GET TO KNOW KATIE HEGSETH
Have a question about Community Education & Recreation? Want to offer a class to the community? Call 651-385-4565.
One of the new faces in the department is team members Katie Hegseth. The Winger alumni brings a background in public safety -- you used to hear her voice when you dialed 911 -- and home care to the job.
What prompted you to join the Community Education & Recreation team?
I have always been a helper so when the time came to start a new career that was at the forefront of my mind. As a former waitstaff and 911 dispatcher, serving and helping others has always been at the heart of my work experience. I am excited for the opportunity to serve our community in this new position.
What is something you’ve learned about Community Ed that you think the community should know?
Community Education & Recreation offers so many classes and opportunities for Red Wing and the surrounding communities. There is really something for everyone! Call and get registered today!
The department recently released its fall course catalog. If you could take one class today, what would it be and why?
Oh goodness, there are so many classes I would love to take! I do not have an artistic bone in my body, but would love to try a Bob Ross “Wet-on-Wet” Painting class (my tween daughter would be impressed -- LOL) or maybe try my hand at the clay wheel in Clay Exploration on the Wheel.
What do you and your family enjoy doing outside of school?
Fall is my favorite time of year so we spend a lot of time outside on our patio grilling, making pizzas, and hanging out. There is usually football on the TV, a bonfire going and some rowdy kids running around. It is simply the best time!

ChromeCare Protection window closes Sept. 30
Enroll today!
Red Wing Public Schools provides all students in grades K-12 with a Chromebook device to use for learning and collaboration, but only those in grades 5-12 leave the classroom.
Because these older students and their families are financially responsible for any damage, the district makes a ChromeCare Protection Plan available. This plan is only $15 and can save families hundreds of dollars during the course of the year. The deadline is Sept. 30, and coverage extends through Sept. 30 of the 2025-2026 school year.

RWHS adds Wednesday enrichment period
Beginning Sept. 25, RWHS will have a modified bell schedule almost every Wednesday. This is so student groups will have an opportunity to meet during the school day rather than before or after classes. Students also will have access to other enrichment opportunities.
The school start and end time is the same for these days, but the regular seven classes periods will be shortened by 5-7 minutes to create an additional period for enrichment time.
Also during this time, staff will begin to implement intervention time to promote and grow academic success for all students and be intentional about the ways staff support our students.

School Board Vice Chair Terese Bjornstad (front center) was the mystery server at Burnside Elementary School last week. Pictured are (front) Justa Stabe, and Teresa Frazier; (back) Juli Northey, Jayne Sachen, Katie Neal and Yuliia Hokolov. Students, did you know that "Mrs. B" taught school in Red Wing.
