RMS Knightly News
Week of September 2, 2024
Hello RMS Knights and Families
We hope that our Knights' and their families had a great Labor Day Weekend! Our September Honor the Castle theme is "Teamwork". Inspirational quotes often come from those who break down barriers and/or paved the way for others. These quotes can inspire us… through what that individual had overcome or experienced.
At 19 month of age Ms. Hellen Keller contracted an illness that left her both deaf and blind. However, Ms. Keller went on to become an author, political activist, and lecturer. Ms. Keller truly knew what it was like to work together and connect with other as a team. She accomplished so many things in her life but she could not have done it alone. Ms. Keller once said our quote of the week that “Alone we can do so little, Together we can do so much”. The impact of creating meaningful connections with others is profound and strengthens a community and us as individuals. Have a great week ahead Knights and keep builidng on our teamwork we established during our 1st week of school.

Recapping the "First 4" of the 24-25 school year to set the stage for success!
On Monday, Day 1 of the 24-25 school year, we met our Knights in the gym to distribute their schedules and gave an overview of the first day. The hours during the day, our teachers conducted "Getting to know our students" and working on our Castle Crew Community Builder activity.
Tuesday, Day 2- Each of the classes participated in a brainstorm activity digitally to reflect on ways we can honor the builidng (and one another). During seminar classes, we reviewed a technology expectations presentation.
Wednesday, Day 3 , we shared during each hour, a different element our house system that promotes teamwork, collaboration, and ownership. Our house system divides our classes into smaller teams called "houses". Each house is like a family that our students and staff will be a part of during the school year. Each seminar class will be able to earn points for their house by following our PBIS expectations of respecting others, modeling responsibility, and making safe choices throughout the school year.
Thursday, Day 4, we continue to set the stage for success by having our knights rotate to our different PBIS stations to review our success criteria in meeting the mark of respect others, model responsibility, and making safe choices. We ended the school day by selecting our house groups and holding our first house meetings of the school year
It was great to getting to know our Knights and providing opportunities for them to learn how to navigate the building during our opening week of the school year!

Personal Electronic Device Update!!!!
During the 24-25 school year, we are implementing a new cell phone/electronic device policy in our classrooms and common large group collaboration areas at Richards Middle School. Cell phones and other similar electronic devices will need to be placed in a phone caddy upon a student entering a class at the start of the hour and may be picked up at the end of the class period. Our teachers will have individual designated slots for each student on their class roster if they choose to bring their phone to school. This step is in an effort to limit distractions and promote engagement in the learning environment for all students. This includes when a student leaves a classroom to go their locker, use the restroom, and/or while traveling to another classroom during a class period in which the student will return back to their designated class for the hour. This does not include if your child has a medical need to carry their device.
Students do have the option to keep their cell phone or electronic devices in their locker and can check them during passing time at their locker and/or following lunchroom expectations for use. It is also important to note the use of headphones or airPods will not be permitted except for teacher directed assignments, the use of 1 earbud in the lunchroom, or for accommodations/medical reasons.
We thank you in advance for your support of this expectation!
Clear drawstring bag can be purchased in our RMS main office
Our knights do need to store their backpacks in lockers at the start of the school day. The only exception would be due to a student's medical exemption and/or academic accommodation. Any student can purchase a clear drawstring bag from the main office for $3 that can be use during the school day.
Check the "Student Success Resource" Below for more useful info.
Our Knights added their movie clappers to the spotlight showcases that highlights facts about them.

2024-25 Meals Information
Breakfast and Lunch are FREE for all students for the 2024-2025 school year.
We encourage everyone to participate. You are still welcome to send your child with a lunch from home if you would prefer.
Families are still asked to complete a Education Benefits Form, as this information is used for district funding.
The week of 9-3 -24to 9-6-24
Honor the Castle by respecting others, modeling responsibility, and making safe choices.
Outside Food and Beverage Policy
Outside food delivery is a safety concern. We do not want to have strangers and people that we do not know coming to our buildings with delivery bags. It also is a workload issue for office personnel. Managing multiple food deliveries during lunchtime becomes an additional responsibility for our office staff.
The District works hard to provide a variety of healthy, good-tasting food in its cafeterias, and students are always free to bring their own lunch to school. We will continue to follow our past practice of making sure students receive lunch if they forget to bring one from home.

To provide the most effective process for entering and exiting Richards Middle School, we need our families consistent help in observing the below traffic expectations:
- Our RMS bus loop is only to be used by emergency vehicles and our district’s school buses between the hours of 7:15 am through 4:00 pm.
- To help with our daily traffic flow, please follow our painted traffic arrows in our parking lot.
- In supporting our traffic flow for entering and exiting for all vehicles, please observe no standing, parking, waiting and stopping in the parking lot aisle ways.
- When exiting Richards Middle School at dismissal time, please utilize either our RMS Garfield exit, FHS Garfield exit or FHS Klein exit.
Please be aware of students, families and guests who are walking in our parking lots by obeying traffic laws, regulating your speed, and following the traffic direction arrows. Images can be found below. Please no parking or standing where you see a red x.
Our district security personnel will communicate these expectations to our families when needed. Thank you for your support with keeping RMS a safe travel area for everyone on campus.
PLEASE BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR ADDITIONAL SIGNS ALONG THE DROP OFF LANE TO HELP DIRECT TRAFFIC FLOW!
Attention students who utilize the crosswalk to walk over Garfield Road
This is a reminder to our students to ensure that you are using the appropriate area to cross the street to get to the other side of Garfield. Please see pictures below for reference of our crosswalk signs and striped area by the Richards Middle School Electronic Board. We want our students to make sure they are looking both ways and being aware of vehicles traveling on Garfield. Always wait to cross this crosswalk when the road is clear to do so.
We thank you for always being aware of your safety and traveling vehicles as you arrive and leave RMS at this crosswalk area.
