Message from the Board
Our Fall FUNdraiser has come to an end, and we want to thank each and every family who generously donated. You've helped us surpass our goal and raise more than $23,000 for Penn Wood and the students! Well done PW Bears! These funds will help make this year an awesome one for our kids. To celebrate, we held our Dance Party last Friday where the students showed off their dance moves to their teachers, and yesterday the teachers showed off their movement skills with an inflatable costume race. A few photos are included below. Additional photos will be shared soon!
We have plenty more fall events and activities coming up. Don't forget to ditch cooking tonight and order dinner from Lo Piccolo's for our dine and donate; tomorrow night brings back the ever-popular Prized Pumpkin Social (RSVP HERE); and next Thursday is the Halloween parade at 2 p.m. followed by classroom parties. See below for more details on these upcoming events and many more.
5th grade families (I know, how did we get here?!) – be sure to check out the 5th Grade Corner at the bottom of the newsletter. This will be a recurring section of the newsletter with important information for all the fun and exciting things planned for our kiddos’ last year at Penn Wood.
Sincerely,
Kristen Casalenuovo
Director

Eagle Scout Project by Ryan Wark: Thank You!
Penn Wood's Home & School Association would like to thank Penn Wood alumni, Ryan Wark, for choosing our school for his Eagle Scout Project! Willistown Troop 78 donated wood materials and Ryan donated his time to build four wooden picnic tables and a little library. The remaining cost of the project was covered by Home & School. Two of the tables and the little library were placed on the playground to be used during recess and family socials. The remaining two tables were placed in the back of the school so classes can use them for outdoor lessons or reading. Thank you to Ryan for creating more spaces for our students to learn and socialize!
Cassi Nagle, a 4th grade Penn Wood student, was very excited about Ryan's project and created this flyer to help fill the little library with used book donations. Do you have used childrens' books at home that you have finished reading? Consider dropping them in the bin outside the main entrance of Penn Wood so they can be shared with other students. You can also reach out to Penn Wood parent Carly Nagle at carlynagle@gmail.com for a porch pick up or with any questions.
Scholastic Book Fair
The Penn Wood Book Fair is November 19-22! See important dates below. More details will be coming in November, but you can check out our book fair home page HERE.
- November 19-20: Book Fair "wish list" days
- November 21-22: Book Fair shopping days
Please consider volunteering (clearances required). You can sign up HERE.
Volunteer Opportunities
Can you help?
Please see below for information about current volunteer opportunities. You can also visit the My Account section of PennWoodHSA.com any time to view all current volunteer opportunities!
- Outdoor Lunch*: Please consider volunteering for outdoor lunch duty so that the students can continue to go outside for some extra fresh air and sunshine. We will continue to take students outside as long as, and whenever, we have nice weather days. If you have your clearances and you are interested, you can sign up HERE. If there is inclement weather and lunch will not be held outside, you will be notified by Kelly Nolan. You can also reach out to her with any questions at kellypurvis@gmail.com or via text at 215-620-6135. You will receive an email from Kelly Nolan with instructions once you sign up for Outdoor Lunch. Thank you!
- School Store*: The PWE School Store will be open Tuesday and Thursday mornings before school (8:30-9 a.m.). We set up in between the cafeteria and gym and sell everything from school supplies (crayons, folders, erasers) to fun things (keychains, bookmarks, squeeze balls, bendable pencils) to PWE gear (stickers, bracelets, maybe more to come!). Please consider signing up – it’s quick (30 min), your kid(s) will LOVE helping you run it, and the PWE students really enjoy shopping. Sign up HERE! Volunteer clearances are required. Reach out to Liz Ryan with any questions (610-996-6586).
- Penn Wood Chocolate Bowl: Our Penn Wood teachers and staff enjoy a chocolate treat, mints, and even hard candy every so often. Home & School started a bowl of chocolate in 2020 and we would like to keep this going. If you would like to send a big bag or two of individually wrapped candies, please sign up HERE. It doesn't have to be the exact date you signed up for, but that week would be great. You can send candy in with your student and label the bag "Penn Wood Chocolate Bowl" or drop off to the main office. There are about 60 staff members.
- Classroom Party Sign Up*: Let's party! The SignUpGenius for Classroom Parties opened on October 6 for volunteers. Please read the guidelines in the link before signing up and thanks in advance for helping our students and teachers celebrate! If you have any questions, please contact Julie Finnegan at weareteamfinnegan@gmail.com.
*Volunteer clearances are required. For more information, click HERE.
Box Tops for Education
Don’t forget to download the Box Tops for Education app (Apple or Android) and select Penn Wood Elementary as your recipient. The app makes it easy to scan receipts and help the school earn money! If you link your Walmart account, you earn a $5 bonus and every time you shop, Penn Wood will be credited automatically without a need to scan a receipt.
5th Grade Corner
Hello 5th Grade families! We are excited to kick off this school year and work together to make it memorable for our students. My name is Marianne Johnston (Evan and Luca’s mom), and I’m thrilled to be leading the 5th Grade Committee with Kristen Casalenuovo. Throughout the year, we will be organizing special events and class trips to celebrate this milestone year for our 5th graders.
The 5th Grade Letter, which includes details on the 5th grade fee, is attached. This fee will help cover costs for activities and events throughout the year. We appreciate your support in making this the best year yet for our 5th graders!
