AIKYAM – THE WORLD IS ONE
On December 24, 2022, the students of Bodhi International School collaborated and presented a musical play ‘Aikyam – The World Is One’ on its Annual Day to raise awareness about some social evils and the need to rise above all differences and respect beautiful diversity all around.
They came up with a unique awareness of Sameness with the knowledge of reality; the true knowledge of existence, gaining which knowledge the person ceases to see a difference in this vast world of "variety". The idea was wonderfully conceptualized with a dash of spiritual elements of Indian mythology.
The department of English prepared three English skits, a talk show, and a monologue to put forth this idea emphatically.
The HoD of English, Ms. Noopur Chaturvedi scripted and dramatized the scenes of the skits. She was assisted by Ms. Bhavika Mutha.
DISCRIMINATION – A SOCIAL EVIL
Discrimination is a kind of social evil which is prevailing in every society on this planet. There is always some kind of discrimination present, which may be racial discrimination or caste discrimination or it can be social discrimination. Its impact can be seen through continuing racial inequalities in the education sector too, especially with the increase in bullying in schools and colleges.
To raise awareness about bullying and spread the message of love and harmony, the students of Grades 6 and 7 beautifully presented a short skit in English ‘Raisins in the Sun’, highlighting the pain of the sufferer. Similarly, the students of Grades 6 and 8 presented an act ‘Without the Rule of Law’ to show casteism as a very regressive concept that determines a person's worth based on their caste, giving no attention to their talent and qualifications. How it leads to violence and hatred amongst communities was also focused upon.
GENDER INEQUALITY
Gender inequality is a grave social phenomenon in which men and women are not treated equally. The treatment may arise from distinctions regarding biology, psychology, or cultural norms prevalent in society. Some of these distinctions are empirically grounded, while others appear to be social constructs.
Our students of Grade 9 performed a one-act play ‘The Other Side’ in an effort to move towards eradicating the differences based on gender and people’s physical attributes.
GOODNESS TALK SHOW
The search for friendship, love, respect, tolerance, empathy and compassion - all starts from within. Our world is in need of these human qualities. The first step is to make sure that our hearts are clear of any hatred and prejudice for others who are different from us. The world around us changes when we change our perspective.
The unity of mankind can only be preserved, and peace can only be maintained through the recognition of the diversity of the human race and the interdependence of humanity and nature. This thought was put forward through a ‘Talk Show’ by the students of Grades 11 and 12. In this talk show, the students personified as Sudha Murthy, Angelina Jolie and Nadia Murad, the ambassadors of unity and stressed upon the importance of goodness in restoring world peace.
ONENESS - A MONOLOGUE
Solutions for all our problems can be found within.
A strong message of Aikyam was given through the bilingual poetic monologue of oneness. The central idea conveyed was that we count on our problems so big that we forget to trace the reasons for the same. We tend to invest so much in finding solutions but forget to maintain the balance, the balance, and harmony with nature, the balance and harmony with our fellow human beings, etc.
Advita Saraswat from Grade 6 presented the English part of the monologue and Preksha Jain from Grade 9 presented the Hindi side of the monologue at our Annual Day Concert. The play Aikyam came to an end with the monologue being presented on stage.
The monologue was written by one of the teachers of the English Department,
Mrs. Sreela Sujikumar.
FLIPPED CLASSROOM
Enhancing the knowledge of students is the utmost priority of the Bodhi International School.
To strengthen the learning process, where students get an opportunity to gain knowledge, develop critical thinking, and improve their presentation skills, an activity called 'Show What You Know' was conducted in Grade 8. The students presented their understanding of rhetorical techniques with the help of PowerPoint slides. Going one step forward, many learners researched and included a questionnaire round to assess the understanding of their peers.
ENGLISH ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
The English department began its Language Enrichment Program in November with an aim to enhance the learning skills of an individual and build a strong foundation for a language. It includes a bundle of opportunities for the students as a natural extension to their scholastic pursuits. The activities in the program promote critical thinking, problem-solving, and concentration skills and also make learning fun and meaningful.
The objective of the program is to enable learners to:
• build greater confidence and proficiency in oral and written communication
• develop the ability and knowledge required to engage in independent reflection and inquiry
• make appropriate usage of the English language
• develop curiosity and creativity through extensive reading
Under this Program, students were engaged in the following interactive English Activities:
Roleplay
Jam – Just a Minute
Public Speaking
Story Telling
Show and Tell
Listening & Writing
Expressing & Noting
STORY WRITING
A GRAND THING
You may like pondering about horror incidents. Sometimes you may watch horror movies with a spark in your eyes. You might also have been making up stories about ghosts. This incident is about someone like you who was into all these thoughts.
It was queer, sultry June. The time was around 11:58 pm. An attractive young lady in her teens had been out to a non-electrified old villa with 2 of her close friends. “As the clock strikes midnight, if you stand on the red doormat or I must say the bloody doormat, reading on, something is going to happen, a grand thing.” “Awwwwww” the dogs howled. “Ahhhhhh!” yelled Mia. Samaira with a wide grin interrupted, “Oh! you read it, Mia, at least have some patience. I would have narrated it to you. I have not even completed it yet.” “My goodness, Samaira, not all of that stuff right now. Do you even realize my socks turned wet and I was on the verge of fainting?” “Fine... I am sorry” said Samaira with a low moan. Johnson added, “But what about those creepy noises just before Mia screamed.” “Johnson's baby, if you are damn scared then just use your branded diapers, the sounds are just a coincidence. Don’t worry,” said Samaira sarcastically. The topic was closed in a few minutes and they explored and enjoyed the royalty of the villa. “Oh!What a horrific painting! A teen girl with a veil on her head and candies in her hand crying out for her mom. And look over here a painting of a girl under a black umbrella. And have a look at this one, a woman has a luxurious locket on her neck which when opened has a photo of a skeleton on one side and a picture of a cute girl on the other side. But why is there a black hoodie on her face? And finally, have a look at this interesting one - A bat with the same locket hanging in the villa. Mia, Johnson's baby, came over here to see what I explored.” screeched Samaira. Mia and Johnson were lighting the candles which were blown out. They came running towards Samaira, “What’s the matter, Samaira? We heard you call us.” “Here, see how realistic these paintings are. I don’t know but I feel I can connect with these paintings,” told Samaira with curiosity. “Which paintings are you talking about? You are standing in front of a plain brick wall.” queried Johnson “What!” asked Samaira suspiciously. Then came a sound of thunder and it seemed like a tree drastically fell. The brick wall in front of which Samaira was standing started cracking. Fortunately, Mia noticed it and pulled back Johnson and Samaira. “Oh thank you Mia!” said Johnson with a sigh of relief.
Samaira, still in shock, was thinking about the painting she had been eyeing. Not even a second had passed that one more tree was flashed by the thunder and at that very moment Samaira fainted. Johnson and Mia took Samaira to the car. “I don’t have a good vibe for this place. All is going wrong,” said Mia with an irregular heartbeat. “I know, first the creepy lines you saw as we entered, then the thundering, then the cracking of the wall, and now Samaira has fainted. Let’s just rush otherwise if we are late, Samaria’s stories will come true and our car will stop working,” told Johnson while giggling. They rushed towards the city, dropped Samaira at her home, and then went for a drive before returning to their families. “The girls with candies, the black umbrella, the locket, the black hoodie, the eerie bat.” blabbered Samaira. “What happened to Samaira? What have you been murmuring since morning?” questioned Samaria’s mom doubtfully. “Nothing much mom. It was a cold-blooded dream,” said Samaira in a confused state.
Her mom mentioned, “By the way, yesterday Mia and Johnson dropped you here last night.” “Oh! I don’t remember. I will just freshen up and catch you again mom.” Everything was going well until Samaira’s birthday arrived. Early morning, Samaira entered the bathroom, while taking a bath in the Jacuzzi for a second she could see the candies in the foam she had seen in the painting and from that moment she could think of nothing other than those paintings she had seen in the villa.
As she reached her school, she entered 12A and found Mia and Johnson standing with some bouquets. Samaira was amazed. “Aww thank you so much both of you. You always surprise me!” exclaimed Samaira. “Here’s a gift for you,” said Johnson. As soon as Samaira opened the box she found the locket she had seen in the painting. “Johnson’s baby if you have your diapers on can I ask you one thing?” cackled Samaira. “Hugh, yeah sure dude,” replied Johnson. “From where did you find this locket?” “Oh! I got it from the villa we had been to. It had a skeleton on it and as you like such stuff I bought it for you. Did you like it?” “Yup, it's something out of the box,” said Samaira. She wore the locket. As she was on her way home, a woman with a black umbrella and a black hoodie with an eerie bat on her left shoulder tried snatching the locket but failed. Samaira could connect with the woman and recalled that the woman was the same as she had seen in the painting. She immediately called Mia and Johnson to accompany them to the deep-rooted villa. The trio was standing outside the villa when they saw a woman in tears laying down on her foot. They got to know that she was Lia’s mother. Lia was one of their close friends who had been kidnapped three years ago. “What happened aunty, what’s the matter?” asked Mia. “O dear child, I saw your friend, Lia last night roaming over here.” “What! Then you should inform the police.” uttered Johnson “No one is ready to trust me, my child, not even a single person.” Cried Lia’s mom. The trio entered the villa. “You can’t trick me again and again Samaira. I know you are the one who has added the phrase to your previous lines.” said Mia “Help me friends! Please help me!” read Johnson. “Excuse me! It was not me this time. Listen! Let's go to Lia’s mom once.
Aunty can you just show me the pictures of Lia when she was a child.” added Samaira with utmost courage. As they saw the pictures, Samaira stated “Friends! the paintings, and the locket, have to do something with Lia. The childhood picture of Lia is what I saw in the locket.” The three of them entered the villa again. As the secret was revealed, this time when they entered they heard the shrieks and cries of Lia in every corner and then they saw the black hooded woman. “See I told you! I had seen that damn woman in the painting here and I am damn sure that the painting I saw that day was a sign that Lia was trying to show me but you both didn’t trust me.” All the candles blew off and the dogs howled. A plethora of bats sat on the ceiling of the villa. Then entered the woman in black. “Hahahahaha, more teens. Come, come to me. Serve the dark lord like your friend Lia did. Become a servant like me.” The demonic power yelled. “Ohh Lia so it was you all this time? questioned Samaira. “I am not Lia! Her soul is in the dark lord's control.” claimed evil. “Johnson's baby, give your diaper to this dark lord because now I know what I need to do.
According to one of my stories, a person can be unperturbed by speaking something very close to the person.” Samaira stated. Samaira, Mia, and Johnson spoke together their theme song. “WE 4 BEST FRIENDS, CLOSE FRIENDS, CUTE FRIENDS RULE THE WORLD WITH HORRIFIC, FUNNY, LOVELY, BLISSFUL WEAPONS.” “See there is something more written on the paper.” whispered Johnson “Help me! Ruin the horrifying skull.” read the paper. Mia crushed a skull kept over there. “Guys, I know what to do.” Said Samaira and pulled out the locket and ruined the skeleton from the locket. Finally, Lia was unpossessed. “Are you alright Lia?” asked the trio “I am so sorry but I don’t remember anything. I do recollect that WE 4 BEST FRIENDS, CLOSE FRIENDS, CUTE FRIENDS RULE THE WORLD WITH HORRIFIC, FUNNY, LOVELY, BLISSFUL WEAPONS.” “Today I proved that pondering about horror stories is a blessing sometimes,” murmured Samaira
But you may be wondering why I didn’t tell you the name of the villa. The dark lord still hunts for souls. I don’t know if you know how to make stories like me or not. I don’t know if you would be able to bear all this without Johnson's baby.

LAST KILL
For some considerable time, David had known he would kill his wife.
David was a creature of habit, and yet he had learned to accept his anonymity and predictability as a blessing, not a curse. He rose at the same time, dressed in clothes indistinguishable from those he wore on any other day, ate the same breakfast, took the same route to work. He filed insurance claims until lunchtime, and then he walked to the park. Here he sat for forty – eight minutes to read the newspaper, to eat his sandwich, and then he walked back to the office. To him, this routine had become a comfort. David had made no definite plans as to the means of disposal for her body, nor how he would explain her sudden disappearance to family, friends and neighbors. Perhaps he believed that once the deed was done he would be struck by a brilliant solution, a streak of lightning, a bolt from the blue.
David had decided the manner of her death, however. He would stab her in the eye. The chosen instrument of death was not a knife, but a knitting needle. He had bound half its length in duct tape so as to provide a firm grip, yet with six inches exposed he believed that the needle – if driven suddenly, and with sufficient force – would pass directly through her eye and into the brain. There would be little, if any, blood, and death would be instant. She had given him fifteen years of comfortable, predictable marriage, and he did not wish to cause her any undue pain or distress. In fact, David did not think of it so much as a murder, but more of an execution for some unknown crime, and so it was, on a cool summer evening, that David and his wife sat at the kitchen table to eat. She had prepared a chicken salad and opened a bottle of sauvignon Blanc. They ate in near – silence, the stillness punctuated by the odd pleasantry, the fact that rain had been expected but not arrived.
“Perhaps tomorrow”, David had commented, finding it ironic that he was mentioning something of which she would know nothing. David sat calmly, the knitting needle beneath his thigh. He felt a sense of philosophical resignation regarding the inevitability of what was about to happen? There would be no struggle, no raised voices, no desperate drama as she fought against hands tightening around her throat. There would be no blood spatter, no scuff – marks from frantic heels against the linoleum. She would find herself at dinner, and then she would be dead. Perhaps she would not even notice.
“You’re having no wine?” he asked her.
“No,” she said. “ I have a slight headache. The wine will worsen it.”
It was then that David experienced a sudden pang of something. She had smiled at him, and smiled in such an innocent and unaffected way, and there had almost been a sense of sadness in her tone. She could not know what he had planned, for he had planned nothing beyond her death. She could not suspect him of any deceit. Each day had been the same. He had done the same things, expressed the same thoughts with the same words, continued with routines that had remained constant and unchanging for years. In fact, it was safe to say that the single most defining characteristic o f their marriage was that nothing ever happened. But now he was feeling something.
Was it regret? Guilt? Was he even now questioning the determination he had made to kill her? Why was he experiencing this sense of disorientation, a feeling of agitation in his stomach, a feeling wave of nausea? Why did he now feel so weak, so uncertain?
He opened his mouth to speak. His words were thoughts, but they were not sounds. She looked at him, the same sense of sadness in her eyes. The stab of pain in his gut was breathtaking. It snatched every molecule of air from his lungs and throat. He had never felt anything like it. The pain did not last so long – thirty seconds, perhaps forty.
He felt his cheek against the plate of moist salad, and then he felt nothing at all. David’s wife carried the wine bottle and the glass to the sink. She was methodical as she washed them, ensuring every grain of sediment was removed from both, and then she stood in the kitchen doorway, and she looked at her dead husband, and she believed that during the last days – as she had planned his murder – she had felt more than enough emotion to compensate for a decade and a half of feeling nothing at all.

SCIENCE
Biology Practicals
Learning by doing can be achieved only by doing experimentation. Validity of the concepts learned by the students can be tested by experimentation. This satisfies basic human desire of knowledge of what, how and why of things. The student gets an opportunity to activity participate in the learning process. Practical work helps in acquiring of scientific knowledge and scientific outlook, the twin main objectives of teaching science. By doing experiments students learn how to handle and operate apparatus etc. Through practical work the students learn many good habits like resourcefulness, initiative, co-cooperation etc.
Grade 9 Students performed a lab practical where they did qualitative food tests. A qualitative food test indicates if a substance is present or absent in a sample. They used qualitative reagents to test for a range of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins. It includes Benedict’s test for sugars, Iodine test for starch, the emulsion test for lipids and the Biuret reagent for protein.
Objective of the Activity
The students were able to explain, on the molecular level, how the polar characteristic of water and sugar interact so that water dissolves sugar. Students will be able to identify and control the variables in their experiment. Students will also be able to explain why a nonpolar liquid, such as mineral oil, is not good at dissolving sugar.
Key Concepts of the Activity
For a liquid to dissolve a solid, the molecules of the liquid and solid must attract one another.
The bond between the oxygen and hydrogen atoms (O–H bond) in sugar (sucrose) gives the oxygen a slight negative charge and the hydrogen a slight positive charge. Sucrose is a polar molecule.
The polar water molecules attract the negative and positive areas on the polar sucrose molecules which makes sucrose dissolve in water.
A nonpolar substance like mineral oil does not dissolve a polar substance like sucrose.
HINDI
FRENCH
The Cambridge frame work follows whole and sole approach to enhance learners knowledge. Following the same paedagogical strategy Grade 11 gave their Speaking tests and prepared a research based presentation on various topics including family, Civil Solidarity Pact marriages in France.
FINANCIAL LITERACY
Stock Market Opportunity and Risk
This week students of Financial Literary program arrange a debate on Opportunity and Risk Concept in Stock market trading. During the session students debated over market fluctuations and how these fluctuations creates opportunities for investments for FIIs and investors where as other groups debated that opportunities in stock market governed by risk factors and these are not actually opportunities but as risk taking ability of Investor to take advantages of fluctuations and convert these risks into opportunities...
It was a mind-blowing session, where in students expressed there learning, understanding with sheer excitement. Each and every member positively contributed through out the session.
MATHEMATICS
GEOMETRY MONTH
Why is geometry important in everyday life?
Geometry is one of the classical disciplines of math. In Greek, it is roughly translated as “Earth Measurement” and is concerned with the properties of figures and space. It is firstly progressed to be a practical guide for volumes, measuring lengths and areas, and is in use till date. Geometry is important because the world is made up of different shapes and spaces. It finds huge applications in the real world out of which some are described below.
What is Geometry?
Geometry helps us in deciding what materials to use, what design to make and also plays a vital role in the construction process itself. Different houses and buildings are built in different geometric shapes to give a new look as well as to provide proper ventilation inside the house. Geometrical tools like the protractor, ruler, measuring tape, and much more are used in construction work, astronomy, for measurements, drawing etc. Different art forms are made by joining different geometric shapes together. Engineers, architects and builders use geometry to calculate area and volume before they start making plans for different structures.
Geometry in Space Study and Astronomy
In astronomy, geometric shapes help to understand the location of different planets, solar systems, and different stars. Our planets are spherical in shape. The Orbits are oval in shape. Many geometrical principles and equipment are used in astronomy. Many important calculations and findings made in astronomy are possible with the help of geometry. Geometry is developed to be a practical guide for measuring the velocity, area, volume and length of heavenly bodies. Astronomy is the study of these objects and geometry assists in figuring out their scope and placement in the firmament
Geometry in Domestic Activities
Surprisingly, mathematics plays an important role in the culinary arts. There are helpful tools, such as measuring cups, measuring spoons and scales, to aid in food preparation. However, some background in measurement, fractions and geometry is necessary when cooking and baking. Chefs need to be able to measure and weigh ingredients, time recipes and adjust and measure cooking temperatures.
● Grade 6 & 7 children learned about the importance of Geometry by visualising shapes and doing mathematical drawings on graphs.
● They learned different transformations. They made greetings on the theme of reflection. They did transformations on different shapes using graphs.
● Grade 8 learners learned about Area, Perimeter and Volume. They learned the difference and relationship between Area and Volume. As in prisms, Volume = Area of Cross section x height. They also learned the difference between prisms and pyramids.
● Seniors learned about all the angles in parallel lines, Pythagoras theorem and its application.
Restoring Humanity
“We are the world, we are the children, we are the ones who make a brighter day, so let’s start giving” — Michael Jackson, “We Are the World”
Think about some of the knottiest problems world is facing today. Climate change, wars, human right violations, global health issues, poverty, migration and so on… We have altered the world in ways that have brought in unintended consequences, creating new survival challenges. If we are to truly solve these problems and shift course to build better futures, we need to find ways of restoring humanity.
Restoring Humanity is:
- having a world where every woman, man and child in need can receive assistance and protection from the impacts of disaster, conflict, displacement, hunger or disease
- empowering people to cope and recover with dignity
- keeping people safe from harm by putting an end to violations of humanitarian law
- building hope and solutions for people in new or prolonged crises by investing in preparedness, managing and mitigating risk
- enabling people to take a leadership role and leveraging the power of innovation
- ensuring sufficient and more efficient use of resources to preserve life.
A key solution for restoring humanity comes from living differently each day in simple but profound ways like daily habits of hospitality, conversation, and friendship, cultivation of a desire to give and be generous, to appreciate and be grateful, to please and to be thoughtful, to think of the happiness of others and of ways to bring joy to their lives.
You must devote time volunteering for people less fortunate than you so that you can see face-to-face the hardships experienced by others. Instead of asking that your good deed be repaid in any way, ask the return favour to be “paid forward” to someone else in need. Your thoughtfulness will reverberate as many of those you helped will feel the need to help someone else in some other time. And on it goes.
Spend time with children and let yourself become more childlike, playful and creative. Look at the plants, animals, beauty of what nature created to your own eyes. Share this beauty with your friends and family by bringing them to witness the majestic wonders near you.
Provide the space for people to open up about their happy moments – it helps them to articulate in front of an audience what matters most to them, and it will help you to see the lighter, brighter and happier side of the people in your life.
Be Thankful. Thankfulness is an attitude that you can practice and develop. Make it a rule to write down a certain number of things you are thankful for per day. Many people start by writing down basic material things like your house, your clothes, your food etc. that they are grateful for in their lives.
Think about all the people you care about, your parents, your friends, your significant other, your pets, and your love. Write why you are grateful for each person and how they make you feel. This helps you to appreciate them and see only the good in them. It’s also good to write about the people that you don’t really like and find a reason to appreciate them. This can be difficult as we don’t really appreciate people, we don’t like but it can be very uplifting.
Humanitarian activities should never be performed in order to achieve fame or to gain a status symbol. You can easily achieve fame by the work you do. Lifting the heavy bag of an old woman is humanity, helping a disabled to cross the road is humanity, helping your mom in doing work is humanity, in fact helping anyone who is in need is humanity.
Look for humanity, and you will find it. Humanity comes from within you. Just because you’ve seen a few bad stories on the news, doesn’t mean the whole world is a bad place. The world is actually a great place — if you look for it.
“I can change the world, with my own two hands/ Make a better place, with my own two hands/ Make a kinder place, oh with my, oh with my own two hands/ With my own, with my own two hands” — Ben Harper, “With My Own Two Hands”
