Student Achievement
They have a lot to be thankful for in Ms. Katie’s Class. Her AM class had a special visit and story from Dietz the dog and her PM class had a special visit and Story from Great Grandmom Peggy! They finished their busy day with a wonderful turkey feast and pies!!
Slaybaugh Primary's Kindergarten students had a blast celebrating Thanksgiving!
Ms. Collins’s First Grade class learned all about the origins and history of our Thanksgiving Holiday by learning about the Wampanoag’s and Pilgrims, Governor Bradford, and the First Thanksgiving. We enjoyed learning about our Thanksgiving holiday through the reading of several stories, watching a couple movies on the first Thanksgiving, and much interactive discussion. The children then had fun writing about what they were most thankful for and turning that writing into place mats. We concluded our studies by creating costumes to wear and having a “First Thanksgiving” reenactment in class with a Thanksgiving Feast. A fun time learning was had by all!
Ms. Pellegrini's 2nd grade class made models of the earth's surface and, in the process, learned how rivers flow with their mystery science activity! The love the hands-on activities and the videos! Keep up the great work!
Mrs. Zompa and Ms. Steffan’s class have been discussing erosion and weathering. This week they did an experiment using skittles and water. Each student made their own hypothesis of what would happen if you put water on a skittle. Students alternated dripping water onto a skittle and recording their observations in a packet. Inside the packet, they had to both draw and write down what they observed. Afterward, they wrote down how the experiment related to the process of water erosion. The water represented rain, the skittle represented a rock, and the colored dye (on the skittle) represented the bits and pieces of rocks that come off from weathering. They all did a really nice job with the experiment (and with not eating the skittles that were experimented on 😜). The whole class had a lot of fun!
Mrs. Swigert’s “Turk and Runt Thanksgiving Comedy”
Ms. Russnak's 3rd grade class collected milk jugs and created turkey masterpieces that were donated to the Salvation Army Thanksgiving Dinner! They got word from the organizers of the event that their goofy turkeys warmed hearts and brought smiles to the guests of the dinner! In fact, they were so well received that we were asked to create decorations for the Christmas dinner! The children were so excited to be able to make a difference again!
Ms. Sawyers 3rd grade class read 'Snowmen at Night' and created their own snowmen and wrote about what they do at night!
Ms. Nardone’s technology classes are working on writing about gifts they would give to the world this week. They are learning to use Alexa for a little extra help to spell those tricky words.
Climate and Culture
This week in Ms. Katie's class they are trying to get that gingerbread man across the river... without the help of the Fox! In their centers they will explore how gingerbread is made, design and sew their own Gingerbread people and houses. They are matching gingerbread upper and lowercase letter men to the sound house and retelling the story with their own endings!
It’s amazing the projects that pop up at Slaybaugh! Ms. Kauffman, Mrs. Stom and Mrs.Sheeran made this idea a reality! What a fantastic addition!
