The Annual Grey Game, a benefit for Brain Cancer Research that coincides with our North vs. South Girls Basketball Game, raised nearly $2000.00 for a worthy cause! This year, the event was expanded to include the 7th and 8th grade games between our girls teams at Eastlake and Willowick Middle Schools. We are committed to aligning our varsity sports with our middle schools, and community/youth programs to ensure that our kids get the best athletic experience we can provide. More to come! Thank you to Coach Force and his staff for all of the work that goes into this wonderful event, and to our Cheerleading Squad for coming to add to the spirited festivities!

Excel TECC students recently competed in the SkillsUSA Northeast Ohio Regional Contest held January 31, 2025, at Mahoning County Career & Technical Center. Congratulations to Med Tech Senior Alexis Panzarella who qualified for the SkillsUSA State Championships March 18-19, in Columbus as part of the Health Knowledge Bowl Team.

Congratulations to Business Academy senior Dionna Chaney who recently took 2nd Place in DECA Districts on January 30, 2025 for her Startup Business Plan! (over 500 students competed). This qualifies her for the State Competition! Dionna will advance to the Ohio DECA Career Development Conference in Columbus, March 11th-12th, 2025. This is at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and Conference Center and more than 1,500 students from across Ohio will be attending and competing! Good luck Dionna!

SCHEDULING for '25-'26 BEGINS

Students will begin the registration process next week for the 25-26 school year. Counselors will meet with the students individually in their math classes over the next month. Students will have an opportunity to check their credits, discuss their graduation requirements, and make goals and plans with their counselors. Students will receive an email today with the registration forms that will help them choose their courses for next year. Counselors will then go to their math classes, help them register in PowerSchool and sit down to conference with them after they have submitted. Please take a moment this weekend to go over the choices. If students have any questions, please have them bring those questions to their counselors during their individual meetings. Counselors will be out of their offices for a significant amount of time over the next few weeks and it will be hard to see them in their offices during this time. Please email with any questions you may have.

We have promised our community that the Willoughby Eastlake City Schools will create engaging experiences for students. To that end, we are offering innovative new classes, aligned to our Portrait of a Graduate, that will give students more agency in their learning. I highly recommend that you talk with your student about these options for the 2025-2026 school year.

FLEX Classes

Classes where meeting time is flexible. We are running seven FLEX courses this year, and we will at least double that for next year. Class is held every day, but if students demonstrate mastery, each week, they can "FLEX" out, and either work on group assignments in other areas of the building, work on things for other classes, etc. The goal is to give our kids agency, autonomy, and teach them to manage their own time and responsibilities in a relatively low-risk setting. Career Capstone Elective Courses (NEW FOR '25-26)
Semester career exploration courses open to 9th and 10th graders. These courses will be focused on one of four career "clusters," and allow students the time and place to explore how their interests and aptitudes could match up with potential careers. Students will work with their teachers to develop their learning plan for the course, culminating in a public presentation where each student will demonstrate their learning. The course will lean heavily on the Portrait of a Graduate Competencies. These will be fun, engaging classes that will inspire kids to start thinking about careers earlier in their educational journey. Learn More: Capstone Courses

Cybersecurity Pathway (NEW FOR '25-26)
Cybersecurity is one of the fastest growing career fields today. The private sector is clamouring for workers with this skill set. We will be starting our Cybersecurity Pathway next year here at North. Learn More: CyberSecurity

WE Build (NEW FOR '25-26)
Each year, the Construction Trades program through Excel TECC sends EVERY SINGLE ONE of their graduates into full time employment immediately upon graduation. However, space is limited. There are dozens of other students in grades 11 and 12 who will be pursuing careers in the skilled trades who need access to this instruction now. WE Build is a partnership with the Homebuilders Association where students will learn the basics of the skilled trades here at school during the day, with the goal of eventually being placed on a job site as a "pre-apprentice" - during the school day! Service Learning Through Art (NEW FOR '25-26)
Have you seen the snowmen that line Vine Street each season during the holidays? They are created by our Art Club students. Next year, we are expanding this vision to include students who want to use their art to serve their community. Students will also be collaborating on a ceramics project called Empty Bowls, bringing awareness to food insecurity, and raising funds for local food pantries.

Internships (NEW FOR '25-26)
Our overarching goal is to produce future ready graduates. That means connecting with our local business community to ensure they have the workforce they need to thrive. To that end, we've partnered with dozens of local businesses to create opportunities for seniors to be released from the school day for internship opportunities in fields of interest (some paid, some unpaid).

Class Selection and Scheduling for 2025-2026

College Credit Plus

Please check out our resources for College Credit Plus (CCP) on the North Guidance schoology page and the North Website. If your students would like to participate in the program, they can pick up a CCP checklist and information about the program in the guidance office as well. All students that did not attend the meeting are encouraged to reach out to their counselor at their home school. Intent to Participate form is due April 1, 2025.

Seniors:

Seniors received information on how to apply for colleges, and a ton of great information that will help with planning for after graduation. Videos and more links are on schoology. Seniors are encouraged to meet with their counselors about how to prepare for college.

Sophomores:

Excel Tecc acceptance letters were emailed to all students last Friday. Please make sure both students and parents check their emails and spam folders for the results. Acceptance for students is due on Friday, February 14th. If a student does not accept by that day, they will be removed from the program and students from the waitlist will be contacted. If you have any issues, you can reach out to Mrs. Vaughan at Kirsten.vaughan@weschools.org or have your students see their counselor.

SENIORS - If you missed the deadline to order your cap & gown unit (which includes the tassel that you must wear at the graduation ceremony), please go to www.jostens.com to order it right away! The cost will continue to rise. All caps/gowns will be shipped directly to North with the rest of your class. Pick up day is scheduled for Friday, March 7 during lunch periods. If you order anything in addition, it will be shipped to your home. North will not accept any orders - all orders must be placed through Jostens. If you have any questions, please call 1-800-JOSTENS.

Senior Awards Night - Save the Date

The WE Schools Senior Awards Night will be Monday, May 5th at 6PM here at North.

2025 Washington, D.C. tour including Gettysburg

Tour dates: Thursday, April 3 - Saturday, April 5, 2025

The Senior trip is a 3 day event where students will have the opportunity to visit our nation's capital and other historical settings with their friends. Two buses have been reserved for this trip. All seniors in good standing are welcome and encouraged to participate. Due to only having two buses reserved for this event we will have to have a first come first serve process. Being such, starting February 18th @ 7am Mr. Hertrick will begin collecting a $250 non-refundable deposit to reserve your place on the trip. Mr. Hertrick will start the registration process in the PAC lobby at 7am - 7:40am. After which you may register for the trip in his office.

The trip will be limited to two buses. Below is the cost breakdown for the number of riders on a bus. Once the first bus is filled, a wait list will be created until we reach enough passengers for a second bus. Note: Scenario 1: if 59 students register for the trip on 2/18 - . Student 1 -48 have a guaranteed spot on bus 1. Student 49 - 59 are on a wait list. (If at the end of our registration period they did not get a seat they would be refunded their deposit) Scenario 2: After the registration period we have a total of 82 students. All would be going on the trip. Those 82 students would be divided onto 2 buses

Each year, our friends at Cardinal Credit Union present the Mad City Money Scholarship Competition. This event is a culmination of WE Schools' partnership with CCU to provide financial literacy instruction to our students. Teams of seniors can compete during the school day to try to win the "Game of Life." Teams will be given a career/job title, an income amount, and a family situation. Each team must live within their means while visiting tables such as "housing, insurance, transportation, food/clothing," etc.

Teams can register by scanning the QR code below. See Mr. May in room 116 if you have any questions. This year's Mad City Money event is happening on March 20th, and begins at 9:00 AM. Students will be excused from class for this event.

As part of our efforts to prepare our students for the next round of State Testing in April (End of Course Exams), we will be holding full length practice testing sessions in the next couple of weeks. The program the students will be utilizing includes questions similar to those that they will see on the state assessments in regards to type and rigor. This will give our teachers valuable data on exactly who needs what interventions as we make our final preparations. Please encourage your student to do their best on these assessments. It is critical that our teachers have the most accurate data possible.

The Class of '26 presents - Winter Formal - A Winter Wonderland. The dance will be Friday, February 28th from 7-10 PM. Tickets are $20 apiece, and will be sold during lunch periods the week of the dance. Guests are permitted, but must be in good standing at their school. Guest permission forms are in the main office.

Northern Lights - North's AMAZING acapella group, will be holding their annual sing-o-gram fundraising event Feb 13th during the school day. Students can purchase Sing-o-grams for their friends and teachers beginning February 3rd during lunch periods in the union.

Sing-O-Grams cost $5 and include a valentine, a lollipop, and a song sung to your friend/significant other/teacher during one of their classes the day before Valentine's Day.

2025 yearbooks are currently on sale for $82 for the remainder of the year. Don't forget to pre-order a yearbook in order to ensure your student receives one! Boosters is looking for 3-4 Booster members to help form the Nominating Committee this year. The Committee shall select candidates for each office, presenting the slate at the APRIL Monthly Meeting. Calling All Eastlake North Marching Rangers! We are having our first 2025/2026 information meeting on February 19th at 6:30pm in the PAC, following our (brief) monthly North Music Boosters meeting. Can't wait to see everyone!

The research on cell phone use and teens is clear. In order to provide the optimal educational setting for learning to occur, we are no longer permitting cell phone (or any non-school issued electronic device) use in classrooms. This will be shared with students by teachers on the first day, at grade level meetings by administrators on the second day, and repeatedly over the announcements in the days ahead. Students will be instructed that devices need to remain out of sight within the classroom, or while using collaboration spaces during class time. Students MAY use phones during passing time, study hall, or lunch.

Violations of this policy will be handled as any other policy infraction would be - with classroom level consequences, parental contacts, and if necessary, referrals to the office.

It is our hope that we can work together with families to help our kids find the balance they need with these devices in their daily lives. It takes a village.

It is critical that our students attend school regularly in order to reach their full potential. Kids will get sick, and occasionally, there are legitimate reasons to miss school. However, we would ask that you reserve those for only the most necessary cases. As I tell kids all the time, some days you feel like a 4 out of 10, but you can still get through your day! It will be harder, but you'll feel better at the end of it than if you stayed home!

Under no circumstances is there EVER a legitimate thing called a "senior skip day."

Parents - don't buy that nonsense! Send those kids to school! Feel free to blame me - say "Mr. Frei said so!"

Only absences with legitimate reasons are excused.

Having a loud home crowd is definitely an advantage for our teams! That being said, please make sure that your student is aware of our expectations for behavior at Athletic Events.

• We cheer FOR Rangers, we never disrespect our opponents.
• We never make disparaging comments towards officials. We are appreciative of their willingness to officiate our events, and we would like them to come back. It is not easy to find officials for high school events.
• We pick up after ourselves, "leaving the campsite better than we found it."
• Students must be in the bleachers unless they are in line for concessions, or going to the restroom. Standing around in groups far from the student section is bad for school spirit! We need everyone in the student section! This includes middle school students too. The top few rows are reserved for future Rangers!
• Halftime is when the Marching Band and Auxiliaries perform. Our band is AMAZING. Our student section will face the field and support the other 100 students who also worked hard all summer to make these nights everything that they are for our community.
• Finally, at the end of our football games, the team will raise their helmets in front of the band and student section for the playing of our alma mater. The North student section stays for this important tradition.

The following letter was sent home earlier in the month explaining our transition to Professional Learning Communities, and the impact it will have on students and families. Ultimately, the use of this collaborative professional time will allow our educators to tailor the educational experience to best meet the needs of our students.

Free fresh produce market coming soon! The Willoughby-Eastlake City Schools and the Cleveland Food Bank will provide monthly produce for any family in the community. See the posting for more dates and information.

You should become familiar with logging into two programs to help monitor your student’s academic progress. Schoology is our Learning Management System. Teachers post videos and assignments in Schoology. As a parent, you have the ability to access your child’s classes. You will need an access code to do so. PowerSchool is our Student Information Management System. This is where grades, attendance, and transcripts can be accessed. It is also where all emergency contacts and parent information is stored as well. If you need help gaining access to either of these programs, please call the main office for assistance.

Student Parking Passes are $20. Students must provide their vehicle info, insurance info, and parent signature by submitting the form found HERE.

Parking without a pass, or in an unauthorized area, could result in towing at the owner's expense. Make sure your parking pass is easily visible in your front window.

All current seniors will need proof of a meningococcal booster shot (MCV4), unless their first dose was received on or after their 16th birthday. Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial illness that affects the brain and the spinal cord. It is spread through saliva and can be contracted by sharing food, drinks or makeup, kissing, sneezing and coughing. Meningitis can cause shock, coma and death within hours of the first symptoms. Please have your student bring a hard copy of their updated vaccine record to the clinic; you may also fax the record to our clinic at: 440-975-3831.

As with all immunization requirements, students who do not provide documentation of these immunizations are subject to exclusion from school, unless proper documentation is submitted to the school in accordance with Ohio Statute 3313.671, which allows for parents or guardians to object to the immunizations--for good cause.

Medications

Any medications (including over the counter medications, prescription medications, inhalers and epi-pens) to be consumed during the school day require a completed medication form. These forms can be found on our website HERE. Along with the completed form, a supply of the medication should be delivered to the clinic.

Clinic Visits

Our clinic utilizes software to document student visits. If your child visits the clinic with a minor issue, you will be notified via email of the visit. For major issues (fever, substantial injury, vomiting, etc.) you will receive a phone call from clinic staff. These protocols are in place to keep you informed of your child’s status during the day!

Chromebook Repairs

Students should report broken devices to Ms. Bouplon in the library immediately. This should be happening in-between periods or at the beginning of a class period only. Hardware repairs only. Software repairs go to Mrs. Medic in room 134.

Students will be issued a loaner device until their original device is repaired.

Chromebook Loaners

In the event that a student needs to use a device because theirs isn’t charged, they can check one out in the library. Ideally, students will come to school each day with a fully charged device, but things happen. We understand. Repeatedly coming to school without a charged device, or any device altogether will not be permitted.

Loaners must be returned by the end of 8th period, 2:20pm.

An electronic notice is generated and sent via email to both student and parent if a device is being kept overnight or if not returned on time.

With the cold weather months approaching, it's important that everyone is aware of the district's calamity day policy. Please see the letter below for info about how and why the decision to close school is made, and how you will be notified.

All absences, late arrivals and early releases should be reported to the 24-hour attendance line at 440 283-2178. Please allow 30-40 minutes processing time due to high call volume at times. If you have an urgent attendance situation you may call the main office or attendance desk 440-283-2209. Otherwise, please be patient while we process calls. If your child is under the weather, they must go to the clinic. An early release will not be granted unless they leave through the school nurse.

Doctor’s Notes

If your child is absent due to illness or needs to leave due to a dental, medical or counseling appointment, they may turn in the provider's excuse to the attendance desk for an excused medical absence. These documents will prevent your child from being penalized for hours missed, as Ohio House Bill 410 requires us to track attendance hours. Should your child exceed the limit for hours, you will receive a letter, and we can no longer excuse your students' absence unless proper documentation is provided. Please Note - Drivers Education is not an excused absence.

Vacations and College Visits

All students needing time off for vacations or college visits should pick up a form to be signed by staff and guardians. Anything over five days must be approved by the student’s grade level administrator. Failure to report could result in an unexcused absence. These forms can be found in the main office.

Late Arrival

All students should enter the building through the main office upon arrival no matter the circumstance (Tech, CCP, class change, etc). They will be expected to sign in. No student should allow any student into the main doors. They must properly identify themselves at the attendance desk.

Early Release Process

Parents are not required to come in and sign their students in/out. However, we require a documented guardian to authorize the release from the building prior to departure.

Students in the Willoughby-Eastlake City Schools can anonymously report anything that could potentially be harmful or dangerous to any of our staff or students. Students can access the Safe Schools Helpline through the district website HERE. Students are encouraged to say something if they see or hear something. We are all in this together and need to take care of each other.

Students can also call or text 844-723-3764 to anonymously report concerns.

The doors at North High School open for students at 7:00 AM. Buses will not allow students to depart buses bound for North prior to 7:00 AM. Please do not drop students off prior to 7:00 AM as they will not be permitted in the building. This creates problems on days we have inclement weather. The school day ends at 2:20 PM. Students not staying after for a supervised club, sport, or activity must exit the building by 3:00 PM. Below is the North bell schedule.

Note - we are transitioning from 5 minutes of passing time between classes to 4 minutes this year. We feel this will help students maximize their time during the day.

Breakfast and Lunch are served every day at North High School. For the 2024-2025 school year, breakfast is $2.25 and lunch is $3.75. A la cart menu items can be purchased for additional cost. Cash will be accepted, but no change will be given at the register. Change will be credited to student accounts. You can add money to your student’s account at PaySchools Central. Information about PaySchools Central can be found HERE.

All meals include one main entrée and up to 3 total fruit and vegetable sides and a milk. Students may qualify for free or reduced priced meals. Please fill out a paper application and return it to your school or find the online application and instructions HERE.

The Food Services Department ensures that its operations are following the federal guidelines for operating the nutrition program. Federal guidelines prohibit the district’s Food and Nutrition Department from writing off bad debt as a result of charged meals. Please review the Food Services Policy Regarding Meal Accounts.

At North, we have a program designed to promote positive behaviors. It is referred to as PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support). Students are awarded Ranger Bucks when they demonstrate any of the traits we are focusing on – Respect, Responsibility, and Readiness to Learn. Students can turn in their Ranger Bucks at monthly Ranger Buck Stores, special events, and raffles throughout the year.

Last year we experienced an influx of students attempting to order food delivery services such as Uber Eats or Door Dash to the school. This is NOT PERMITTED. Food deliveries will not be accepted in the office, and any students attempting to open doors for delivery drivers will be suspended. This is a serious safety concern and consequences for violating this policy need to be severe. Parents wishing to drop off food for a special occasion may do so in the main office but we would encourage students to either purchase lunch in the student union or pack their own.

Communication is critical at any school, but with over 1,300 students, 100 staff members, and dozens of sports, clubs, and activities it is especially important at North! Each week there are so many events going on, that keeping up with them all can be challenging.

If you believe your child is experiencing challenges in terms of their mental well-being, it is important to reach out to your principal. To meet your child’s needs, it’s essential to collaborate with the principal and school personnel to explore resources and services available at school. In addition to Crossroads Counselors, the District also has family liaisons and guidance counselors who can provide needed interventions and support.

End 68 Hours of Hunger is a national organization with the goal of assisting with food security issues families may encounter from the end of school Friday, until the beginning of the school day Monday morning. For some students, the dependable hot meals served during school are the only ones they can consistently count on.

There should be no stigma attached to asking for help when needed. Our kids need us, and it takes a village! If you would like assistance from this organization please contact Robin Ungar at robin.ungar@weschools.org. She is our guidance staff member who organizes this for our families. Students come down at the end of the day on Fridays and pick up their food items in non-descript, unmarked bags (like giant eagle bags). Some parents prefer to pick theirs up a the end of the day as well. That can be arranged.

When CCP students use their district issued Chromebook, or try accessing CCP content from our district network, they sometimes encounter issues with things not working properly. To help with this, we have created the following form for students to use if they are experiencing any TECH issues with their CCP classes: NORTH CCP TECH ISSUES

Students can share the program they are having trouble accessing, the link that is blocked, and even submit a screenshot of any messages they are receiving. This will hopefully alleviate these types of issues more quickly.
