Message from the Superintendent
Like you, I am feeling the need to connect with people. This week I made a video message for students. It's being shared on social media, and I am hoping you will show it to your students.
I want students to know we miss them, and are proud of them. It's a strange time having all of our learning at home. I know they miss their teachers, and teachers miss them!
Celebrating Principal Appreciation Day
Social-Emotional Learning: Give Us Your Feedback
Social-emotional learning is essential for preparing students to be healthy and productive members of our society. During this past year, a team of representatives including students, parents, staff, teachers, counselors, social workers, school psychologists, and administrators met to create a vision and select resources for LOSD.
After using the LOSD Equity Lens they determined that Character Strong/Purposeful People most closely aligns with the equity statement that each and every student grades K-12 has meaningful access to a high-quality education and opportunities to thrive.
Character Strong/Purposeful People curriculum allows students in our schools to forge meaningful relationships, build positive communities, focus on social-emotional learning and develop character in a way that is inclusive of all students in our district. You can learn more about Character Strong at www.characterstrong.com.
Please help provide feedback for our efforts by clicking here to taking this one minute survey.
Distance Learning Family Survey Feedback
Thank you all who shared how you are feeling and how you and your students are experiencing distance learning. Through the survey, families reported that your stress level and overall satisfaction doing school work from home are both at around 50 percent. When asked about available capacity for additional learning opportunities, families reported:
- We are overwhelmed and need you to tone it down. 20%
- We feel that the amount expected is about right. 55%
- We feel that you're are not offering enough for our students. 25%
Your feedback, including additional comments you shared, are helping inform how we continuously improve distance learning experiences.

Tips for Motivating Students to Learn
It can be hard to motivate our children to learn at home. LOSD behavior specialists have created a video about what parents can do to structure things differently at home to increase student's expectations to learn. Doing schoolwork with home rules and expectations may work for some students, but not all. When it's time for school at home, setting expectations differently from typical home life may help.

Reminder: Outside School Facilities Closed
Until further notice, LOSD needs to follow executive orders that mandates school campuses remain closed through June 30. That includes school fields, tracks, courts and playgrounds. When the Governor's reopening plan includes athletic facilities, the previous mandate may relax and we may be able to reopen our facilities. Thank you for your continued cooperation for the safety and well being of all in our community.
Be Sure to Wear Face Coverings at School Pickups
With new guidance from the CDC, everyone involved in meal and device pickups, and other scheduled school visits, must wear face coverings.
Hunger Fighters Now Delivers
Hunger Fighters Oregon has now launched its delivery program for homebound, immunocompromised and at-risk individuals and families in Lake Oswego.
Requests must be submitted by Thursday to receive a delivery of non-perishable groceries on Saturday. Visit the website and click the link to submit a request. www.hungerfightersoregon.org/delivery.html
Hunger Fighters will still continue to provide curbside pickup service on Wednesdays from 4-6 p.m. and Saturdays from 1-4 p.m. Clients who pickup groceries will receive perishable items as well such as produce, bread, dairy or eggs. Hunger Fighters cannot currently provide such items to delivery clients, but it is working towards that goal.
Hunger Fighters is live on the Nike's "Give Your Best" platform! Nike employees who have already made a donation to Hunger Fighters can request a match by attaching their receipt, and employees who wish to make a new donation can find the organization on the Nike Give Your Best platform.
Kindergarten Registration Due Today
If you have an incoming Kindergarten Student, please click here to register as soon as possible - the registration deadline is May 1.
- On May 1st, any school that has more age-eligible registered kindergarten students than capacity will conduct a lottery.
- Lottery Deadline: May 1, 2020.
- Lottery Tier 1: Applicants with age-eligible siblings currently attending the same resident school will be given priority and will not go into the lottery but MUST register by the May 1 deadline.
- Lottery Tier 2: Age-eligible registrations received by May 1, 2020.
- Lottery Tier 3: All registrations (including sibling and early admission) received after May 1, 2020 are subject to availability.
- Lottery Date: May 6, 2020.
- Lottery Notification Date: May 8, 2020.
- All enrollments not selected in the lottery or received after the May 1 cut off, whose school is at capacity, would then be automatically overflowed to other schools in the district.
- Overflow schools won't be finalized until summer and we will notify families as soon as school assignments are determined.
- Most families are enrolled and attend at their resident school and are not included in the lottery process.
- Bus transportation will be provided for overflow students.
- Early-admission candidates must be assessed and pass the approval process. Approved early-admission students will be placed at the end of the applicant list for placement in their resident school.
- Any students who are overflowed for kindergarten will return to their home school for first grade.
Please Verify Your Student's Information
Beginning May 1, LOSD needs parents/guardians of all students enrolled for the 2020-21 school year to log into ParentVUE and review/update your students' information through the Register/Verify tab. This benefits both families and schools by:
- Ensuring that schools have accurate information to reach parents and other contacts in both emergency and non-emergency situations. Verification is important even if your contact information has not changed over the past year because the school may have incorrect information from a previous year.
- Allowing parents to review the health conditions on file at your student's school.
- Enabling distribution of electronic devices covered by the district's Technology Agreement
Seeking Volunteers To Help Teach Computer Science
LOSD is seeking volunteers for the Technology Education and Literacy in Schools (TEALS) program. TEALS connects passionate volunteers from the technology industry with our teachers to team-teach computer science at both of our high schools.
Class sessions will occur during the first period of the day, on alternating days, allowing volunteers to "go to work" after volunteering. Volunteers typically work 1-2 times per week.
If you work in tech and would be interested in making a difference in our students’ future success, please contact Grace Waylen (grace@TEALSk12.org) or apply at Microsoft.com/TEALS. Please share this opportunity with technical industry professionals in your network who would be interested in making a difference in our students’ future success.

SafeOregon
Parents who have concerns about a student’s well-being are encouraged to reach out to their principal, and to maintain strong lines of communication and partnership between students, families, staff, and other resources.
SafeOregon is also an effective way to report a tip regarding safety threats or potential acts of violence to our students or schools.
(Students should also be aware that intentionally providing a false report is a serious offense.)
