100 Days of School / 100 días de escuela
We recently celebrated 100 days of school. Our students in 3-K through 5th grade participated in a variety of activities with the theme of 100.
Among the challenges given to our students was making necklaces. “I enjoyed making the necklaces with 100 Fruit Loops ” said Catalina Martinez from third grade. “The best part of the activity is when we got to eat them. They were delicious!” One of the other challenges our students faced was stacking cups. 4th grade came very close to being able to stack 100 cups. “We got to 99 cups by stacking them in a pyramid shape, they fell when we tried to put the last one on,” said 4th grader Sam Granados. 2nd grader Bella Trinh added,” we only did 60 cups because the stack got too tall. It was very hard, but it was also fun.”
Combining taste and fun, another activity required students to count how many licks it took to finish a lollipop. While some did it in less than 100 licks, others took more. “I think the kids really enjoyed seeing how many licks it would take and if they could do it with less than 100,” said Carolyn Lira, 2nd grade teacher. “One thing they did learn was not to keep the lollipop in your mouth, as the saliva will cause it to dissolve.”
We celebrate 100 days every year as a way to have our children use math in different situations besides the problem solving, fact learning and diagramming that are normally done in math class. Activity days like these help our students become motivated to learn more.
