A Note from Mrs. Shirley
Dear OHE Family,
Welcome to 2024!! It is going to be an exciting year for OHE!! I always love January and February because we get to see students grasp a deeper understanding of what they are learning. Students make so much growth this time of year!!
I want to brag on you for a minute!! Student attendance for the 2nd quarter at OHE was the highest I have ever seen it!! Our students were here and learning and that is a testimony to parents and your commitment to education. Thank you for your diligence and let's keep it up as we move into the 3rd quarter!!
I would like to invite you to participate in a brainstorming session to help us improve our school. We are inviting parents to come on Thursday, January 18 at 6:00 for an opportunity to hear about the vision for our school in the future and to gain input from parents about what you would like our school to look like in the next few years. Your voice is important and I would love to have as many parents as possible to attend and give us your input. We will have childcare available and the meeting will not be long.
January is always a month where the weather can be tricky. If we have to release students early or cancel school due to weather, you can get the information in several ways. We will text and make phone calls through Thrillshare. This will come in as a number you may not recognize but if you don't answer, it will still leave a voicemail. We always put the information on Facebook as well and local radio stations will announce the change also. Hopefully you will be able to access one of these resources to gain information about schedule changes for inclement weather.
Shine Bright, Oakland All Stars,
Sheri Shirley
A Note from Mrs. Ditto
Hello OHE Families!
Thank goodness we are back in school! I missed our students during the break!
Have you ever asked your student, "How was your day at school?" The response I usually received from that question was, "It was fine." That answer told me nothing, and getting more information was like pulling teeth! 😂 I want to give you some suggestions of different questions to ask that will give you more information and possibly start some conversations with your student(s).
- What is one thing you learned today?
- What made you laugh today?
- What was difficult for you today?
- Who did you play with at recess today?
- If you could change one thing about your day at school, what would it be?
- What did you read about today?
Shine Bright,
Mrs. Lynette Ditto
Parent and Community Suggestions
We strive to make Oakland Heights the best school it can be. If you have suggestions to help in this effort, please submit those suggestions at the link below.
Attendance Matters
2nd quarter attendance rate for 2022 was 91.9%. Earlier this year, I challenged our students and parents to increase our 2nd quarter attendance for this year. Well--you did it! The 2nd quarter attendance rate for 2023-24 was 99.75%! That is incredible!
My 3rd quarter challenge is to maintain that attendance rate for this nine weeks and to reduce the amount of morning tardies. We begin morning announcements at 7:55 (8:55 on Mondays). Classes begin immediately after the announcements, which is usually 8:00. If students come in late, they miss important information and feel rushed throughout their day. Being at school on time sets our students up for success!
2nd Quarter Awards
2nd quarter awards ceremonies will be held in the Oakland Heights Elementary School cafeteria on Friday, January 12th. The schedule is as follows:
8:15--4th Grade
9:00--3rd Grade
9:45--1st Grade
1:15--2nd Grade
2:00--Kindergarten
Important Reminders
If your student receives a food backpack, please return the empty backpack to school on Mondays.
Morning drop off time is 7:30 am. There is no adult supervision before 7:30 am.
Please put your student’s first and last name inside their jackets/hoodies/coats so that they may be returned to them if misplaced.
