Message from our Partners at Care Solace π
October marks National Substance Abuse Prevention Month, a time to focus on prevention efforts and recognize the support available in our community. Itβs also a moment to honor the over 20 million Americans battling addiction, remember those lost to it, and celebrate the resilience of those in recovery, along with the friends and family who stand by them.
Preventing substance use begins with open conversations with our students about the effects of substance abuse on their health. Research shows that early use of substances like alcohol, tobacco, or drugs significantly increases the risk of addiction. Every year that substance use is delayed during adolescent brain development reduces the risk of addiction.
Here are resources to help raise awareness about substance use and where to find help in our community:
- SAMHSAβs "Talk. They Hear You" Campaign: Empowering adults to steer children away from the risks of alcohol and drugs.
- Partnership to End Addiction: A resource hub offering evidence-based insights for addressing substance use.
- Natural High Foundation: Nationally recognized motivational storytelling videos of celebrities explaining why they live a drug-free life. Follow-up discussion guides and activities included.
- Harvard Medical Blog's Tips for Talking with Your Teens: Guidance for parents and educators on discussing drug use with youth.
- National Institute on Drug Abuse's Resources: Providing critical information for parents and educators on substance use and effective communication.
If you or a loved one is struggling, Care Solace is here to help. This complimentary service is available to the Churchill County School District community. We encourage you to visit their Substance Abuse and Bullying Prevention resource page, where youβll find videos and activities to share and use at home.
At Churchill County School District, weβre dedicated to preventing substance use by fostering open conversations with our students and community. Early intervention is key to reducing the risk of addiction. If you or someone you know needs support, Care Solace offers free, confidential help. Call 888-515-0595 or visit www.caresolace.com/churchillcsd. Letβs work together to build a healthier future for our kids.
IMPORTANT Health Services Information
RESPIRATORY ILLNESS
With the beginning of a new school year, and the close contact we have with one another, brings respiratory illnesses; Influenza (Flu), Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and COVID-19.
Symptoms of all three are very similar, which makes it hard to distinguish between these illnesses. Therefore, if you think your child may have one of these respiratory illnesses, please get them tested by a healthcare provider so we can prevent the spread in our schools and community.
COMMUNICABLE DISEASES
Students suspected of having a communicable disease may be temporarily excluded from school until an appropriate medical authority determines that the student is not a health or safety threat to other students or staff members. Written documentation may be required from a medical care provider if determined by the school nurse.
Students will be excluded for any of the following conditions:
Fever 100.4 degrees F or higher
Signs or symptoms of possible severe respiratory illnesses (Flu, COVID, RSV)
Diarrhea, defined as having more than 6 loose stools in a 24-hour period, or 3 in a 7 1/2 hour school day.
Vomiting
Mouth or nose sores (e.g., Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease)
Rash
Suspicious skin lesions (e.g., Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease)
Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
Unusual color of skin, eyes, stool, or urine
Exclusion may also occur for the mildly ill child if the child is unable to participate in normal activities or if the child needs more care than can be provided by school health staff.
LICE
We are all excited to be back at school! As we encourage children to learn and share, they also share things we don't want them to: Head Lice! We start seeing a lot of lice outbreaks at our schools this time of year. Please click the link below to learn how to identify lice and for information on what you can do if lice hits your home.
Attendance Reminder for Families β
As we approach the "giving" season, we want to encourage our families to review the health information provided above from our Chief School Nurse. Additionally, we'd like to emphasize our attendance policies and procedures.
ATTENDANCE GUIDELINES
EXCUSED does not equal EXEMPT! (State Law NRS 392.130)
Please note that any absence not excused by a medical/mental health professional or a school administrator will be counted against the student's attendance as per Nevada state attendance law.
Any absence that goes unreported by the parent will default to a truancy after three days.
Excused = NOT EXEMPT (counted against student's attendance).
Exempt = Medical Professional note provided or School Admin Excused (not counted against student attendance).
Notification: Schools may notify families of any concerning patterns associated with excessive absences; including but not limited to notes home, School Attendance Review Board (SARB) warnings, pre-SARB notices, and SARB attendance contracts.

π Migrant Education Program Newsletter
The Migrant Education Program (MEP) offers technical assistance and financial support to enhance educational opportunities and academic success for migrant children, youth, agricultural workers, fishers, and their families. Its primary goal is to ensure that migrant children receive the same free public education as other children. MEP funds, which are federal, support high-quality education programs for migratory children aged 3 to 21. These funds help prevent penalties due to disparities in curriculum, graduation requirements, or academic standards as children move between states or within a state. Additionally, MEP ensures that migratory children have full and fair opportunities to meet the same challenging state academic standards expected of all students.

School Highlight - Assistant Superintendent Stacey Cooper π
In todayβs fast-paced world, career and technical education (CTE) has become a crucial part of the educational experience. Too often , our students are groomed to focus on academics above everything else, but what about career pathway passions? Donβt they account for anything? Yes! Churchill County High School offers courses that promote practical skills and real-world experience that can prepare students for both college and career success.
Career Tech Education, also known as CTE, equips students with hands-on skills in areas like healthcare, engineering, culinary arts, technology, and the trades. Whether it's learning how to code, mastering construction techniques, or understanding the basics of hospitality management/culinary arts, CTE offers relevance for students and aligns their passions with the future job market.
Being college and career-ready means that our students have both the academic knowledge and the practical skills needed to be successful in life after high school. CTE courses promote critical thinking, instill problem-solving strategies, and builds technical skills for the future workforce or higher education. This dual preparation sets our students up for success.
On Thursday, the CCHS students had the opportunity to meet Netflix sensation Chef Jonathan Zaragoza! Chef Jonathan shared his struggles with traditional high school and his disconnect with learning. His inspirational journey was jaw dropping, learning about his repetitive drop outs from school, and his inner drive to find passion with his career. Chef believes βfood is about human connection;β and that his passion fostered his pursuit for a career in the culinary arts. What a fabulous visit to CCHS! Thank you Chartwells for making this happen for our kids!

Last week, CCMS hosted grade-level assemblies to highlight the importance of student attendance. As of October 9, 151 students have perfect attendance. All 151 students were recognized, and one lucky student from each grade level was awarded a $25 Amazon gift card. The assemblies and upcoming rewards reflect the schoolβs commitment to fostering a supportive and encouraging school environment for all students - transforming the school culture for the better.

Third-grade students in Laura Malkovichβs class had fun exploring multiplication in creative ways. They rolled dice to make their own multiplication sentences and then built arrays with the numbers. For example, when they rolled a three and a four, they created three rows of four dots to show that 3 x 4 equals 12. This helped them see how multiplication is really just repeated addition. They also practiced skip counting and learned about area.

Students in Octavia Merritt and Montana Koplinβs class focused on developing their fine motor skills through fun and creative activities. Students decorated bookmarks for October using glitter crayons, markers, and glue, all while enhancing their hand coordination and muscle strength. They also played with Play-Doh to further strengthen their hand muscles, worked in the kitchen pretending to make meals, and used blocks to build. These activities not only help develop essential fine motor skills but also prepare these young students for the transition to kindergarten by incorporating learning through play, color matching, and shape recognition.
