Tenafly Celebrates Centennial Game
Former President Calvin Coolidge famously noted that the “business of America is business”. Coolidge, of course, was referring to the ambitious and prosperous nature of America and American productivity during the post-WWI era. The same could also be said for the Tenafly Football program in 1924 (see the team photo above).
Led by Coach Edwin C. Robart Jr. and featuring a backfield of “Sweet” William Grohman and big Earle Lewis, Tenafly’s first football team featured twenty-two players and opened their season with games against Leonia and Dumont. The Tigers would end the season 3-3-1, beating Dumont, Bogota, and East Rutherford, losing to Leonia, Ridgefield Park and Garfield, and ending the season with a 0-0 tie against Westwood.
Coach Robart would go on to lead the football program from 1924 to 1939, winning four championships – including the 1932 team, reputed to be one of the greatest teams of all time. Coach Robart was inducted into the Tenafly Hall of Fame in 1991.
This Friday’s Centennial Celebration will see Tenafly take on Ridgefield Park at Geissinger Field at 7:00 pm in what has been one of the longer rivalries (this will be game #77) in NJ football. Today’s Tigers are led by first year Coach Alonso Escalante (Tenafly football’s 19th coach) and Team Captains Cole Mogensen, Jordan Twiss, and Asher Zorn.
See you at the game!
Yours in Education,
Michael Ben-David, Superintendent
PS: The only thing more interesting than talking about the past is getting a sneak peek into the future - in this case, the future of Tenafly athletics. Have a look at a rendering of the new fieldhouse (pictured below) - one of the many exciting projects in the proposed referendum coming in 2024.
Stay tuned for more in the coming months.
