Assistant Superintendent Julie Lower reported on district reading program enhancements.
In mid-May, district administrators were approached by a group of highly effective elementary educators and the instructional coach. They advocated for changes to our curriculum resources. The abundance of available reading resources caused confusion among teachers regarding daily and component-specific program usage, resulting in disjointed reading lessons. Teachers expressed a desire for a more integrated and seamless reading program.
To address these challenges, a dedicated Elementary Reading Literacy Team was formed, comprising the Asst. Superintendent, all elementary principals, two teachers per building, all four Title 1 teachers, the instructional coach, and two part-time reading coaches.
Looking ahead, our team’s efforts during the 2024-25 school year will focus on supporting the implementation of 95 Core Phonics, while also researching alternative math curriculum resources to replace Everyday Math for the 2025-26 school year.
The 2024-2025 enhancements to the Mexico Public Schools Elementary Reading Program reflect a dedicated effort to streamline and continuously improve literacy instruction. By adopting the 95 Percent Group's "95 Core Phonics" resource, supported by strong evidence of effectiveness, and addressing previous program shortcomings, we aim to provide a more cohesive and effective reading curriculum. Comprehensive training and strategic adjustments to instructional resources will ensure that our teachers are well-prepared and our students receive the best possible education. As we move forward, we remain committed to evaluating and refining our approaches to meet the evolving needs of our students and educators.
