assessed each year with a goal to increase their language proficiency levels until they test out of the OELPA. Therefore, we will be holding an informational session for OELPA during Parent-Teacher Conferences. One will be for English/Spanish speaking, and another for Swahili speaking families. The session will last approximately one hour from 2:30pm – 3:30pm. See the Parent-Teacher Conference Agenda below for more details.
- On-Track for Graduation Status: Our School Counselor will be available from 1:05pm – 5:05pm to discuss your child’s on-track status for graduation. She will access your child’s transcripts and let you know what the student needs to graduate. She can also share his/her progress in credit recovery if your child is enrolled. These sessions are for ALL grade levels.
