Student Handbook Review
Parents and Guardians,
Please review the Northbrook Student Handbook located HERE on our website. Specially, please review:
1. Attendance Guidelines (page 4) - Northbrook Middle School will follow guidelines set forth by GCPS attendance protocol (gcpsk12.org/schools/attendance). Please submit attendance notes to the grade level office within 5 days of your return to school. State law states that students may be excused from school under these circumstances (written notes are required):
- Personal illness or attendance in school endangering the health of other students.
- A serious illness or death in a student's immediate family.
- A court order or order by a governmental agency, including pre-induction physical examinations for service in the armed forces.
- Observing religious holidays.
- Conditions rending attendance impossible or hazardous to student health or safety.
- A period not to exceed one day is allowed, at the discretion of the local unit of administration, for registering to vote or voting in a public election.
- Visiting with a parent or legal guardian prior to or during leave from deployment to a combat zone or combat support posting as a member of the armed forces of the United States or the National Guard (maximum of five school days per year).
- Students will be counted present when serving as pages of the Georgia General Assembly.
- Before School Procedures - Student arriving between 7:45 - 8:55 am must report directly to the cafeteria. Students who arrive before 8:55 am will have a quiet study hall in the cafeteria. Students are not to go to classrooms other than the cafeteria unless they have a written note from the teacher. Arrival in the morning before 8:55 am is a privilege. Northbrook retains the right to revoke this privilege for any students who are unable to follow school rules during quiet study hall in the mornings.
- After School Procedures - Car riders must be picked up no later than 4:30pm.
Student Dress Code (page 10) - The dress code is designed to reduce the likelihood of distraction or school disruption and to maintain an academic focus in the classroom and on campus.
- SHIRTS/TOPS
- Inappropriate shirts/tops should not be worn to school. This includes, but is not limited to halter tops, strapless tops, spaghetti straps, and tops that are low-cut, see-through, or backless.
- Shirts/tops that expose cleavage or undergarments are inappropriate for school.
- SHORTS/SKIRTS/PANTS/BOTTOMS
- Shorts, skirts, or pants that expose undergarments, buttocks, or upper thigh are inappropriate for school. There should be no rips or holes that reveal inappropriate areas of the body.
Headwear is prohibited and must be kept out of sight in the building. This includes, but is not limited to hoods, bandanas, wave caps, sweatbands, sunglasses, or any other head covering. Exceptions for religious or medical reasons may be granted by the principal.
Jewelry or accessories that may be used as weapons are not to be worn at school. This includes, but is not limited to wallet chains, spiked rings/bracelets, two/three finger rings that are joined, oversized belt buckles, bulky chains, sharp objects that could pose a danger.
Proper footwear must be worn at all times.
Clothing, masks, jewelry, body art, or tattoos that display words or symbols that promote or depict profanity, violence, drugs, alcohol, sex, illegal gang affiliation, or other illegal activity expressed or implied are not allowed.
Any student dress/appearance not specifically stated that the faculty or staff deems inappropriate and/or distracting is also prohibited.
- PROCEDURES FOR NOT FOLLOWING DRESS CODE:
- Dress code violations may result in a phone call to the parent/guardian. The parent/guardian may be required to bring appropriate clothing.
- Repeated dress code violations may result in disciplinary action.
5.Visitors (page 14) - Visitors will use the Visitor Management System to ring the main office to be let in the building. Any visitor who enters any school within the system must report to the front office to receive permission and register their visit in the official logbook. Parents and guardians are encouraged to have lunch with their child. We ask that no outside food from third party vendors, including fast food or pizza brought to school. We ask that no cupcakes or other birthday celebration food items be brought to the cafeteria as this causes distractions.
If you have any questions, please give us a call at our grade-level offices:

Application for 2024-2025 Superintendent's Student Advisory Council
APPLICATION FOR THE 2024-25 SUPERINTENDENT'S STUDENT ADVISORY COUNCIL
The Superintendent's Student Advisory Council is a crucial avenue for middle and high school students to directly influence districtwide decisions, processes, and culture. It's an opportunity to share feedback, school experiences, and innovative ideas to address challenges with Superintendent Dr. Calvin J. Watts on a variety of issues affecting students, schools, and communities.
The 2024-25 SSAC application will be available as a link through StudentSquare and in StudentVUE from August 7 to 28, 2024. Two students from each middle and high school will be selected based on their completed applications; alternate members from each school will also be identified. We will notify students selected to serve on the Superintendent's Student Advisory Council via student email on or before September 11 and notify all principals at that time of their representatives for the year. A flyer to share with students is available on the Communications Database. Learn more about SSAC on our website!
