September is Suicide Prevention Month
September is National Suicide Awareness Month. Mrs. Summers spoke with each grade level this past week about the warning signs, dangers, facts of suicide and how to keep our students safe and supported. If you have any questions or concerns about this topic, please reach out to Mrs. Summers, our counselor, anytime.
HJH Week in Review!
Last week was the final week of the first 6 weeks of school! Report Cards will be going out this week (Wednesday)! Our students were busy in interventions throughout the week and we are appreciative of all of their hard work!
Extracurricular Highlights:
Junior High Football traveled to Clifton on Thursday! Our 7th Grade played hard against a tough Clifton team and lost. Our 8th Grade football team played Clifton close as well, ultimately falling by a last minute touchdown. Both teams travel to San Saba this week!
JH Cross Country took this week off from competition but continued their training schedule!
Our JH Volleyball Teams traveled to Bangs on Monday and had a great showing!
7th B Team lost in 2 sets
8th B Team won in 2 sets
7th Grade A (3-2) won in 2 sets!
8th Grade A (4-1) Won in 2 sets!
JH Band and JH One Act Play continued to practice for their annual competitions later this year!
Students filled out an interest form for UIL academics competition at the beginning of the year! We will begin forming teams for competition in the next 2 weeks!
Social Emotional Highlights:
Mrs. Summers spoke with all of our students last week during WIN to bring awareness to the dangers of suicide and the supports that students have both at school and at home. Junior High School can be a tough time for students. Our kiddos are going through so many changes physically, mentally and emotionally. While it is normal to have changes in mood and difficulty navigating newfound relationships, we want to keep an eye out for the signs of depression and the potential of suicide ideation! As a parent, we can teach our kids resiliency by how we respond to events in our lives. Some ways that we can do this are to encourage our children and empower them with a plan on how to attack each day with a positive mindset!
Curriculum & Instruction Highlights:
This past week, while students were out, HJH teacher participated in professional development to support our Math and ELAR (Reading & Writing) instruction on campus! All of our teachers participated in a seminar on we can support our students in their grade level expectations in writing argumentative and informative texts! We spent a large portion of the time, discussing teaching points on how to have our students learn how to properly reference text evidence in their writing and how to interpret what the evidence is supporting! In Math, we learned several strategies to support organization when completing math problems. So many times, our students struggle with math application due to a lack of organization in their work or in their notes. HJH is making a commitment to ensure our students show their work and are able to justify their answers in math with an organized explanation!
This Week at HJH!
Monday is a fresh start for our students and staff as we welcome in the 2nd six weeks! It's hard to believe we have already been through one grading cycle! This week will be another active week for our students! Volleyball, Football, and Cross Country are in full swing and we will begin practice for upcoming UIL academics competition in the next few weeks!
Our students are doing well! As we have mentioned, we are increasing the productive struggle that our students experience in all classes but specifically in Math as an attempt to raise expectations for our students and staff! As a support, we have created a recurring Math Night on Tuesdays after school from 4:00 - 5:30 PM! These events will be to support students and parents in their understanding of math concepts, support on grade level materials, and for general math fluency practice! We encourage all of our students to take advantage of this extra time this year!
