Hamlin Middle School Newsletter
February 2025
Principal's Message
Greetings Hamlin Families,
In our November newsletter we shared our school improvement goals for this school year. Most students have completed their Winter Benchmarks, so we wanted to how we are progressing toward our goals.
School Improvement Targets:
Target 1:
Reduce the percentage of students at risk or at high risk in reading comprehension. HMS students will show increased understanding in grade level content in all content areas by reducing reading risk in comprehension from 45%-30%.
Target 2:
Hamlin students will show improved behavior indicated by increasing the percent of students with 0-1 behavior referrals from 69% to 85% throughout the 2024-25 school year.
Behavioral Data:
The first two graphs represent our behavior triangle. A healthy school culture is one where 80-85% of students fall within the green. The triangle on the left represents the 2023-24 school year and the one on the right represents where we are up to the end of January. Currently 92% of our Hamlin students have received 0-1 behavior referrals.
The second two graphs are a comparison of referrals per day for 2023-24 and 2024-25. The graph on the left shows that during the months of December 2023 & January 2024 compared to December 2024 & January 2025. This is definitely a data point to celebrate!
We continue to be proud and thankful for the hard work of both our staff and students this school year. Go Loggers!
Thank you for all you do to support your students and our staff as we work to make Hamlin a place where all students are safe and can learn!
Sincerely,
Brandi Starck
Principal

Staff Spotlight
John Sperry-Title Coordinator
Meet Mr. SperryJohn Sperry is new to Hamlin this year and we are excited to add his experience and personality to our staff family. John comes to Hamlin after 17 years at Agnes Stewart Middle School where he taught 7th Grade English Language Arts and Social Studies for all of those years. John is currently in the U of O Administrator program with aspirations to someday become a middle school administrator.
As our title 1 Coordinator, John is responsible for making sure all of our students receive the specialized instruction they need to succeed by providing analysis of student benchmark and progress monitoring data. While this is a departure from teaching, it is integral to his future goals as an administrator.
As part of his goals at Hamlin, John has undertaken our Student Voice team where he works with students to build a culture of inclusivity and belonging at Hamlin by organizing everything from spirit activities to kindness initiatives, and multimedia experiences like Loggers Live, our weekly YouTube Morning show, and a student-hosted podcast coming soon.
John’s wife Sarah, to whom he’s been married for nearly 24 years, is also a teacher in the district at Briggs Middle School, and their 2 oldest daughters also work as classified employees in the district: Arwen(22) works in Agnes Stewart’s front office, and Ellie(19) works right here at Hamlin as an instructional EA. Their three younger children, Jack(17), Alice(13), and Mina (11) are all students in Springfield.
For fun, John dabbles in a lot of different activities. Having been a drummer for 35 years, John can be seen playing around Lane County with The Real Gone Trio, a rockabilly band started by Manny Plascencia, the Assistant Principal at Yolanda Elementary. John and Many have been playing together off and on since 2004. John has also spent time photographing college sports for 24/7 Sports and CBS Sports where he was the staff photographer for DuckTerritory.com for 7 years. John has self-published 4 novels, and likes to play around in his woodworking shop when he has time.
John loves working with the staff and students at Hamlin, and looks forward to many more years as an educator at Hamlin.
Student Voice
Exciting news for Student Voice! As we enter the second semester, our group is becoming a permanent advisory class, giving us more time to plan events, activities, and community engagement opportunities for Hamlin Middle School.
We’re especially excited after the success of our first school-wide spirit event—a grade-level volleyball competition where students faced off against staff. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with both students and teachers saying they had a blast and want more activities like it.
Looking ahead to the third quarter, we have big plans! We’re organizing an assembly, launching a podcast where Student Voice members interview staff, and continuing our weekly broadcast of Loggers Live, our YouTube Live morning show hosted by Mr. Dixon and the Student Voice anchors. One of the highlights will be a special weekly segment featuring our principal, Mrs. Starck.
Stay tuned—there’s so much more to come!
Staff vs. Student Volleyball Game
To celebrate the end of the quarter, Hamlin staff and students participated in a fun, competitive game of volleyball!
