Our School's Mission
Our School's Why
Dear LWSH Families and Caregivers,
Greetings LWSH Families, Caregivers, and Scholars,
Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving holiday with family and other loved ones! In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I want to express how grateful I am for our scholars, families and staff here at LWSH 🧡
As you know, this year has been quickly rolling by, and we are nearing the half-way point of the school year. I wanted to take this time to share just a few announcements regarding OST Retakes, On-Track for Graduation, and our Monthly Parent Advisory Meetings that began in November.
Beginning the Week of December 5th, we will begin our OST Retakes for scholars in grades 10-12 who still need to pass or meet the competency score for ELA II and / or Algebra I. The passing of these tests is required for graduation according to the Ohio Department of Education. Therefore, it is critical that those who have not passed it yet be sure to take it. Another opportunity will be given in the Spring for those who do not pass the Winter tests.
Those who have never taken the Biology, American History, American Government, or Geometry OST are also required to attend OST retakes sessions. Beginning Monday, December 2nd, students required to take specific tests on specific days will be given a ticket as a reminder. All testing will take place at the Main Campus, so those who are currently in the 11th and 12th grade that attend MetroHealth and are assigned to testing, must report to the Main Campus on their testing day. Students will also receive a notification through their district Microsoft email of their testing day and times. Please see the calendar events in this month's newsletter for specific dates and times for OST Retakes.
The second item I would like to discuss is attendance and On-Track for Graduation. We utilize credit recovery for scholars who have NOT passed specific courses in the past. Those who are currently assigned credit recovery are considered "off-track for graduation". CMSD has changed the credit recovery system to Edmentum which requires students to be in the classroom during their credit recovery period to complete required assessments. All credit recovery courses in grades 10, 11, and 12 happen during first period. Therefore, if your child is currently taking courses through credit recovery, it is imperative that they arrive to school daily on time when school begins at 8:35am. We are carefully monitoring completion by students and have been mailing letters home to inform our families on how much credit recovery is being completed. Please be on the lookout for those communications and be sure your child is getting to school on time every day.
Ninth grade families also received letters of warning for being off-track for graduation based on the quarter 1 grades. We need our scholars and families to be aware that if 9th graders do not pass all of their classes for the first semester, which ends in January, they will be identified as off-track for graduation. Most of our 9th graders who are currently off-track are chronically late or absent for the first few periods of the day. Again, I cannot express the importance of getting to school daily and on time. In doing so, scholars have a much higher chance of being on-track for graduation and remaining on-track. If you or your child need support in getting to school on-time each day, please call the school and we will have our Family Support Specialist, Jamessa Motley, contact you to see how we can help.
Last, but certainly not least, we now have a new Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) here at LWSH. This group will meet monthly after school hours with our Parent Ambassador, Azella Porter. We encourage all families to become a part of this empowering organization that gives our families a voice to improve school academics, culture, and learning environment. Get involved and get engaged today! Be on the lookout for communications on dates and times for our PAC meetings.
We look forward to another great month of school with the scholars and your partnership to bring success! If you have any questions, feel free to call the school at 216-838-7100.
Sincerely,
Juliet King
Your Proud LWSH Principal
