Good Afternoon, Woodbury Middle School,
We hope you enjoyed the warm weekend. This week’s weather is trending cooler. With the warm weather, this is our first attempt to ask that we closely monitor appropriate dress for school. This is always a touchy subject. Our handbook states the following:
Dress Code:
Student dress may be regulated, and students are encouraged to dress in clothing appropriate to the school situation. Restrictions on freedom of expression may be applied whenever the mode of dress is unsafe, disruptive, or contrary to law.
Any school dress that impairs safety or increases the risk of injury to self or others, causes discomfort to others (e.g., uncleanliness, malodorousness, inappropriate language), causes distraction or disruption of the learning environment, advertises or advocates the use of alcohol or drugs, pornography, or is libelous or inherently contains the unreasonable potential to upset and hurt others is prohibited. Sneakers or rubber-soled shoes are required for out door play and for participation in PE classes. Students may bring in a pair of sneakers on their assigned PE day. When questions arise regarding the appropriateness of attire, they are to be brought to the attention of the designated administrator. The administrator will use his or her professional discretion in addressing such concerns.
What does this all mean? In short, we feel clothing should be appropriate for the school setting. Often, we see students wearing clothing that is more suitable for the gym or beach than school. No one enjoys the uncomfortable conversation of “being dress-coded.” We ask that you discuss this with your students so they understand. Shirts or shorts that are too short or expose undergarments should not be worn to school. We ask for your cooperation before anyone purchases clothes for the remainder of the school year that may not be appropriate.
Our 7th-grade students visited Flanders Nature Center today. Students will transfer and apply their new learning with our current unit, Matter Cycling and Photosynthesis, and get a hands-on experience with maple syrup (YUM!). At the Flanders Sugar House, students will see a demonstration of the evaporator to see how sap becomes maple syrup. Thanks to Mrs. McCarthy and Mrs. Lyman for organizing this trip.
In the coming weeks, Woodbury Middle School will conduct a school-wide practice evacuation to prepare for an event that requires us to leave the school campus. We are collaborating with the Woodbury Emergency Management, Police, and Fire departments. We will report to the school community when the drill is complete.
March Madness is scheduled for March 28th and begins at 5:00. Students will participate in fun activities. Thanks to the WMS Parents in the Middle, food will be served. There is a $5 entry fee, and tickets can be purchased this week on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. No tickets will be sold at the door.
