Third Grade Reading Guarantee Update
May 2024
What is the Third Grade Reading Guarantee?
Ohio Department of Education & Workforce created The Third Grade Reading Guarantee in 2012, it is a process that states your child’s school has to determine how well he or she is reading at the beginning of each school year from Kindergarten through Grade 3.
During the past few years, Ohio schools have been required to retain third graders who do not meet promotional score on Ohio State Test Grade 3 English Language Arts Test or i-Ready, the district’s alternative assessment. Students are administered the Grade 3 OST English Language Arts Test (fall, spring and summer) and the I-Ready Test (September, December and April)
The 2023-24 Ohio State Test for Grade 3 English Language Arts promotion score is:
· Overall Reading Score: 690
· Reading Sub score: 48
· I-Ready Promotion Score: 515
However, beginning in the 2023-24 School Year, Ohio Department of Education & Workforce, has established an opportunity for parents or guardians to exempt their Grade 3 child from the Third Grade Reading Guarantee retention component under Ohio Law (ORC 3313.608) via the newly created Parent Request Exemption Process.
Parent Request Exemption Process
In consultation with the student’s reading teacher and principal, the parent or guardian can request that a student be promoted to Fourth Grade regardless of their child’s Ohio State Test for Grade 3 English Language Arts score. The parent must complete the Parent Exemption Request form to finalize this process. The school will assist the parent with how to access this document via the parent portal.
Students promoted to Fourth Grade through this exemption must continue to receive intensive reading instruction and be placed on a Reading Improvement Monitoring Plan until the student demonstrates that they are reading at a proficient level (700) as indicated by their Ohio State Test English Language Art Tests.

Dear Parents & Caregivers,
This is a friendly reminder that each Avalon scholar must complete the following each week in iReady:
- 45 minutes of Math
- 45 minutes of Reading
We need your continued support in achieving this goal!
With all hands on deck, we can ensure that this happens each week.
Thank you so much for your continued support and cooperation in this.
Together, we can help our Avalon scholars finish this school year STRONG!
Third Grade Breakfast - April 15
They took the ELA portion of the OST during April 17 - April 18. They took the Math portion of the OST during April 30 - May 1.
Our amazing Avalon faculty and staff rallied around and supported our third grade scholars in an incredible way!
On April 12, Avalon staff held a big "Third Grade Clap Out" around the library to cheer on our third grade scholars!
On April 15, Avalon hosted a "Third Grade Breakfast" which consisted of a delicious breakfast provided by Chris Cakes of Ohio, a special message from local news station 10TV NEWS, and supportive cards on the tables for each student.
The breakfast menu offered freshly cooked pancakes, chicken sausage (no pork), donuts, muffins, and juice.
The scholars also watched a video from our local 10TV news station that had a message directly to Avalon third graders!
SPECIAL THANKS to all of the staff who supported and coordinated this fun event, Chris Cakes of Ohio, and 10TV NEWS!
Check out the fun and smiles below!

Great job!

Ms. Straughter's Class
In Math, we have been focused on geometry.
Scholars are working on identifying various shapes and their attributes. They are also learning about three types of angles: right, acute, and obtuse. Some vocabulary words the scholars learned were: rhombus, quadrilateral, parallelogram, parallel lines, intersecting and perpendicular lines.
We will continue to learn this standard for the next couple of weeks.
Our I Can statement is "I CAN identify 2 dimensional shapes and their attributes."
Our Success Criteria is "I know I am successful when I can draw and name a quadrilateral with specific attributes."
Mr. Whyte's Class
In Math, scholars have been working hard on telling time (elapsed time), as well as learning about Mass and Volume and their units of measurement.
In Science, scholars have learning about the importance of our nature resources and why it is important to recycle and take care of environment.
Mr. Bell's Class
In Reading & Writing, scholars are currently working on some fun writing projects to end the year out. The scholars had to write an assignment about an invention that they would create. They had to present their invention to the class, and the class voted for their favorite.
The winners were able to receive a cupcake as their prize.
As we enter into the month of May, the scholars will be working on creating slideshow presentations about creating their own cities and some other fun topics!
Principal's PBIS Positive Message
Hello Avalon Parents & Caregivers!
Part of PBIS, whole-child supports also includes an often overlooked tip: that everyone needs good quality sleep!
As the weather gets warmer kids will want to stay up later and play longer.
Here is what you can do to help ensure that your child is properly rested for school:
Be sure to maintain a proper bedtime.
Keep good schedules and routines.
Have a way to help kids wind down after a long day( use the "Three B" routine (bath, book, and bed).
Monitor sleep quality (how long does it take for the child to fall asleep?).
Does the child sleep all night? If not, is nighttime arousal a habit? If so, a doctor may need to be consulted.
Thanks again for your continued support and cooperation in ensuring your scholar's success!
