HES Family Newsletter - March 2025
It's Testing Season!
Our 3rd Graders have worked extremely hard this year and it's almost time for them to show off all they've learned. At the end of this month we will administer the state required STAAR test in both Reading and Math. We are thankful to have such dedicated teachers who have put countless hours into planning lessons, small groups and tutorials to make sure we can show our best on the test!
Other grade levels will also begin completing End of Year screeners including iReady, CLI and mClass. These screeners help us recognize student growth as well as planning for next year. Data is used to build summer learning for staff and place students in services where their needs can best be met.
Please pay close attention to testing dates and follow our campus reminders for these dates!

Within the month of April, we will be reading the books Last Stop on Market Street, I Know the River Loves Me, Me…Jane, and will be discussing inferences, plots and characters, recapping the stories, and identifying setting. We will be working on blending and segmenting words with five-sounds, reviewing our irregular words, and introducing new ones: your, want, go, no, so, goes, says, she, we, they, their, and were. We will be introducing prepositions, and reviewing capitalization of names and beginning of sentences.
We will be monitoring our quail egg growth in their incubators, writing about it and recording information.
In math, we will be working on counting up to one-hundred. In science, we will keep discussing the growth of plants, their changes, monitoring and recording those changes

Our second grade students seem to have had a restful Spring Break and came back ready to continue learning. In math, they will continue with problem solving questions with length, money, and data then move into time, shapes, and fractions as equal parts of shapes. In science, they start units on animal growth, behavior, and survival. In reading and language arts, we will spend the first two weeks of April studying poetry. Next, we revisit recognizing text features of informational text and text organization. Using commas in a list and reviewing parts of speech will be our focus in grammar and we will soon begin our last personal narrative in writing.

Notes From Around Campus 🏫
Nurse News by Kate Versluis
Environmental allergies are a common problem in children, especially in those that have asthma or eczema. Symptoms include a stuffy or runny nose with clear drainage; sneezing; itchy, watery eyes; sore throat; throat clearing; wheezing; and a cough. They may be caused by exposure to outdoor allergens such as pollens, grasses, and weeds; or to indoor allergens such as dust mites, pet dander, second-hand smoke, and molds. Having uncontrolled allergies can put your child at risk for sinus infections, ear infections, worsening asthma, and having poor concentration at school.
The best treatment is to avoid what is causing them. Your child’s doctor may recommend or prescribe medication to help control allergy symptoms. Saline nose drops or spray to help the sinuses drain may also help.
Let’s all do our part to keep our kids healthy and comfortable this spring!

We are continuing to Choose Love at HES! The Choose Love for Schools Program emphasizes the simple, universal teachings of courage, gratitude, forgiveness, and compassion in action. During the month of April, we will continue to focus on the character trait of Compassion in Action in our Choose Love Enrichment classes as well as in our daily Choose Love time each morning at school. Students will review that compassion in action means showing kindness to help someone solve a problem or feel better. They will also continue to practice their “Compassion Breaths” to help them show compassion to others. Once again, below are some optional activities that students and families/ caregivers can use to practice Choose Love skills and concepts at home. If you choose, the following discussion starters and activities can be used with your children to extend their learning of Compassion beyond the classroom/ school.
“To me, compassion is……”
“I show compassion at school by….”
“I show compassion at home by…..”
“I show compassion in my community by……”
Students show someone how to do a “Compassion Breath”.
Talk with your family about the benefits of practicing compassion. Why is this important?
Practice compassion in action using the activities on your April Choose Love Calendar that was sent home.
Practice saying the entire Choose Love formula; Courage + Gratitude + Forgiveness + Compassion in Action = Choosing Love.
