April 2024
Wishing you a blessed and joyful Easter filled with love and renewal.
Portrait of a Don Bosco Graduate
Happy April Don Bosco Community! I hope you all had a blessed Holy Week and come into April with a renewed sense of Faith and family!
Over the past four years, BCSS has embarked on a strategic planning journey. Part of that journey was to create foundational documents to guide the work that we do. Last month, I shared one of Bosco Catholic School System’s foundational documents, our mission statement.
This month, I would like to share with you a more specific document born from the mission statement. It is called “Portrait of a Graduate”. You will see that this document really hones in on more specific criteria that we use to define the type of student that we, with your support, aim to graduate as a student of Don Bosco High School.
We take our role as educators of the whole child very seriously at Don Bosco High School. All of the work that we do circles back to ensuring that the steps we take are purposeful towards graduating students who exhibit the traits identified in the Profile of a Graduate.
We are honored to partner with you on this journey!
Blessings,
Mrs. Douglas

Booster Club Spring Fundraiser
As you know, the BCSS Booster Club provides significant financial support that allows us to have a stellar activities and athletics program. Booster Club's Spring Fundraiser is a critical component in the budget each year. The group has reached out to alumni but wanted to give all families and supporters a chance to participate. Check out the letter to see how your donation by April 8 can enter you in a drawing for a $500 prize and uphold the tradition of excellence for students.
Seniors Treat Seniors
On Wednesday, April 17, the seniors will be hosting Seniors Treat Seniors. This event is a time for students to celebrate important seniors in their lives by attending Mass and a social in Saint Mary Commons.

ISASP this Month
As the time approaches quickly for ASASP testing for our 9-11 students, please take the time to talk as a family, prepare and plan ahead!
Choir Performances for your Calendar
The high school choir will be performing at the State Solo and Ensemble contest that is hosted right here at Don Bosco on Saturday, April 13. We have 3 ensembles and 5 solos performing that day.
Family and friends are welcome to come listen to any performances occurring that day. If you are unable to attend, you can still hear the beautiful music at our spring concert on Wednesday, April 17, at 6 PM. This concert will also feature our middle school choir.
We hope to see you there!
Mrs. Knepper
This event is for current 8th-10th grade students and families. Our goal is to share high school requirements and all of the academic and other opportunities available at Don Bosco. 6:00-6:45, you’ll hear from our College and Career Coach Ms. Martin and others.
Families of 8th-10 graders should watch for an email with details and the registration link to come early or stay late for a tour or appointment. Tell any friends who might be interested in Bosco, they are invited!
National Nutrition Month
In an attempt to highlight how much sugar is included in sugary drinks, I set up a display in the lunchroom for the 6-12th students. This visual demonstrated the equivalent of tablespoons of sugar included in each sugary drink. We discussed making changes to their beverage choices by substituting sugary drinks with healthier options.

Bosco Plant Sale
Our horticulture class has been busy starting bedding plants for this May's sale. Plan to join us! We will have quite a variety for you to choose from.
The good news does not stop there! Mr. Mikita is proud to announce that a new 11' X 24' greenhouse will soon be constructed in place of the old one you may have noticed slowly disintegrating over time. Our new Pro Estate Greenhouse, from FarmTek out of Dyersville, is set for delivery in April and will hopefully be constructed and in use for the horticulture class' plant sale May 10-12. The extra space and improved growing conditions in this state-of-the-art greenhouse will allow horticulture students to learn more by conducting additional planted-related experiments. The larger structure will allow the class and school to supply many more bedding plants for residents of Gilbertville and surrounding areas. It will allow us to hold additional sales throughout the year with plants available for other occasions besides spring.
If you or anyone you know would like to volunteer to help with teardown of the two old greenhouses and/or construction of the new greenhouse, we would appreciate your assistance. Contact Myron Mikita at mmikita@boscocatholic.org. If you would like to donate to help with the concrete work, benches, tables, and other needs for the greenhouse we welcome that as well. We are anxious to put our new greenhouse into use. Thank you!
