A Word From Our President
We're entering a busy season filled with preparation, showing, judging, fellowship, and change.
First, I want to recognize several individuals who have generously contributed their time and talents in support of IDGA and the promotion of the dairy goat industry in Iowa.
Thank you to Dave and Wendy Peffers for their continued work representing IDGA at the Animal Learning Day hosted by the ISU Block and Bridle Club.
I’d also like to acknowledge Judy McIver and Susan Sathoff for hosting our important showing and fitting clinics. These events were well-attended, and I had the privilege of working with several young adults preparing to try their hand at amateur judging.
Finally, a big thank-you to James McDaniel and the many, many people who made the 2025 Iowa Spring Classic a tremendous success. With over 500 head in the rings—an all-time high—these record numbers have left me, and many others, wondering with excitement where we’re headed next.
This year marks my 29th year helping our Iowa county fairs evaluate 4-H and FFA Dairy Cattle, Dairy Goats, and Meat Goats. From the beginning, I've truly enjoyed working with the youth—providing the support they need and encouraging them to stay involved for years to come. Currently, I am mentoring a class of young amateur judges-in-training. It is vital that we continue to invest in our youth—not only to raise up the next generation of dairy goat farmers and breeders, but also to train new judges who can help relieve the critical shortage we face in the dairy goat judging community.
Now, for some changes—I’ve officially notified the Iowa State Fair that it’s time for me to step down as Superintendent and make room for new talent to begin an exciting new chapter. I’ve truly cherished this opportunity—more than words can express—and I’m grateful for the time shared with each and every one of you.
For over 30 years, in one form or another, dairy goats have been a significant part of my life. Even in semi-retirement, I continue to travel across six states, working with thousands of dairy and meat goats through nutritional consulting. Although I’m stepping down from my role as ISF Dairy Goat Superintendent, I will remain active and involved in the industry that means so much to me.
Stepping away from this position was not a decision I made lightly. I gave it deep thought, always with the goal of keeping things running smoothly. When Ron Dengler passed the torch to me, he left everything in great shape—and I intend to do the same.
As I considered who to nominate to the ISF Board, a few names came to mind. Please keep in mind that this is not an IDGA position—it’s entirely separate. After much deliberation, one person clearly stood out as someone who will serve with integrity and dedication well into the future. This individual has a calm, quiet demeanor. She lives nearby, allowing her to attend important meetings. She’s mentored with me for at least three years, helped coordinate shows, worked at the stats table, and is as prepared as anyone could be for this role.
Now, just to clear up any speculation—it’s not Janice or Jerry Schwennen. And thank goodness, because they will continue doing what they’ve done so faithfully for decades. Their contributions go well beyond any one title. They are truly the rock of our ISF.
I will continue to support us—this community. I will continue to mentor this person and do all I can to help keep things strong. The person I’m nominating is Beth Konen. She is an incredible asset to this organization, and I’m confident in her ability to lead us forward.
I know for certain that your strengths have helped improve my weaknesses, and I hope my strengths have done the same for you.
In just a few weeks, we’ll travel to the Iowa State Fair and gather once again for a time of fellowship, tradition, and shared passion. While this year marks a new chapter for me personally, it also reaffirms the strength and continuity of our community. I look forward to seeing many of you there as we celebrate our work, our animals, and one another.
Bless you all and see ya soon,
Butch
Showing and Fitting Clinic Reports
Ma's Acres Showing and Fitting Clinic
There was a great turnout for this year’s clinic at Ma’s Acres, with 30 youth and parents in attendance. Scarlett Wood won a new pair of clippers, generously donated once again by Edge Pro.
Participants were divided into three age groups to work on showmanship skills appropriate to their level. Our youth ambassadors, Jake and Julia, along with several senior youth showmen, volunteered to lead the groups in practicing show ring skills and maneuvers. For some, this was their first time handling a dairy goat, while others had the opportunity to refine and polish their showmanship skills.
Butch Sowers led a group of amateur judges, helping them develop their judging skills using the showmanship participants for practice. In addition to working in the ring, participants also learned about goat anatomy and appropriate show attire.
Everyone enjoyed a potluck lunch and a short break before regrouping to hear Mena’s presentation on how to properly clip and fit a dairy goat for show. A few Share-A-Kid recipients were also present and were able to take their doe kids home after the clinic.
