Message from the Principal
Dear Spartan Parents and Guardians,
As a building principal, my number one priority is school safety. For that reason, we conduct several different safety drills throughout the school year. This year we have practiced fire drills, tornado drills, an evacuation drill and three lockdown drills. Each time we conduct one of these drills, we make small adjustments in timing so that students are applying the concepts of the drill to a new situation. That was never more true this year than the lockdown drill we ran on Monday of this week.
Our first two lockdown drills this year were conducted during class time. During these drills, students were able to think about what they might do if a lockdown situation arose during different classes. This week, we conducted a lockdown drill during an unstructured time in the day - a passing time. To prepare students for this drill, we discussed what a student might do in this situation during a homeroom lesson. The main points for students were the following:
Get behind a locked door as quickly as possible
If you are in or near a bathroom, get in and close the door (doors are always locked)
If we call a lockdown and your nearest door is external, leave the building
Students and staff did an outstanding job of taking the necessary steps to protect themselves in a lockdown situation. I can say with confidence that our building is prepared for any emergency that we might need to respond to.
We also want parents to know what is happening at all times in our building. How we communicate during unplanned events is vitally important. If there are ever unplanned events that require us to use any of our school safety protocols, we want parents to understand the language that we are using so they know how to appropriately respond. Here are some keywords to look and listen for:
Drill – If we are using the word “drill” we are practicing our protocols so we are prepared for any unplanned event. Parents do not need to worry at all about what is happening in the building.
Shelter in Place – This means that there is an issue inside or outside the building that requires students to physically remain where they are. There could be several reasons for this but the most common is a medical issue that we are responding to. We keep students in classrooms to provide privacy for the person having the medical issue. Again, there is nothing for parents to be concerned about.
Perimeter – If the word perimeter is used, that means that there is a threat to the community directly around the school. That means that school will continue on as normal but no one will be allowed to enter or exit the building. That may disrupt students’ lunch or travel to a Center but it is necessary to maintain our safety. While this term implies that there is a dangerous situation outside, parents do not need to worry about the safety of their students inside.
Lockdown – If we use the term lockdown, there is a threat to safety within the building. We will take all necessary precautions to keep students as safe as possible. We ask that parents do not come to the building as that could prevent needed help from public safety organizations. We will communicate what we can, when we can.
With Spartan Pride,
Cody Japinga
Principal

Yearly Student Verification
Clarification on Yearly Student Verification for 2024-2025 School Year
We have had a few questions about the Yearly Student Verification for the 2024-2025 school year. There is a new section called “Virtual Course Enrollment Permission.” We are asking that parents agree to this because we are required to have this permission if your student ever chooses to take an online course at LHS. Without this agreement, the State will not give us our State aid funding for that course. As always, the choice to take an online course while enrolled at LHS is always your choice.

Fees & Fines
For your convenience, invoices were sent via email in regards to fees & fines.
You can pay for any fee or fine one of two ways:
Pay with cash or check in the main office at the high school. **** If you are paying by check, please pay any athletic fee separately. It can still be dropped off in the main office.
Pay with debit or credit card at schoolpay.com.
This is especially important for senior students as all fees & fines must be paid prior to Cap & Gown pick up.
