Eagle Eye JMS Parent Newsletter #37
Week of 6-10, 2024
Good Evening Jefferson Middle School families!
We are finally finished with our TCAPS! However, the show must go on! Students will continue to have learning opportunities in every classroom, much of it hands on and project-based. Our Eagles are expected to finish strong, and we appreciate our JMS families helping us to remind students to do their best every day, every class period, every minute!
Skyward Grades: Please be sure to log into Skyward and take a look at your student's grade. With four remaining weeks and student laptop roll up on May 23 and 24th, any movement in grades needs to start happening now!
Behavior and Academic Expectations:
As we enter our final FOUR weeks of school, occasionally the warming temperatures and the allure of a near summer vacation, can combine with a "TCAPS are done; I'm done!" attitude which can lead students to discipline trouble. Just like the dress code, our expectations at JMS don't change with the change of the season. You can see the JMS Student Handbook, the ORS Code of Conduct, and our Student Success Assembly presentation below in the email. We had another Student Success assembly right after Spring Break, but we would love for you to have a similar conversation with your student.
Let's finish this term strong! Thank you so much for all you do to support your children, our JMS Eagles!

JMS and ORS Volunteer of the Year
This year, JMS nominated Jay Adams as our Parent Volunteer of the Year. He was then selected by ORS to represent the district as its Volunteer of the year award. We thought you should read what his nominating teacher, Mr. Mitchell had to say about him:
Jay Adams is a longtime resident of Oak Ridge and has multiple children who attend Oak Ridge Schools. Mr. Adams has an extensive background in construction as a general contractor for residential homes and commercial/residential storage. As a parent and business leader within our community, Jay approached Jefferson Middle School to offer assistance in any way possible with the eagerness to help students expand their real-world skills and knowledge.
One of the classes at Jefferson Middle School, STEM Manufacturing, focuses on providing hands-on learning opportunities in many facets of manufacturing. In the class, students are presented with multiple problems to solve in the real world using many types of software, machines, and hand tools. Having knowledge of the new class offering at JMS, Jay offered to help with this class and others.
Throughout the year, Jay has made many contributions to the class and school overall. Starting at the beginning of the school year, Jay visited a school district that places a major emphasis on manufacturing classes and opportunities. After visiting Utah, Jay brought ideas to our school for projects and problems to solve. He also arranged a district visit to the Alpine School District in Utah with school system administrators and teachers from various schools. As part of our visit, we toured various high schools and programs that excel in manufacturing. Jay, as a volunteer, was instrumental in arranging this trip and paid for his own flight, meals and lodging out of his own pocket. Through this trip and many others, Jay has allowed our program to expand its scope and depth to achieve many goals that no middle schools in the state, and many high schools are unable to.
With our manufacturing program, students are introduced to various tools and software used in the real world to solve problems. Examples of software used are Fusion 360 for CAD, Adobe Premiere and Lightroom for photo and video editing, Excel for material planning and purchases, and 3D printer slicers. In addition, students are trained to use power tools, shop machines, CNC routers, laser cutters/engravers and 3D printers. Projects that students have completed range from designing and building birdhouses, obtaining, and creating pallet wood crafts and furniture, building picnic tables, designing and building arches and light poles, instrument cases, hydroponic gardens, epoxy crafts, and various other projects. As a teacher for this program, it could not exist without the help and assistance from Jay. Students are constantly working on/with potentially dangerous tools and machines. Jay has an extensive working knowledge of all tools and machines and can provide invaluable tips and suggestions to effectively use them.
Monitoring a class of students is not possible with one teacher alone and Jay, through his commitment to volunteering, has made the class an overwhelming success. The students in class value and welcome Jay’s involvement every day and often go to him first for ideas and suggestions. He has built a very positive rapport with all students in class as well as with other teachers and administrators within our community.
Jay’s commitment to creativity and cooperation with our school system has allowed the expansion of the classroom in a short amount of time. Through Jay’s help, we have procured funding for various machines, created a space and design ideas for hydroponic gardens, and created an outdoor classroom/working space for all students in the class. Jay has spent multiple hours on his own time meeting with contractors and administrators in addition to the 10+ hours he spends volunteering in the classroom each week. As a teacher without much experience working in the general contractor world, Jay’s resources and networking have enriched opportunities for myself and all students in our classroom. As an example, Jay has met with multiple contractors involved with pouring concrete pads and foundations as well as designing and hopefully building an attached covered area for an outdoor classroom. His expertise with building codes and construction ideas allowed this project to succeed.
Ms. Kala's Students EARTH DAY Celebration and Activities!
Earth Day is a wonderful opportunity for students to engage with the environment and learn about the natural processes that sustain life on our planet. Mrs. Kala's class, by planting seeds, not only contributed to the greening of their surroundings but also took an active role in understanding the cycle of growth and renewal. Photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert sunlight into energy, is fundamental to this cycle. It's a complex chemical process that sustains the food chain and regulates the atmosphere. By exploring these concepts, students gain a deeper appreciation for the delicate balance of ecosystems and the importance of preserving our planet's health for future generations.

ORS Core Value - Equity
Our relationship with you, our JMS Families.
As administrators, we strive to create pathways for your participation, ensuring that we listen and gain better insights into your concerns and needs. Here are some key points we’d like to share:
Collaboration Matters: True parent engagement is a collaborative experience. We want to discuss issues and brainstorm solutions together. Your voice is essential, and we value the perspectives that come from different members of our educational village.
Flexible Communication: We understand that family time commitments have evolved. Many of you have busy schedules, and we respect that. To keep you informed, we regularly communicate using various tools such as emails, phone calls, smartphones, and social media.
Authentic Experiences: When families do have opportunities to engage, we make that time count. Authentic experiences with meaningful opportunities for dialogue and relationship building are crucial. Whether it’s attending school events, participating in student programs, or contributing to our community, your involvement matters.
Listening First: We promise to listen. Your concerns, hopes, and expectations are essential to us. Our teachers invest time in communicating with you about your child’s successes, challenges, and accomplishments. We’re here to respond thoughtfully and address any questions you may have.
Remember, the village—comprising educators, parents, and caregivers—is responsible for nurturing our children’s growth. Let’s continue working together to ensure student success and create lasting memories for our families.

Expectations for Spectators
Dear JMS Parents,
We open every sporting event at JMS with the same comments about Good Sportsmanship. We believe that student athletes develop life-long personal and interpersonal skill sets by participation in and support of our extracurricular events. We rarely have any issues on this front. For example, the City Basketball Championship this past weekend between RMS and JMS was a rousing demonstration of GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP --fantastic fans, dedicated players, and supportive family and friends. Though we compete and play hard, we (the parents, the staff, the supporters) engaged in the good sportsmanship we want to see in our students. We thank you for that! Even though the Eagles did not come out victorious and the day itself was rainy and chilly, it was a great experience for kids and the many parents and staff members it takes to run this event. The comradery at these events builds into our great ORHS fan base.
However, due to changes in TSSAA rules, JMS Admin wanted to remind all spectators of the policies regarding expectations of spectators at any school athletic event. Whether here at Jefferson or away at another school, we hold our students and our supporters to the same high standards. Some of these policies are state level requirements. Due to recent events at other sporting venues in Tennessee, TSSAA updated their bylaws in July 2023. Article II section 9 of the TSSAA bylaws now states that:
For fans ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct during a contests, the school will be fined a minimum of $250.00. In addition, other non-monetary disciplinary action may occur, including but not limited to probation and/or restricted probation for the entire athletic program.
As such, any JMS parent or supporter that is ejected from a game will be required to pay whatever fine is assessed before they can attend future extracurricular events.
Game officials (referees, school administrators, athletic directors, and SROs) have the power to remove a supporter from a venue for unsportsmanlike conduct. Per the TSSAA website, "The most common unsportsmanlike scenarios involve coaches and fans displaying disrespectful behavior towards officials, players, and other coaches. This includes yelling and arguing with officials, making inappropriate comments, refusing to leave the court or gymnasium when asked, and even physically confronting or threatening officials." Ultimately, the definition of unsportsmanlike conduct will be at the general discretion of the game officials, and game officials control access to the playing field.
In the event of an emergency, the JMS administration will work with you to ensure that you have access to your student. Your student safety is paramount to us. It may take us a moment, but we will work with you.
The goal of JMS administration is to uphold the high standards which make JMS a school of excellence. To achieve this goal we ask that all or our fans adhere to the JMS code of conduct and follow the guidelines below:
• Good sportsmanship should always be emphasized by student athletes and spectators.
• Booing has no place at school-sponsored activities.
• Students and parents in attendance at athletic events should remain seated in the stands during the contest and stay off the basketball court, football field, track, and other playing areas.
• JMS campus is smoke free. This includes e-cigarettes, and other types of devices, including all VAPING.
Again, we rarely have these issues, but with changing state policies, we like to keep our parents informed. Thank you so much for being such great supporters of Jefferson sports and other extra curricular activities. If you have any questions, please let us know.
- Mr. Cox, Mr. Fowler, and Dr. Quilliams.
