Hastings Middle School 2024-2025
April 13, 2025
Dear Hastings Families,
As you’re reading this week’s edition of our Family Flier, I’m happy to share that our students have completed the ELA portion of the Ohio State Test. They worked hard, stayed focused, and gave their best effort—and we’re proud of them! For those students who were absent, there will be opportunities to complete makeup testing in the days ahead.
Looking ahead, the Math State Assessments are scheduled for Monday, April 22nd and Tuesday, April 23rd. A good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast can go a long way in helping students feel ready to tackle these important assessments.
A quick calendar reminder: There is no school for students on Thursday, April 18th. I hope this extended weekend provides your family with time to relax, recharge, and enjoy some time together.
With Spring arriving, we’ve noticed more students riding their bikes to school—which is fantastic! We do ask for your help in reminding students to dismount and walk their bikes once they reach our school parking lot. Our lot is quite busy during arrival and dismissal times, and safety is always our top priority. Likewise, I encourage our drivers to be extra cautious and watch closely for our young cyclists. The last thing we’d ever want is for someone to get hurt.
Thank you for your continued support in keeping our school community safe and strong. Have a wonderful weekend!
Warmly,
Penny Stires
Food Delivery
As a reminder, students are unable to have food delivered to the building for any reason. Please know this includes both students ordering it for themselves and family members ordering the food for their child. Thank you!
We’re shell-ebrating a fun new addition to the Hastings office
Meet Mr. Pickles Lebron Hastings—yes, you read that right! 😄 It’s been a blast watching the kids interact with our new Cumberland Slider turtle. Earlier this week, students and staff submitted name suggestions, and after an intense (and very official) building-wide vote, we landed on the perfect name. Stop by and say hi to Mr. Pickles next time you’re in the building—he’s already feeling right at home and he loves the attention!

Service Hours Information
Middle School students in Upper Arlington are asked to complete five hours of community service each year. If your child is volunteering anywhere this year or even just out shoveling a neighbor’s driveway (and not getting paid), those things count toward hours.
The information about community service and logging hours is on the Hastings website: https://hastings.uaschools.org/academic-program/community-service
We will be working with students to help them log hours later this month. Students should see their grade level counselor if they have questions.

District Updates
You Belong UA District Family Book Read
This spring, the district is offering a family engagement opportunity through the You Belong UA Family Book Read. In this second year of the event, we are inviting families to journey through Nic Stone’s book Clean Getaway together and then gather with us at the Amelita Mirolo Barn for a family “book talk” from 6:30 - 8 p.m., May 1, 2025.
New this year, UAHS students in our Teaching Professions Pathway will facilitate the book talk for students and families on May 1. This activity is a part of their curricular experience, and we hope to welcome families in support of their learning.
Families can read about Clean Getaway in several locations:
Let us know that you will be reading with us! Click here if you will be reading the book and to RSVP for the May 1 event. RSVPs are requested by April 18, 2025.
If you have questions or would like additional support to obtain Clean Getaway, please email kmanderson@uaschools.org.
Counted Out: The importance of math education in today’s world
