Tanglen Update
January 17, 2025
No School Next Monday or Friday
On Monday, January 20, our country will be celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day. There will be no school. Friday, January 24, marks the end of the first semester of the schoolyear and a day for teachers to work on report cards and begin to plan for the second semester of learning. There will be no school for students this day either. We are excited that we will get to see your children next Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at Tanglen! Please plan accordingly.
Mark your calendars for the event below! It promises to be a great evening:
A Reminder About Parent Pick-up
Especially now that winter weather is here, it is extremely important that you not park by the Tanglen sign by the entrance to our school at parent pick-up. Our buses need as much space as possible to make their turns, so please park down by the tennis courts or in a parking lot spot if you are wanting to park and meet your child at the end of the day.
We have found that using the queue line on the west side of our school on Hillside is a very efficient way to pick up students. I encourage you to give it a try. Thanks for your help in assuring a safe and smooth end to our school day.
Did you play high school sports?
The Lake Conference Needs More Officials
Do you enjoy the game and would love to stay active as we start a new year? Did you know that lower level officials can make between $60-90 per game? We have an idea to get you involved!
The Lake Conference is hosting an Officials Fair on Wednesday, January 22 from 6 - 8 PM in the Edina High School Cafeteria.
We need lower level officials (JV, 10th grade and 9th grade levels) more than ever to give our student-athletes the basic necessity of fair and safe play. We are looking for interested students and adults that want to officiate lower-level games at Hopkins and possibly other Metro area schools. No experience necessary! We will train you to be ready by this spring to specifically help in officiating baseball and softball. The following sports will be represented:Baseball, Softball, Football, Basketball, Hockey, Soccer, Lacrosse, and Wrestling.

Report cards will be made available electronically on Friday, January 31. A parent portal account will give you access to your student's report card and teacher comments, attendance and household contact information. As students move to secondary schools, having parent portal set up becomes even more important.
If you don't have an account, you can request an access code by filling out the Parent Portal Account Request form on this page on the Hopkins Schools website. You will then receive instructions on how to create your account.
If you've set up an account in the past but don't remember your username or password, fill out the same form to request that information.

Hopkins Education Foundation News
The Hopkins Education Foundation (HEF) will be fundraising for a new special project, Outdoor Opportunities, at the Royal Bash gala on March 1 at the Metropolitan Ballroom. Each year, HEF partners with Hopkins Public Schools on a project that will have a districtwide impact. This year’s project will inspire Hopkins students to develop outdoor and leadership skills, build community, and experience joy and connection to the natural world with activities like camping, hiking, canoeing, and more. Funds raised at the Royal Bash will make the class trips listed below possible for students in the District, help the outdoor program acquire more gear, and create an Outdoor Opportunities Fund for scholarships for future trips. We hope this project will create new outdoor traditions for years to come.
Elementary: Fifth grade day trip to YMCA Camp Ihduhapi
Middle School: Eighth grade day trip to YMCA Camp Ihduhapi
High School: Camping trip for up to 120 students
Outdoor Gear: Expand the High School inventory of camping, hiking, and outdoor gear, to help make it possible for all kids to have outdoor learning experiences, regardless of income.
Outdoor Opportunities Fund: Any additional funds raised will be placed in a scholarship fund to make future outdoor trips accessible to our low income families.
Tickets for the Royal Bash are on sale now. Join with parents, teachers, district leaders and community members to celebrate and support at the Royal Bash. Tickets and info at HopkinsEducationFoundation.org.
Tanglen Talent Show
The annual Tanglen Talent Show, sponsored by the PTO, is right around the corner. Tryouts are just weeks away! Students in grades 3, 4 and 5 should start preparing their acts if they wish to be in the show. We’re looking for singers, dancers, musicians, jugglers, magicians, comedians, artists and more. A sign-up sheet for tryouts will soon be on the wall in the Tiger's Den. Students may be in a max of 1 group act and one individual act. At tryouts we expect students to be able to explain what their act will involve (but they won't need to present the act). We also need 5th graders to emcee the event and to help lead the finale act. If you’re a 5th grader and interested in being an emcee, you must prepare a sample intro for an act (real or made up). And, if you are a 5th grader interested in helping with the finale please come with ideas. Try-outs will be held during recess. The 3rd-5th grade Talent Show try-outs are Feb 11 and the 5th grade emcee and finale act leader tryouts will be Feb 13.
Jottings from Jim (Our Principal, Dr. Hebeisen)
This month, our character strength of focus is perseverance. I had the opportunity to visit our fifth grade students on Tuesday as they finished 5 days of learning at STARBASE of Minnesota. On the day I was with our students, they were pretending to program Mars rovers to collect rock samples from the planet's surface. The instructor of one of the sessions was telling the students that they were showing lots of perseverance. It was great to hear how our students were practicing a character strength in a very project-based activity!
By the way...I heard from multiple people at STARBASE how wonderful Tanglen students were during their week of learning. I heard them called hard-working, engaged, and respectful. It was a very proud moment as a principal to hear others bragging on our students! Thanks for all you do to support our students as they grow into their greatness!
