The Sequoit Weekly
Week of November 17th
Message From Mike
One of the most exciting things about my job is to bear witness to the countless talents of our students at ACHS. I enjoy listening to a concert, watching a sporting event, attending a club activity or sitting in the audience for a play or musical.
On Sunday, I attended the matinee of Clue. The show was phenomenal and showcased the talents of not only those in the spotlight but the backstage and audio crews as well. A show of this magnitude required many hours of preparation and resulted in an entertaining show for all those in the auditorium. Our students are truly talented in so many ways and we have a lot to be proud of at ACHS.
Mike

Bake For Good Program (NEW)
A big Sequoit Shout Out to Megan Bernard and Melissa Cleary who connected to the Bake for Good program. Through this program, ACHS got approved to receive the supplies to make loaves of bread. The program donates the loaves to service organizations in the community that help to connect families in need. Our Intro to Foods classes baked quite a few loaves that were donated to Open Arms Mission.

Spotlight On Sequoits (NEW)
Check this video out. Students in Mr. Salaban's class made a AIRLESS BASKETBALL using the 3D printer. A key cornerstone in this class is trial and error and learning from mistakes. They made a couple prototypes that worked but not as well as they wanted to. What you see in the video is the most recent rendering that acts just like a basketball that you would have to fill up with air. Way to go, Mr. Salaban's classes.
College Search Night for Junior Families (NEW)
Lakes is hosting a College Search Night for junior families that is open to all District 117 families on Tuesday, November 19 at 6:30pm. A college admissions representative will speak about how to start identifying target schools and factors to consider when beginning to explore college choices. Lakes and Antioch will have additional college search information event opportunities in the spring.
Senior families - prepare for the upcoming FAFSA (NEW)
Seniors can prepare to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) when it opens on December 1st by creating a student account at studentaid.gov. After a student creates their account and starts the FAFSA, they will be able to invite parents to link IRS data and submit additional information. Parents can create their accounts in advance as well, but our experience has been that it is easiest for students to first complete their portion of the FAFSA and then send a request to their parents.
Illinois State Scholars (NEW)
Congratulations to our Illinois State Scholars. This year we had 37 students recognized for academic excellence by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission. This distinction is given to the top ten percent of seniors throughout Illinois. We are very proud of them.

The Cardinal Crazy Mascot (NEW)
Another one that did not make the cut.....
Our new mascot, the Cardinal Crazy, is in the building. We have 10 applications from students to be the mascot. This week, we will hold the auditions and have a reveal on Friday. We are so incredibly fortunate to have our booster club, Sequoit Pride, fund the costume. The Chicago Mascot Company developed a couple of options after we had conversations with them. We had a couple of different concepts to choose from. Here is another picture of one of the concepts that DID NOT make the cut. The Porcupine was drawn up because Antioch's Main Street was once called Porcupine Trail and while this would have been interesting from a historical standpoint, it might have been exhausting having to always explain why we have a porcupine as a mascot when we are the Sequoits.
ACHS Activities (NEW)
ACHS Chess Team Season Begins
The ACHS Chess Team is underway having competed in a tournament at Glenbrook North as well as taking on Round Lake on Friday. The chess team has quite a few members who compete with the best around. We look forward to seeing them compete throughout the season.
