Keeping Up with Comm Arts
~ September 23, 2024 ~
Hello Comm Arts Family and Friends!
Homecoming week was a success! It was fantastic to see all the school spirit. Thank you StuCo sponsors, Mr. Harris and Mr. Trevino, and StuCo members; the dance was spectacular.
Communications Arts High School is named a 2024-25 Purple Star Campus! The Purple Star Campus Designation is a distinct honor created by the Texas Legislature to recognize Texas public schools and open-enrollment charter schools that show their support and commitment to meeting the unique needs of military-connected students and their families.
UIL Eligibility Check
Please be aware that if your student participates in one of our UIL sports or activities, eligibility for those activities is determined at the 6-week point of the first marking period. Students must pass all classes by September 27th, when grades are uploaded, to ensure continued participation in those activities. Students, please work with your teachers to ensure you have addressed any grade concerns, and parents, please check your student's progress in HAC. We encourage parents to contact their child's teachers if they have questions.

Hispanic Heritage Month
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, SNHS will be hosting activities during the second half of lunch in the LGI for the next four Fridays to engage all students:

Panorama Surveys
Northside ISD is committed to educating the whole child to include engaged learning and student academics, safety and security, social emotional development, and support for students, families, and staff. Therefore, we will be gathering input on student experiences in school. Students in grades 3-12 will be asked to participate in a survey.
Students who have developed knowledge and skills in social and emotional learning perform better academically. Students who are self aware, make good decisions, and can regulate their emotions have a better chance of thriving in school, career, and life. Students who can work collaboratively and communicate effectively are better able to harness their academic knowledge to perform in school. Collecting student survey feedback helps ensure educators are providing students with all necessary supports to achieve academic success.
NISD is utilizing surveys to inform practices around supporting students, teachers, and families. This information helps teachers plan targeted strategies and supports as needed. Results support skill development for whole classrooms, small groups, or individual students. This way, all students have the opportunity to build the skills needed to be successful in the classroom.
Students’ responses will provide invaluable insight into their experiences. District and school leaders will use their responses to better support the whole child and improve both our district and our schools.
Surveys will be administered during class time between October 7th and 18th. If you do not want your child to participate in the survey, please contact Elizabeth Lewis at elizabeth.lewis@nisd.net by September 30th. If your child opts out of the fall survey, he/she will also be opted out for the spring survey.

Counselors' Corner
Tuesday, October 1st, is Senior Night at Taft High School. We will begin the evening in the Taft Auditorium. After the presentations, parents and students will have the opportunity to visit with college admissions representatives.
Hispanic Heritage Month
September 15th starts the beginning celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. This is a time we take pride and celebrate the diversity of our nation, society, and schools. At Communications Arts HS, we celebrate all but especially feature our students who receive the National Hispanic Recognition status from the College Board based on the AP exam scores. The announcements highlight these students' achievements with a brief bio and future aspirations. Their pictures are displayed in our hallway glass case for all to see their proud achievement. Thank you for making our school proud and shining!

September is Suicide Prevention Month
#BeThe1To is the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline’s message for National Suicide Prevention Month and beyond, which helps spread the word about actions we can all take to prevent suicide. The Lifeline network and its partners are working to change the conversation from suicide to suicide prevention to actions that can promote healing, help, and give hope.
- Ask - Research shows people who are having thoughts of suicide feel relief when someone asks after them in a caring way. Findings suggest acknowledging and talking about suicide may reduce rather than increase suicidal ideation.
- Be There - Individuals are more likely to feel less depressed, less suicidal, less overwhelmed, and more hopeful after speaking to someone who listens without judgment.
- Keep them Safe - Several studies have indicated that when lethal means are made less available or less deadly, suicide rates by that method decline, and frequently, suicide rates overall decline.
- Help them Stay Connected -Studies indicate that helping someone at risk create a network of resources and individuals for support and safety can help them take positive action and reduce feelings of hopelessness.
- Follow-Up - Studies have also shown that brief, low-cost intervention and supportive, ongoing contact may be an important part of suicide prevention, especially for individuals after they have been discharged from hospitals or care services.

HB 114
The Texas Legislature recently enacted HB 114, requiring all school districts to implement mandatory disciplinary alternative education program (DAEP) placement for students found in possession of, using, selling, giving, or delivering e-cigarettes or vaping devices on school grounds or at a school-related event.
This alternative school placement, required by law, is made regardless of whether the substance being vaped is a controlled substance or not.
