THE VIKING
Hinesburg Community School - October 4, 2024
THE PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Dear HCS Families,
It was nice to see so many families at the PreK-4 Open House and Essential Arts Night on Wednesday. Open House is a wonderful time to visit your child's classroom and teacher, meet the Essential Arts teachers as well as other students and parents.
As a reminder, there will be no school on Thursday, October 10 for Parent/Teacher Conferences/InService and no school on Friday, October 11. Conferences are a perfect time to meet with your child’s teaching team. Each teacher has valuable insights regarding your student's experiences at school and can give you a more complete picture of their day. It is also a great way for teachers and caregivers to collaborate to support the learning of our children. The caregiver and teacher partnership is a valuable tool for the success and growth of our children.
A gentle reminder to only use the Handicap spaces if you have a registrered handicap placard, even just for a moment. It has been reported that parents are using these spots for morning drop offs and afternoon pick-ups.
Enjoy the beautiful weekend!
Warmly,
Suzan and Tim

CVSD SUPERINTENDENT SEARCH
Dear CVSD Community,
Earlier this year, the CVSD school board announced the hiring of Adam Bunting as interim superintendent of our district for this school year. At the same time, we announced that we would conduct a thorough search for a permanent superintendent during the 2024-25 school year that included obtaining community input.
The board is pleased to announce that we have begun the process of identifying the next permanent superintendent of our district and extend an invitation to the community to get involved in the process. The search will be facilitated by CVSD’s Director of Human Resources (HR). Information about how to get involved is included on our website, https://www.cvsdvt.org/. Scroll down to the headline for the Superintendent Search.
Throughout the fall and early winter. we will provide the community with periodic updates on our progress. Thank you for your continued support of our schools.
Sincerely,
Meghan Metzler, Chair, CVSD School Board
Keith Roberts, Chair, CVSD HR Committee
PiE FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT AT HCS!
The online HCS Apparel Store will be live between October 1- October 13th. There is something for everyone, including hats, sweatshirts, t-shirts, travel mugs, fleece and performance vests.
Click here to access the store and place your order!
*Orders will be packaged individually by order and picked up by a PiE volunteer to save on shipping and maximize the funds coming back to HCS. There will be two opportunities to collect your items at HCS after school or you can request that your order be sent home with your student.
UNCLAIMED ITEMS IN LOST & FOUND TO BE DONATED TO LOCAL CHARITY
With the cool mornings and the warm afternoons, we have many sweaters, hoodies, sweatshirts and water bottles that have already made their way to the lost and found table in the lobby.
Please remind your child(ren) to check the lost and found for their missing items. We hate to give away people's clothes/water bottles/lunch boxes but we have a limited amount of space to store them. UNCLAIMED ITEMS WILL BE DONATED AFTER 10/10/2024.
HOUSEHOLD INFORMATION FORM FOR FREE AND REDUCED MEALS
Even though free and reduced meal applications are no longer required for free meals, the Vermont Agency of Education asks that all families complete the Household Information Form. Thank you.

2024-2025 PiE GRANTS
It's that time again...
The 2024-25 PiE Grant application and guidelines are available now and we can't wait to see what special projects and ideas you all have in the works! This year, PiE is able to allocate $5,000 to our grant program again, which we are thrilled to do. PiE Grants will be accepted until October 12th. Staff, teachers and families are eligible to submit an application.
Maybe you're hoping to expand your outdoor classroom offering, or incorporate more hands-on tools to supplement your curriculum, or provide an enrichment experience outside the classroom? We hope you'll think about above and beyond items that can enhance the learning environment, your teaching experience and the daily educational experience for HCS students of all ages. No idea is too far outside the box!
LOOKING FOR A FEW GRADE 1 AND GRADE 2 CLASSROOM VOLUNTEERS
Want to learn more about nature? Eager to share the joy of discovery with your children and their classmates? Become a Four Winds classroom volunteer at Hinesburg Community School!
Adult volunteers (HCS parents, grandparents, or community members) meet for two hours/month during the school year for a workshop taught by a naturalist from the Four Winds Nature Institute staff. Each month they'll learn about a fascinating natural science topic with activities designed to teach children in grades K-6 about this topic. Then, later in the month, volunteers (working in partners) will bring these lessons to the classes and take the children outdoors, leading them through the activities.
We currently need a few more volunteers for our Grade 1 and Grade 2 classrooms!**
For more information, contact Sara Lovitz, Volunteer Program Coordinator at 802 289 9440 or email at saralovitz@gmail.com
