EFFECTIVE IMEDIATELY - VOLUNTEER PROTOCOL
As part of our commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment for our students, effective immediately, all individuals who volunteer in Norton City Schools are required to undergo a comprehensive background check. This process helps to ensure that we are providing the safest possible learning environment for our students. Background checks will be required for all volunteers, including those attending class parties, field trips, and working in the building. Please follow the process below to register as a volunteer.
To cover the cost associated with conducting these background checks, the district will charge volunteers a fee of $25, which is the actual cost incurred by Norton City Schools. Background checks are valid for five years. We appreciate the dedication of our volunteers and thank you for your understanding of this necessary procedure.
For more information or assistance with the background check please contact the Norton City Schools administration office.
Holiday Party Information
We are excited to continue using volunteers to host holiday parties at Norton Elementary School! Holiday parties provide students with an opportunity to have social interactions with their peers and celebrate throughout the year. Please follow the guidelines below to help us ensure a safe, fun event.
Each classroom will be assigned a head room parent (MUST BE A REGISTERED VOLUNTEER). Head room parents will assign volunteers to one of the three school parties.
All families will have the opportunity to communicate with the room parent of any interest in volunteering for a party. ANYONE ATTENDING MUST BE A REGISTERED VOLUNTEER.
Our intention is that anyone interested in volunteering will have the opportunity to attend one party.
Only volunteers that have been signed up in advance will be allowed to attend a party.
No other guests will be permitted to attend parties (other than assigned volunteers).
Holiday Party Dates: 1:00pm -2:00pm
10/25/2024 Halloween Party
12/19/2024 Winter Party
2/14/2025 Valentines Party
Attendance Update
Last year, one of our goals was to decrease the number of students identified as chronically absent by 3%. We met that goal as our number of students identified as chronically absent dropped from 16% to 11%. Thank you for your continued efforts in improving school attendance!
This year, we will continue to provide parents with updates on their child's attendance each quarter through a personalized letter detailing the percentage your child has been attending school. Our hope is that every child will attend a minimum of 90%.
So far this year, we have 231 students with perfect attendance and a total of 478 students attending school at least 90% of the time. Please continue to monitor your child's attendance and help them get the most out of school by attending school as much as possible.
Ohio Revised Code has set expectations for student attendance in schools as well as establish definitions for excessive absences, habitual truancy, and chronic absenteeism. Our hope is to work with families to develop an expectation that all students will attend school more than 90% of the time.
The Panther Way - Communicate
This month our NES staff and students will be focusing on the "communication" competency. "Students should articulate thoughts and ideas effectively using oral, written and nonverbal communication skills. Students should also listen effectively to decipher meaning, including knowledge, values, attitudes, and intentions."
Students will work together as a class to break down these definitions into kid-friendly language and share what being an effective communicator looks and sounds like. Students will practice being a good communicator throughout the year through the completion of classroom activities and presentations. Our goal is to celebrate our monthly competency together at an all-school assembly and classroom activities. Our next Panther Way Day assembly will be in October for our staff and students.
Highlights from September's Celebration of the Panther Way Competency of "Be Responsible"
In September, students celebrated our first Panther Way day by attending a school-wide assembly hosted by Mr. Sackett and Mrs. Hallock. Afterwards, students participated in class activities around the Panther Way competency of "Be Responsible"
Students in Mrs. Cameron's class played a game called "What if everyone did that" to highlight the importance of responsibililty.
Students in Mrs. Kaser's and Mrs. Richard's class completed a readers theater about being responsible.
First graders had visitors from the Norton Fire and Police departments to highlight the importance of responsibility.
Student Report Cards
Student report cards are scheduled to arrive at home for grade 2-4 on October 29. We will use this time to share other pieces of information with parents about student progress. Along with your child's report card, look for MAP Reports, Acadience Reports, Attendance Letters, and possibly IEP Progress Reports. Each of these reports should give a snapshot of your child's progress this year. Be sure to speak to your child's teacher with any concerns or questions or call the office for further information.
Vision and Hearing Screening
Vision and hearing screenings will be held on Thursday, October 3 and Friday, October 4 for grades 1 and 3. Please contact the school nurse or your child's teacher if you do not want your child to participate in this screening.
School Messenger Texting Opt-in Message -
As you may be aware, the opt-in text message was sent out early inadvertently by SchoolMessenger. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused. However, the message was legitimate and we are choosing to move forward with the implementation a little earlier than we had planned. Here are some next steps for all of you:
- If you replied with a “Y” or “Yes” to the message, you have successfully opted in. No more action is needed.
- If you haven’t done anything with the text message and would like to opt in, please go ahead and reply to the text message you received with a “Y” or a “Yes” to opt in.
- If you deleted the message or opted out, no need to worry! Please simply send a “Y” or “Yes” via text to the short code “67587”. We have also attached documentation to this email regarding this, if needed.
If you have any questions regarding your registration call the main office.
Veterans Day Celebration
Veterans are invited to come and enjoy patriotic songs with our students as we pay tribute to those who have served our country. NES will be hosting a Veterans Day celebration on Monday, November 11 from 9:30-10:30. Look for information coming home soon to register a veteran.

Cavs Game February 10, 2025
NES is planning another night at the Cleveland Cavaliers game. The Cavaliers will be playing the Minnesota Timberwolves at 7:00 pm on Monday, February 10. Last year we had nearly 100 people attend the game and we had so much fun! Please read the information below if you want to join the fun!
This year, we are purchasing bulk tickets so that families can sit together. Seats will be available in the Loudville corner section and will cost $34 each. The price of the ticket varies by opponent and we found a game that is against one of the better teams in the league with a lower priced ticket. By purchasing bulk tickets, families will avoid paying any additional fees.
The process to purchase tickets will be to send cash or check (Norton City Schools) to the NES secretaries with an order form. The deadline to purchase tickets will be the firm date of January 10. Tickets will be transferred to families after January 10. Families may purchase tickets on their own after January 10, but will order directly through the Cavaliers and may not be guaranteed a seat in our section.
NES students will have a chance to experience the Cavs halftime fan tunnel. Please contact the office with any questions. Print the order form or request an order form from the NES office.
Help Wanted - Substitute Teachers
We are looking for positive people looking to join a strong team of educators to support students. Norton City Schools is looking for qualified substitute teachers. Substitute teachers need to have a high school diploma. Please contact central office at 330-825-0863 or the building secretary for more information.
Mark Your Calendar
PAC will be hosting a fall festival on Friday, November 1 from 6:30pm - 8:30 pm at Norton Elementary School. This event will have games, snacks, and a costume parade. Be on the lookout for information coming home soon.
