Jaguar News Journal
October 21st - 25th
From Our Principal
Dear JWE Families,
Hello! I hope this week's edition of the Jaguar News Journal finds you and yours doing well and looking forward to the week ahead! As a reminder, we have another four day week for students this week - there is no school for students on Friday, October 25th. This is a Teacher Work Day as it marks the end of the first marking period.
As mentioned above, our first marking peirod ends this Thursday, October 24th. Report Cards will be sent home and posted in the Parent Portal on November 1st. This is a great time for families to be sure they have access to their PowerSchool Parent Portal. If you do not have access and need help getting it set up, RCPS has created this document for families: How to Create a Parent Portal Account (linked).
We're very excited to be having our very first Title I Family Engagement Night this week! This Wednesday, October 23rd, from 6:30 - 7:30pm we invite JWE families to join us for some learning fun! We're excited to be collaborating with the Education Department at JMU this year on this event. JMU Math Education students will have numeracy/math-based stations with games and challenges set up in our gymnasium. The JWES Literacy Team will also be facilitating literacy based activities in our cafeteria with a Glow Night Theme - check out our flyer below! We hope we'll see you Wednesday evening!
An important FYI/Reminder: On October 31st, JWES has historically had a Book Character dress up day. This year, we are mixing it up and saving Book Character Day for Read Across America week in March! We will, however, have our PTO Sponsored Fun Run on October 31st this year. Each grade level is choosing a color theme and students and staff are invited to dress in as much of their theme color as possible for the day! The class who has the best participation/is designated as most spirited will be recognized and celebrated!!! The Fun Run is a fundraising event for our amazing PTO - thanks in advance for any support you can offer for this event!
As an on-going reminder, please be aware that RCPS has had some concerns and issues with younger students being unsupervised at high school games and events. All families are asked to be sure that if your child is at a football game that he/she is both accompanied by and actively supervised by a responsible adult. For elementary aged students, the preference is that your child sit with your family.
Enjoy the rest of your Sunday and thank you for your continued partnership and support!
Sincerely,
Sara Hammill

Counselor Corner
At JWES, we encourage students to develop a "Growth Mindset." This means believing in your ability to learn and improve, trying new things, and learning from your mistakes. Instead of saying, "I can't do this," someone with a growth mindset would say, "I can't do this yet, but I’ll keep trying." This shift in mindset can greatly impact learning and success.
A growth mindset sees challenges as chances to grow, not obstacles to avoid. You can help foster a growth mindset by reminding your child that failure isn't a bad thing, but rather an opportunity to learn. Encourage them to take on new challenges and view mistakes as normal. Praise their effort and persistence, not just their achievements.
Sharing your own stories of overcoming challenges can also inspire them. With hard work and determination, they can reach their goals!
Here are some great books that explore the power of a growth mindset:
