Renaissance Faire
The Alberta seniors hosted the Keysville seniors for the annual Ren Faire on March 8 as a celebration of their studies in World Literature, British Literature, and Creative Writing. The Alberta students created tents and booths on topics such as war skills, architecture, the physics of the trebuchet, flowers and the making of floral crowns, artists and artwork, textiles, weaving and needlepoint, the practices of dueling, bread making techniques, tea etiquette and readings, Tarot readings, and jewelry making. A good time was had by all as students enjoyed good food and good cheer and supported each other while getting to know each other better.
SVCC's Poetry and Art Contest
Congratulations to junior Rayna Aranzamendez and senior Rafferty Lee for their first-place and second-place poetry wins at SVCC's inaugural poetry and art contest.
Gatsby Gala
The Keysville juniors hosted the Alberta juniors for the annual Gatsby Gala on March 29. During the Gala, the students embodied the heart, soul, and spirit of The Roaring 20s and the great American novel. The Keysville juniors prepared interactive activities to share that included historical, cultural, and social aspects of the decades. One of the greatest parts of GSSV is how immersive we can be with out content.
Seniors iFLY
The STEM seniors at Alberta participated in an indoor skydiving experience at iFLY in Virginia Beach. Students learned about the effects of frontal surface area, the mechanics of the wind tunnel, and different features of parachutes. They calculated frontal surface area which was used to find terminal velocity. After a lesson on attaining and maintaining their body position, students suited up and went skydiving! They had loads of fun as they spun, dipped, and floated in the air. They discovered the smallest change in body position had an immediate effect on their flight pattern. Of course, such an awesome experience had to be followed by ice cream!
Senior Research Symposium
Our seniors presented their 18 month research projects the third week of April at the Estes Center in Chase City. These students have spent countless hours selecting and researching a topic, organizing and conducting their experiment, and analyzing and presenting their data. It took a lot of courage from these students to present their findings to an audience of their peers, parents, and school representative, but they did a wonderful job, and we are so proud of them.
Senior D.C. Trip
Some seniors wrapped up their senior year by participating in the annual senior trip to Washington, D. C. in late April. The students had time exploring the mall, visiting museums, and touring the White House. All students visited either the Holocaust Museum or the African American History Museum to enhance the material and novels they have read in class. We also had a group dinner and tested our critical thinking and team work skills in an escape room. Proud to say all groups escaped with time to spare!
Many memories were made on this final field trip of GSSV for these seniors!
