Academics - Preparing for State Testing
During the 2023-24 school year, all Central students will participate in activities that will help them prepare for the PreACT, ACT, and other assessments. This includes taking practice tests, participating in mini-lessons on key skills, working with sample questions, learning about test taking strategies, and previewing test structures. All sophomores will take the PreACT on 10/25/23. All juniors will take the ACT as the state test for on 4/9/24. Families do not need to register or pay for these exams. Our Eagles soar high with these assessments!
Behavior - TechTime
TECH TIME AT CENTRAL HIGH
We believe the more engaged our students are in their classes the more successful they will be. In an effort to support their growth and set a balance with technology use, Central High has established TECH TIME Protocols.
Ed Tech Time (ETT): Students are able to engage in the lesson with educational technology apps/iPad
Your Tech Time (YTT): Students are given time to use their technology for personal, school appropriate purposes
No Tech Time (NTT): Students should have all technology put away to engage and listen to the teacher or work with others.
Teachers will work with students to establish procedures and routines that align with these protocols. Students who choose not to comply will be asked to turn in their technology to their administrator. If a student has multiple offenses, it could lead to their parent/guardian picking up the technology from school.
Community - Eagles Take Flight Day
On Wednesday, October 4, Central students will participate in the first Eagles Take Flight Day. Students will participate in a variety of activities relating to college and careers. Students in grades 9-12 will have planned activities for the day. If your senior is hoping to do a college visit this fall, this day would be a good opportunity to schedule it!
School Counseling Department
From your CHS School Social Worker--
External Screening Inventory Requests
Dear parents/ guardians of CHS students. As you look to support your student, we know that you connect to external providers that sometimes wish to survey teachers for their observations and feedback. If you are working with an external physician that wishes to have this completed, please reach out first to School Social Worker, Dawnna Hill at 531-299-5637 or dawnna.hill@ops.org. The SSW helps to have you sign a Release of Information that allows for the observations and feedback to be provided directly back to the Physician. And, the SSW will help to have the teachers complete the inventories in the timeline needed for your student's next appointment. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you need support with this coordination.
Shine Bright Hygiene Kits
Central has fortunately been a receiving partner with United Way again this year in being gifted FULL sized hygiene and laundry kits (Male or Female products, and Natural/Straight Hair products). If you are interested in having your student receive and take home a Shine Bright Kit of preference, contact Ms. Hill, School Social Worker (dawnna.hill@ops.org) for information regarding picking it up, while supplies last.
External Community Resources
Looking for extra supports for your family? Wish you knew about community resources in our greater Omaha area? Ms. Hill looks to compile known community resources in her padlet, that is available for your access. Check it out and see if there is a community resource that looks to serve you and your family! Know about resources that aren't listed? Send them in! 2023-2024 Community Resources (padlet.org)

Dual Enrollment Opportunities
September 2023
Dear Omaha Public Schools Families,
We are excited to announce that the Omaha Public Schools will provide Advanced Academic support to pay for all tuition and fees for students who wish to enroll in Dual Enrollment courses. The district will also pay the fee to take the Advanced Placement Exam in May for all Advanced Placement courses. Our goal is that more students take advantage of these opportunities.
The Omaha Public Schools is proud to offer many advanced academic offerings for students in each of our high schools. Dual Enrollment and Advanced Placement Exams provide students the opportunity to earn college credit or college placement while they are in high school. Students who graduate with college credits are often able to save significant amounts of time and money when they enter college.
Students will begin enrolling for both Dual Enrollment and Advanced Placement Exams over the next few weeks. Representatives from partner Dual Enrollment institutions will visit schools soon to help students with enrollment procedures. This fall, Advanced Placement teachers will work with students to register for Advanced Placement Exams.

Freshman Academy
Freshman Academy
All is well at Central High School in our four Freshman Academy Teams!
Team McClarnon traveled to Creighton University the morning of September 12th and learned what our neighboring University has to offer. Students were led on a full campus tour and had the opportunity to speak with undergraduate students during a student panel. It was a wonderful morning!
Team Crandell ventured over to Creighton University on the afternoon of September 12th and had a robust question and answer time with the Creighton student panel and an hour long tour of campus. It was a wonderful way to spend the afternoon.
Team Townsend is looking forward to their Freshman Field Trip to Creighton University on September 19th from 9-11AM! Wear your walking shoes for a tour of campus and a student panel full of students from all the majors offered at Creighton University!
Team Sayers will have their Freshman Field Trip to Creighton University on the afternoon of September 19th from 1-3PM. Prepare to walk and be amazed at all there is to learn and experience at Creighton University!
Department Highlight: English
Ms. Baldridge’s AP Language and Composition students are studying rhetorical situations and the foundations of rhetoric. In class, students are analyzing Francis Scott Key's "The Star-Spangled Banner" and Ada Limón's poem "A New National Anthem" to prepare for their own argumentative essays. Before conducting a Socratic circle over the two texts, students from 2A (who are also proud members of the CHS Marching Band) created a rich and immersive rhetorical situation for their fellow classmates by performing our national anthem on Central’s majestic south lawn.
This week, Central’s state champion All Writes Reserved poetry team reconvened for their first writing session of the new school year. AWR is a spoken word program sponsored by the Nebraska Writers Collective. Each week, Central students are joined by two teaching artists from NWC to workshop poetic composition and performance. Throughout the year, they take the stage at various open mics around town and ultimately compete in a statewide tournament.
