TEACHER TALKS
Meet Ms. Mayo!
College: I received my undergraduate degree at La Salle University and I am currently getting my Masters at Eastern University!
Years Teaching: I have been teaching since 2020 as a substitute teacher. I first started out in the Colonial School District. I then started at the Upper Darby School District from 2021-2023. I began my first year officially teaching at UDSD December 2023!
About Me: I am a La Salle alumni and proud of it! My undergrad is in Business Marketing and I was an Assistant Manager at one of the Sherwin Williams paint stores right out of college. I was blessed to welcome my daughter in 2022 and love being a mother! One of my interests is learning to play the guitar which I will start lessons this summer. I want to challenge myself and come out of my box to do new and different things! When I was in middle school I used to play the french horn, so adding another instrument to my list is one of my goals.
Meet Ms. Juliano!
College: I attended college at James Madison University. After graduating, I did a year in AmeriCorps with City Year in New York City. It was there that I realized I wanted to be a teacher. I then attended George Washington University where I got my Masters in Special Education. After being in the classroom for 8 years, I realized I wanted to pursue becoming a Reading Specialist and went back to school again at Drexel where I received my Reading Specialist and Wilson Certifications.
Years Teaching: This is my 9th year teaching. I taught Special Education in East Harlem in New York City for 8 years. This is my first year teaching in Pennsylvania!
About Me: I lived in New York City for 10 years before deciding to move to Philly to be closer to my family. I grew up in Lancaster, PA. Outside of school I enjoy running (I ran the NYC Marathon in 2018!), reading, and spending time with my friends and family. During the summer I spend the majority of my time at Bethany Beach.
COUNSELOR'S CORNER
Guidance Counselor: Marissa Difilippo
Happy Mental Health Awareness Month, Stonehurst! For the school year’s last counseling lessons, students in all grades learned about what mental health is, and some mental health tips for kids!
In addition to learning about mental health, students in 5th grade are going to learn about stress and how to cope with stressors. For their last counseling lesson as Stonehurst students, we are going to have some fun playing coping skills bingo to go with our mental health theme for this month!
MENTAL HEALTH MONTHLY
Social Worker: Coleen Sanders
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, so this month I am sharing Mental Health Resources in Delaware County. Don’t be afraid to reach out if you, your child, or someone you know needs help. Learning all you can about mental health is an important first step. In addition to the resources below, please reach out to your health insurance, primary care doctor or state/county mental health authority for more resources.
NURSE'S NEWS
School Nurse: Colleen Stetler
Summer is coming and I hope you all enjoy it! I wanted to share some information regarding medical requirements for all school aged children in the state of Pennsylvania:
*Any child with medication at school: A parent or guardian must come to the school to pick up the medication before the last day (June 11). If medications are not picked up by a parent they will be disposed of. If you know your child will need medication kept at school during the 2024/2025 school year, please review the medication policy on the UDSD website and have paperwork completed over the summer by their prescribing physician.
*If your child received a vision or hearing referral from the nurse and you have not yet followed up, please be sure to do so over the summer.
*Students entering 3rd grade are required to have a dental exam before the end of the 2024/2025 school year. I encourage you to make this appointment over the summer and turn it into the nurse’s office at the beginning of the year.
*Students entering 6th grade are required to have a physical exam before the end of the 2024/2025 school year. Please note that an immunization record is not a physical. If you’ve already turned yours in, thank you! It will be sent to the middle school at the end of the year. If you have not, I encourage you to schedule this over the summer so your child’s health record is up to date at the beginning of next year.
If you have any questions regarding this information, please feel free to reach out to me!

See you next year!
SPECIAL'S SPOTLIGHT
News from the Library
Librarian: Margie Weil
All library books checked out must be returned to the library after Memorial Day weekend. If a book has been lost, it must be paid for. Any book previously paid for can get their money refunded if the book is found up until the end of this school year. Email notices of overdue books go out on a regular basis. Please check in with the librarian, Margie Weil, @mweil@upperdarbysd.org if you have any questions or concerns.
Keep Reading this Summer!
Look for more information coming home about Summer Reading Programs! Don’t let your kids experience the dreaded summer slide where they lose reading abilities. Help your child read on a regular basis all through the break.
Each child will get a chance to self select and take home a new print book FREE from the library at the end of the year. Free ebooks will also be available online through Stonehurst’s MackinVia program all summer 24/7.
Delaware County Public Libraries / Upper Darby Public Library are running active summer programming for children of all ages. They have both ebooks and physical books available to borrow as well. Barnes and Noble is offering a free book as a reading incentive if you turn in a completed reading journal. Specific information on how to access these and other resources will be coming home to you soon! Keep your child reading and growing all summer!
Reading Olympics
Our Reading Olympics team successfully competed in the county-wide competition held on May 2 at Strath Haven Middle School. There were 12 students from the 4th and 5th grades taking part: Bintou Konnah, our captain, led the team of Atika Rahaman, Vastie St. Surin, Asiyah Stanford, Samir Rityavong, Leona McMillan, Mariame Bagaga, Samantha Campoverde, Amirou Diallo, Aaron Riley, Angie Nunez Coto and Hassan Mangara! The 3 adults supporting the competition were Margie Weil (Team Leader/Librarian), Dr. Hannah Ebin Hamermesh, and Rachel Martinez. The Stonehurst Reading Royals made our school proud, came home with medals, and had a wonderful time at the competition doing it!

Anthony moved here from Venezuela with his family in the Fall of 2022. They moved here for his dad's job. His dad is a barber.
1. What was the weather like in Venezuela?
The weather was very hot most of the time. We didn't have the seasons but sometimes it would get windy. It never snowed but it would rain sometimes. I saw snow for the first time in the United States.
2. Did you go to school in Venezuela? What was it like?
Yes, I went to school. A lot of our classes were outside. We didn't have as much technology.
3. What was your favorite food to eat in Venezuela?
My favorite food to eat was arepa maracucha which is a deep fried arepa stuffed with pork, avocado, garlic, and cheese.
4. What did you do for fun in Venezuela?
We would play outside when it rained because it was cooler. We played soccer.
