Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 18th October 2024
Enriching Learning at School
People Who Help Us
The Reception children have been learning all about People Who Help Us this week, especially people in the emergency services. On Thursday Mr Wilby came to visit us. He is a soldier in the army. He showed us his medals, uniform, the kit he has to carry and answered lots of our questions about what he does. He also taught us how to march like soldiers. It was great to hear about the job of a soldier and we had a brilliant time!
River Skell Project
Year 6 have been learning about local rivers and, on Wednesday, they were lucky enough to have a visit from the River Skell Project. They discussed how rivers are formed and labelled the different parts of the river; looked at what beavers do and why that it important; and looked at the different ways rivers are polluted. The children were also given the chance to enrich their science learning by using microscopes to look at the river invertebrates in more detail. They used classification keys to identify and categorise the different animals living in our local rivers. A fantastic and practical way to learn about rivers and our local area; thank you to the Project members who came to school to enrich our curriculum.

Maths Update
Our Maths Leaders, Mrs Beckett and Mrs Babington, would like to share this update with parents:
As a school, we are embarking on the Mastering Number programme that is being rolled out by the Maths Hub, nationally.
In KS1, the project aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number.
The programme is also being rolled out in KS2. Knowledge of multiplication and division and its applications forms the single most important aspect of the KS2 curriculum, and is the gateway to success at secondary school. This project enables pupils to develop fluency in multiplication and division facts, and a confidence and flexibility with number that exemplifies good number sense.
The Mastering Number Programme is taught for 15 minutes daily, in addition to the Maths lesson. As a result, it has replaced our previous number and times table programme as it encompasses all number facts across the school. We are no longer sending out the number fact (KS1) and times table (KS2) homework as the sheets worked alongside our old programme. Instead, we request that children take time to visit Times Table Rockstars, Numbots and the White Rose 1-Minute Maths apps to practise their number facts.
Thank You and Congratulations to the Friends of the School!
A huge thank you to our Friends of the School for running the Scholastic Book Fair last week. The fair was busy throughout the week and we are grateful to parents who helped to run the stall, as well as those who bought items. Through running the Book Fair, school receives money to spend on brand new books for our classrooms and library, so as well as helping your child to enjoy reading you are helping other children too.
Congratulations are also due to the Friends' committee who have been nominated for an award at the Ripon Together St Wilfrid's Stars Scheme which celebrates those who, often in their own time, make Ripon such a great place in which to live and work. We hope the committee members enjoy the reception in Ripon Cathedral next week. They certainly deserve it!
