Susan H Nelson Newsletter
October 22nd, 2023
A Message From Our Principal
Happy Sunday!
I hope you're all enjoying the great weather as we head into late October!
I'd like to highlight in this edition of our newsletter several ways that parents can be involved in our school!
Community Advisory Partners (CAP)
Each year we get a few extra funds (in this case around $5500) to supplement our budget based on the number of students we have at Susan Nelson! We like to get input from everyone in our school community about how to spend those funds! We'd love to have a parent or two join us as we have that discussion. Are you interested? We will have several meetings throughout the year--and the first one will be in a week or two. Meetings will be in online via Zoom and start around 4:00 pm. The meetings will last only about 30 minutes! Let me know if you'd like to join us!
Safety Committee
We also are forming a school safety committee that consists of teachers, staff and parents! Our first goal at Susan H. Nelson School is to keep everybody safe--and that takes work and input about how we can make things better! Do you have any ideas? We'd love to have you be a part of our team. We'll be meeting to do two things: #1) Update our Comprehensive School Safety Plan and #2) Work on updating our emergency teams and actions each team is responsible for. Call me or send me an email if you'd like to work with us on our safety committee!
Survey
Finally, I'd really like to encourage you to take the survey that you see linked in the next section! We value you and your input and want to hear from you so that we can know how to improve! It should only take a few minutes but will be very valuable to helping to make Susan Nelson a better school!
Have a great week!
David Schlottman
Principal

Advantages of Starting at a Community College
Before Transferring to a Four-Year University
For many high school graduates, the path to a four-year university is a direct one. However, an increasingly popular alternative is to begin their higher education journey at a community college before making the leap to a four-year institution. This approach offers several distinct advantages.
Firstly, cost-effectiveness is a significant draw. Community colleges are notably more affordable than their four-year counterparts. By opting for a community college, students can complete their general education requirements at a fraction of the cost, helping them avoid the burden of substantial student loan debt. Moreover, many community colleges offer financial aid and scholarships, making higher education even more accessible.
Secondly, community colleges often provide smaller class sizes and more personalized attention. This supportive environment allows students to ease into college-level coursework while forming strong relationships with professors. It can be particularly beneficial for those who may have struggled in high school or need additional academic support.
Thirdly, the flexibility of community colleges is a key advantage. Many offer evening, weekend, and online classes, allowing students to work part-time or meet other obligations while pursuing their education. This adaptability can be a lifeline for non-traditional students or those seeking to explore various subjects before committing to a major.
Finally, community colleges can serve as a stepping stone to prestigious universities. Many four-year institutions have articulation agreements with local community colleges, ensuring a seamless transfer process and recognition of completed coursework. This makes it possible to receive a high-quality education without the initial rigidity of a traditional four-year university.
In conclusion, the benefits of starting at a community college before transferring to a four-year university are substantial. It's an affordable, supportive, and flexible way to launch one's academic journey and achieve higher education goals without breaking the bank.
