HAUTAPU SCHOOL PANUI
13 September 2024
Week 8, Term 3
Acting Assistant Principal's Message
Kia ora whānau and caregivers,
What a busy few weeks we’ve had since the last panui! We’ve had many school-wide events that brought all our students together, fostering many tuakana teina relationships between our older and younger students.
This week, a group of students attended the annual AIMS Games tournament in Tauranga. The Zespri AIMS Games is Australasia’s largest junior sporting event. Tracey Bennett and Stephanie Barr had the opportunity to see our students in action at the AIMS Games and were very impressed and proud of their efforts and sportsmanship.
Thank you to the parents of these students for giving them the opportunity to attend the AIMS Games. It will be a memorable experience for your children. A special mention of thanks goes to Stephanie for organizing and coordinating this event and making it happen for our students. From planning and fundraising to filling in (loads of!) paperwork, Stephanie worked tirelessly to ensure our students attended the AIMS Games this year.
We held our whole-school cross-country day last Thursday, and we enjoyed beautiful spring weather, which our students loved running in. Our students displayed our school values of Community by encouraging their peers, and a special mention goes to our PALS leaders who supported and encouraged our junior tamariki. The value of Challenge was also shown by our students, especially after running many laps of the cross-country track!
Many thanks once again to Stephanie for all her hard work in organizing such a wonderful day for our students. All the best to those senior students attending the Waikato Full Primary Interschools Cross Country competition happening next Friday.
We’ve also held both our whole-school speeches, where students presented their speeches to their classes, with some presenting to the whole school. It is wonderful to see all our students, from new entrants through to our Year 7/8 students, writing, practising, and presenting either a poem, description, information report, or topic of their choice to an audience. Tino pai to all our students for displaying our school values of Explore and Courage.
Congratulations to Alexa, who came first place in the Waikato Full Primary School Association regional speech competition. Alexa will be presenting her speech at the Waikato Speech Competition next week, good luck, Alexa. Also, tino pai to Ben, who came third place in the Cambridge Rotary speech competition. Great job, Ben!
We held our Daffodil Day the week before last and raised $162 to support the Cancer Society. Thank you for your kind donations. Our students looked fabulous in yellow, and it was a great way to kick off spring. Thank you to Brooke Phelan and the Student Council for organizing this fabulous event.
Congratulations to Corey and Mason, who recently won second prize for the Physical World in the Year 7 category at the Waikato Science Fair. This is a huge accomplishment for Corey and Mason; your research and presentation skills really stood out at the Science Fair. Well done Corey and Mason.
What an awesome few weeks of success and achievements for our students across our kura!
This week and next week, we are very fortunate to have Abby and Harold visiting us from the Life Education Trust. The Life Education Trust provides education to support the health and wellbeing of tamariki and rangatahi, delivered through interactive learning experiences.
Students from Years 0-6 will visit Abby and Harold in the interactive classroom for two sessions, with our Year 7/8 students visiting for three sessions. Topics that will be taught are outlined in this panui.
Have a great weekend!
Ngā mihi nui,
Belinda HoebergenActing Assistant Principal

Aims Games
Aims 2024 – Swimming
Last week we went to Tauranga to compete in the 2024 Aims Swimming Competition. We had to have qualifying entry times to even get to the competition, which were pretty tough. But we both love swimming, and competing at Race meets, so it was fun just getting to the competition.
We arrived at the pool on Sunday morning for the opening day of the competition and there were people everywhere! There were 498 athletes from 157 schools. and a total of 3697 races – from all over New Zealand.
We didn’t expect there to be so many swimmers and supporters. There weren’t enough seats for the swimmers, so many parents and supporters had to stand, or left and came back just to watch certain races. Many swimmers didn’t get a seat at all! Dad spent most of his time away from the pool just waiting to come back inside for our races.
When the pool opened for warm up, it felt like all 500 kids all tried to warm up at once! After getting kicked and pushed around, we decided not to worry, and just did ‘dry land’ warm up instead.
But, even though that part of it wasn’t very good, the races themselves were great!
There were some amazing swimmers there, a few who were setting NZ age group records with their times! We didn’t come away with any medals this time, but we both got a few PBs (personal bests) each, and really enjoyed the racing. Bring on next year!

Extension 4 Food drive
The food drive was organised and co-ordinated by senior high school students. Their food drive is to address immediate hunger by providing essential food supplies and was coordinated with Goodwood Primary, Cambridge East, St Peters Catholic, Cambridge Primary, Leamington Primary, Hautapu and Cambridge High School. Students have had the opportunity to reconnect with their primary school and share their vision with senior leaders, staff and students.
Thank you to all our families who donated to this food drive. The Salvation Army in Cambridge was extremely thankful for this contribution.
Thank you to Dayna Anderson and Jack Charlton (both former Hautapu Students) for helping to make this all happen.
