District Weekly Updates

National Charter Schools Week!
This week, we celebrate National Charter Schools Week! Charter schools began as schools of choice, designed to provide alternatives to the local public school district. Charter schools provide innovation, creative approaches, and personal attention to students in order to improve student achievement. In New Jersey, there are 88 public charter schools that serve over 54,000 students. Charter schools are located in 18 of the 21 counties in the state. This year’s theme is Above and Beyond. Above and Beyond speaks to the extraordinary work charter schools do for their students, families and communities.
Let’s have some fun this week celebrating #Charterlove:
Monday, May 11-Wear your school colors or school uniform
Tuesday, May 12-Show off your teaching or learning space
Wednesday, May 13-Let us know how you are staying happy and healthy
Thursday, May 14-Take a look back with your charter school beginnings
Friday, May 15-Share why you love your school with #Charter School love
Saturday, May 16-For fun, dress as a charter school superhero!
Special Education Week - May 11-16, 2020
In addition to National Charter Schools Week, we also celebrate Special Education Week. Thank you to all of our teachers, paraprofessionals, social workers, guidance counselors, and case manager for supporting our inclusive classroom environments for our students with disabilities. This year’s Special Education Week theme is, “Creating, Learning, Growing.”
So many ways to celebrate, recognize, and acknowledge the work we do this week!

Mr. Matthew Yard - Poetry writing class
My students have been working on writing poetry. I thought this would be a good way to end April (National Poetry Month) as it would give students a chance to write more creatively and reflectively. They have been reading a certain poem with a focus on analyzing a certain element, then the next day using it as a model/template for their own poems. I think this has helped to build student confidence and engagement to start MP4. The virtual format has allowed me to share videos of poets actually reading their work, which the students have enjoyed. I even hosted a Google Meeting "Poetry Reading" where some of my honors students read their poems out loud to each other! I have attach some student poems here for you to read.

About US
When the school first opened in 2010, it did not have the books, tables, or classrooms necessary for students to be in an adequate learning environment. Even the principal, at the time, had to serve as a lunch aide. Since then, AUL has developed to help students receive the education they deserve. AUL has expanded by opening two new campuses, expecting to provide the opportunity for students to continue to succeed, with graduation and college admission, as two of its goals.
AUL offers an advanced academic track and AP courses.
AUL Mission: To employ an educational design and experience that merges the highest standards of academic excellence while fostering convictions and commitment to social and economic justice.
