Mark Your Calendars - 8th Grade BBQ 9/14
The tradition of the 8th grade BBQ is back!
This year's BBQ will take place on the Deal Field on Saturday, September 14th from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. This is a fun, easy event and a great way to build relationships with students and families early in the school year. All 8th grade students, families, and teachers are encouraged to join, even if it's just a quick roll-through on your way to brunch, soccer games, or however else you plan to spend the weekend. This should be fun and easy for everyone!
We need your help! If you are able to support by volunteering, please sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040449A8AC23A2FD0-50439912-2024

Mr. Haller - Woolloomooloo Team Lead – Math/ELA
Hello Woolloomooloo Families!
It has been an amazing first week with our scholars! Every student on Team Woolloomooloo has been nothing but kind, gracious and eager to learn! I've had the pleasure to stop into each classroom and have seen some amazing work being done in the first week. Even during our first 8th grade Assembly, we got a positive shout out from Mr. Rottman about how quietly we came into the auditorium and sat down in our assigned area. Great job team!
We've got our first celebration coming up next weekend on Saturday, 9/14/2024 from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm Deal will be hosting the 8th Grade BBQ where teachers, families and students will enjoy free food, music and a bunch of outdoor activities. I look forward to stopping by and saying hello to our Woolloomooloo families and feel free to come up and say hello!
For next week, we will still have extended first period on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, we will follow the Bell 1 schedule (MWF). As the first week wraps up, please make sure you check in with teachers or below in the newsletter, on classroom materials, homework and canvas updates.
I hope everyone has a happy 3-day Labor Day Weekend and I am looking forward to seeing everyone next week!

Hello!
It has been an awesome first week with the kids. We went through the school culture plan and expectations in science classroom. Also, we completed the hand washing Lab and introduction to scientific thinking (Unit 0).
Next week, we will continue unit 0 on Tuesday; how to calculate the best value and uncertainty in an experiment. How to identify the different variables in every experiment.
In addition, we will have our first formative assessment on Friday.
A big thank you to all the families that supported us with classroom supplies.
Reminders
Please read and sign the science syllabus, safety contract and technology forms if you have not done so.
Mr. Turchetta - English/Language Arts
Hello everyone!
It was a fantastic first week! This week, we got to know each other through different activities like 10 Things in Common. We also created Class Agreements that will help make a positive learning environment for everyone. We did one of my favorite activities called Are You Clear? We ended the week on creating 6-word memoirs. Be sure to ask your student on more info on these activities because we had a lot of fun with them!
Next week, we will begin our first unit, Dreaming in America. Our focal text for this unit is A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry. We will have a class set, but also suggest students getting their own copies to help with activities and assignments that may be out of class. To introduce the unit, we will be doing various activities that have students start to think about the "American Dream". The activities and texts will have students wonder what is the "American Dream" and is it attainable for everyone.
Have a great weekend!
Deal Library Corner
This week 6th grade students will be visiting the library with their ELA classes for the first time this year. They will be choosing one book to use for personal reading and for their ELA 40 book challenge. I will be asking all students to be responsible with their books this year and return them in a timely manner. We do not charge fines for lost books, but I do ask students to donate a replacement book if one is lost and if they are able. Students should always come to me to let me know when a book is lost or damaged so that I can update the system and remove it from their record. If a student leaves Deal with overdue books on their account, they will be asked to pay for them before they graduate high school so it is always a good idea to let me know so that we can prevent additional expenses to families.
I will be sending overdue notices out once a month. These notices do not include the titles of the books as we want to protect the students' privacy. Students and families can login to their account in Follett Destiny (Can be found in Clever) to see more specific information about the books that they have out. Families can also reach out to me with any questions or concerns.
Our library book orders are going to be sent out at the end of October. I am asking students to send me any book recommendations that they would like to see in our library. Students and families can make book recommendations at the link below:

In addition, families can refer to our library's website (aka LibGuide) for more information and links related to the library, reading, newsletters, research, and more at the link below:
