Alhambra Unified School District News for Parents
Message from the Superintendent
Dear AUSD Families,
Summer is going by quickly. It feels like we just finished with all our promotions and graduations, and yet July is only a week away.
As we approach the upcoming celebration of Independence Day, it seems like the ideal time to reflect on unity, respect, and gratitude as we come together to honor the ideals that shaped our nation. We will soon enjoy the fireworks and festivities that are part of the Fourth of July, but let us also remember the principles on which our nation was founded. The ideals of liberty, equity, and justice resonate in our district and throughout the country. There is still much work to be done for us to reach those lofty goals, but I am proud to be a part of a community that embraces those ideals and continually works towards achieving them and empowering students to be a generation that creates a more just and inclusive society.
I hope you are enjoying the summer break so far, and are slowing down and spending time with family and friends. Our dedicated staff members are finding time for some well-deserved breaks, but are also continuing to work hard through the summer months to prepare to provide the best possible education to our students. Our team will be more than ready to welcome your children back to our schools in August.
Our next issue of AUSD Connection will not be sent out until July 28th. That issue will contain important updates and back-to-school information. In the meantime, I encourage you to stay connected with us through our district/site websites and our social media platforms for the latest news and resources.
On behalf of AUSD, I would like to wish you a safe and memorable Fourth of July. May the rest of summer be filled with joy, relaxation, and cherished moments with friends and family members.
In Partnership,
Denise R. Jaramillo, Ed.D.
Superintendent

FEATURED EVENT
New Teacher Induction Colloquium
Congratulations to our AUSD Year 1 and Year 2 Induction Teachers, who completed their two-year Induction program in May. The purpose of Induction is to provide new teachers in their first and second years of teaching with mentorship so that they are more effective in their classrooms and receive support in the most challenging years. With 26 Year One teachers, and 40 Year Two teachers, this was Alhambra Unified School District's largest-ever group of Induction teachers. Thank you to the mentors, administrators, and colleagues who have guided and supported these teachers during these important early years of their educational careers. Special shout-out to the hard-working and dedicated Induction Leadership Team: Van Duong. Chia Han, Deborah Garcia Negrete, Monica Hinojos, Ann Wilson, and Monica Yew.
Staff Report Presentation Slides
Student Board of Education Member
We are excited to introduce you to AUSD's first-ever STUDENT Board of Education Member.
Congratulations to Justin Wang, who will serve on the Board for the 2023-24 school year! His first official meeting will be on Tuesday, August 8th, but he was publicly introduced to the community at Tuesday's Board meeting. Justin will also serve as the District's Student Advisory Council Chairperson.
Congratulations also to Kaitlyn Cao, who was elected as the alternate student Board member! Kaitlyn was also introduced to the community on Tuesday. She will fill in for Justin if he cannot attend a meeting to ensure we always have student voices represented at each meeting. Kaitlyn will serve as the Vice Chairperson of our Student Advisory Council.
Both Justin and Kaitlyn will attend the California School Board Association conference with our other Board Members in the fall, and will be instrumental as we continue to develop this important role in our District. We are excited to have both of them join us!
Alternative Income Form
Help us ensure that Alhambra Unified School District receives the maximum amount of federal funds for our schools. The collection of household income is a necessary step to receive millions of dollars in federal funds for the school that your child attends. REMINDER: Effective May 15, 2023, all parents will be required to respond to the Alternate Income Form (AIF) survey in order to gain access to other pages of Parent Portal. (Please Note: If you completed the AIF survey prior to May 15, 2023, we need you to respond again in order to accurately gather data for the 2023-24 school year.) Click Here for AUSD AIF Directions.
Medi-Cal Redetermination
During the pandemic, the federal government waived the annual requirement for states to annually verify eligibility for Medi-Cal, a process known as redetermination. Because of that flexibility, millions of Medi-Cal members maintained their coverage. With the pandemic entering a new phase, the state of California has made this requirement mandatory again on April 1, 2023. Health Net and L.A. Care Health Plan strongly urge all Medi-Cal members to take steps to help families keep their Medi-Cal coverage by updating all contact information, report changes in household and answer all requests for information from the county office. Members can visit BenefitsCal.com to learn more, update their information, or enroll in Medi-Cal.
hazel health telehealth mental health services
We continue to partner with Hazel Health to provide telehealth mental health services for AUSD students. Telehealth mental health services are available at home for any Alhambra Unified School District student. They are also currently available on some campuses for students who are attending AUSD summer programs. Parents can reach out directly to Hazel to sign the e-consent and to arrange for services for your child. Get more information and/or sign up at: my.hazel.co/alhambrausd. This service is offered at NO COST to you. (Hazel will still need to collect your insurance information and/or verify your uninsured status, but you will not be billed.)
Registration for the 2023-24 school year
Registration for the 2023-24 school year is OPEN. If your child will be a new student at an AUSD school, it's best to register as early as possible. Permit applications are also open now. (Please share this information with friends and neighbors who have school-aged children and are not yet enrolled in AUSD.)
The Parent Portal is also ready for returning students to update their enrollment. (Reminder: Parents of returning students need to update their enrollment information in the Parent Portal ANNUALLY! Make sure you complete it before the new school year begins.)

LITTLE BITS OF GOOD NEWS & INFORMATION FROM AROUND THE DISTRICT
San Gabriel High School principal Debbie Stone and teacher Amanda Gordon Blackwood were the special guests of the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) for their next podcast episode. Thank you to Elizabeth Graswich, LACOE Executive Director of Public Affairs & Communications, for having them on the LACOE Podcast, Let Me Add to That... The podcast will be available HERE on July 5th.
Congratulations to Mark Keppel High School AP French Student, Hunter Nguyen Luong. Hunter competed against AP French students in Southern California. She won for her essay/critique competition of the film “Jumeau Mais Pas Trop” from The American French Film Festival High School Screenings at the AP French Level. After school closed for the year, AUSD's management team spent a poignant and reflective day at the Japanese American National Museum (JANM) for professional development. with a focus on equity and justice.
An especially powerful portion of the day was spent learning about former Mark Keppel High School student Stanley Hayami, who was interned in Heart Mountain concentration camp and tragically killed in combat as a member of the famed 442nd Regiment. Stanley's legacy lives on through his detailed diary, sketches, and letters donated to JANM by his family, and in the video featured below.
Earlier this year, AUSD partnered with EduPeoples, Inc. to provide a successful student exchange opportunity for AHS students. An educational delegation recently visited Mark Keppel High School in hopes of expanding the program and partnering with MKHS in the near future.
AUSD staff voluntarily participated in a four-day Summer Equity Institute 2023 from June 12th -15th. The sessions consisted of powerful learning, exploration, personal reflections and lively discussions held by consultants from Powerful Choices.
The District's TK-6 Summer Adventures Program is in full swing at our elementary sites (except the ones under construction). Yesterday, Superintendent Jaramillo and Board Members Kaysa Moreno and Fred Chang visited several Adventures programs, including the one at Repetto School (housing students from Repetto and Ynez). Thank you to Ynez assistant principal Tammy Lopez who snapped this adorable photo. Summer Adventures will continue through July 14th.
This past Wednesday, the AUSD CTE Early College Program held an Information Session Workshop for AUSD high school families. The workshop was for all Alhambra Unified School high school students providing them the information on how to earn FREE college credits. The information session was led by Coordinator of College and Career Preparation Dr. Leann Huang, and Career Technical Education advisors Jennifer Ha & Janice Liu.

A Life in Pieces: The Diary and Letters of Stanley Hayami
Stanley Hiyami was a 16-year-old teenager at Mark Keppel High School in 1942 when Executive Order 9066 forced his family to the Heart Mountain concentration camp in Wyoming. Stanley eventually enlisted in the U.S. Army's legendary 442nd Regimental Combat Team (the segregated Japanese-American unit that would become the most decorated unit in U.S. history) and was tragically killed at the age of 19 while trying to rescue a fellow soldier during combat.
Stanley enjoyed writing and sketching and kept a detailed diary throughout that time. “A Life in Pieces: The Diary and Letters of Stanley Hayami” brings to life Stanley's diary, artwork, and letters. (Please take time to watch it in its entirety.)
If you cannot visit the Japanese American National Museum in person, you can review many pieces of the exhibit online at: https://www.janm.org/exhibits/a-life-in-pieces/video.
