PRINCIPAL’S PĀNUI
Kia ora e te whānau,
Wow, what an amazing few weeks we have had a Pembroke, jammed packed with amazing learning opportunties for our tamariki and definitely engaging in our strategic goal to be learning in and through our community.
Just a friendly reminder to make sure you have our school Etap App on your cell phone so that you can keep up to date with the latest information of what's happening at school. There is a calendar on the app with up coming events, the calendar is also on our school website.
Mr Stone, principal of SHS, came to visit our Year 8 students along with four of his student leadership team as part of the transition programme. He was really impressed with the range of activities we have on offer at Pembroke. We focus on engaging our ākonga in a range of experiences to help grow their skills and confidence in the hope that they will feel confident to engage in building on these skills and opportunties year after year through their eduction. Seeing all the opportunties that the school leaders had engaged in during their time at SHS was inspiring. Opting in and making the most of opportunities, was certainly a key theme that resonated through their discussions and helped to shape them into the leaders they have grown to be at SHS.
Not only have we had lots of busy kids, we have had lots of busy parents too. Thank you to everyone who is really engaging with our school and helping to make it an amazing place for our tamariki to learn and thrive. We have an amazing and dedicated community of parents. Thank you to our PTA for all your efforts this term raising funds to support our school, the Rimu Fundraising Group who have some amazing events lined up that support not only fundraising efforts but also bringing our Pembroke Community together. Thank you also to our netball coaches, parents who have turned up to support events and provide transport and our wonderful School Board. Team work makes the dream work and we are very grateful to all everyone for wanting the best and working towards the this for our Pembroke learners.
It has been wonderful to see our tamariki giving their all this term to the various opportunities that you will read about below. They are really aware of our ASPIRE values and are using these to help guide their learning and attitude.
Our recent Pembroke's Got Talent was an excellent example of this. It is a much anticipated event on the calendar, the students love it. This event is fully in the hands of our students, they choose and practice their acts and we provide the supportive and encouraging environment to help grow their confidence. This year the event was fully run by our Year 7-8 students and they did an outstanding job organising and running the day. Tino pai to mahi!

Happiness Highlights
It was wonderful to see all the children enjoying the annual book fair. Each of our classes spent time checking out all the books that are on display and with the books all being set up in Totara room for the first time this year the junior classes were able to sit down and enjoy listening to one of the many books on offer before going off to write their wish lists. Even our teachers have found some new books at the book fair which I'm sure the students will get to enjoy as well.
Our book character dress up day is always fun and the children always blow us away with their enthusiasm and creativity. The catwalk was lively as always with tamariki strutting their stuff and showing off their costumes. We had the Lorax, Pikachu, Katniss Everdeen, Cinderella, the Chipmunks, several Harry Potters and so many others that I can't possibly list them all.
Sixteen students from our senior school got to attend the annual Bluelight PCT Challenge. The day was much bigger and busier than the students and their teacher had imagined it would be. With schools from all across Taranaki competing with teams of four to see who would have fastest time to go through the PCT or police competency test course. The children had to run, show their agility by balancing, lift heavy objects as a team and climb over fences of varying heights using both their physical strength and their teamwork to help everyone get over even the highest fences that stood well above all the children's heads. This is the first time in recent years that Pembroke has attended this event and it's safe to say that it will not be the last time as it was widely enjoyed by the children who gave it a go.
Our two junior classes have had groups working away on perfecting their performance of a short play to preform at Junior play day at Midhurst hall. The whole class got involved with making props and helping the performers to prepare by watching them rehearse and giving encouragement. Rata class preformed a tale of a very distracted family and two cheeky cat burglars while Tawa preformed a play called Clever Cat's.
Our Enviro leaders attended another Enviroschools day, this time at Midhurst school. It was great to see our five Pembroke students joining in and learning alongside the Midhurst students for the day. We got to learn about Kōkako, imagine what a classroom would look like if we were learning outside, play a giant game of hoses and ladders to learn about how we can conserve water, learn how to identify some rakau and have a go at identifying which pests have been hanging out in the bush.
The senior school had an afternoon showing off their best dance moves and getting to know their peers at Avon and Eltham Schools at the EPA dance off. They headed along to Avon school where they were separated into mixed groups with students from the two other schools. After a bit of time working on learning a dance to go with a pre selected song they then took turns preforming their dances to each other. What a fun way to grow our tamariki's confidence and build relationships around the community at the same time.
In the Spotlight
Our senior students have taken part in Rippa tournaments over the past few weeks. First our year 5 and 6 students competed on a rather chilly day at Stratford Primary. Then the following week our year 7 and 8 class competed in Hawera. Then because it's the season for winter sports the seniors headed off to Jones Cup at Toko school. The students got to choose between being in a netball or rippa team for the day. At Pembroke we believe strongly in being an opt in school and it is wonderful to see our senior students giving things their all even when it is not a sport they take part in outside of school.
Pembrokes Got Talent 2024
Our yearly talent show is always a fun filled day in the Pembroke calendar. This year was no different! We had such an array of talented singers, dancers, musicians and performers grace our stage this year. The judges had a hard task picking a few favourites to reward but felt that every single person who was brave enough to take the stage was a winner. Our wonderful teachers even put together an act that gave us all a good chuckle. While Rimu class and Mr Sharp stepped up to organise the day. Announcing acts, telling jokes, providing some whole school participation moments to stretch little legs and being in charge of the music. They did it all and showed us a lot of our ASPIRE values as they helped make the day run so smoothly. These day's are all about giving our children the chance to grow their confidence in a safe place and their value truly shows through in our senior leaders.
PCT Fear Factor Challenge
Most of our Year 7-8s attended this years Police Competency Test Challenge at the TSB Stadium in New Plymouth run by Blue LIght. The students are put in teams to complete a physically and metnally challenging obstacle course. The showed ambition and perseverance through their girt and determination, giving 100% to the challenge and returned back to school fatigued but proud.
