VMS ELKS Roundup
September 20, 2024
Dear VMS Families,
What an incredible week it has been at VMS! Our Homecoming Week was a fantastic celebration of school spirit, community, and traditions. From the creative dress-up days to the energetic lunches with students excited for tonight's game, it was a joy to see students and staff come together to show their ELK pride.
Highlights of the week included:
- Spirit Days: Our students went all out, showcasing their creativity and enthusiasm with themed outfits. From Student-Teacher Swap to As Elks-We Wear Red Thursday, the energy in the hallways was infectious!
- Parade: Our Homecoming Parade is a colorful display of floats, music, and school spirit. Special thanks to the high school and all the clubs and organizations that participate!
- Big Game: Tonight's game will be the highlight of the week as our Elk River Elks take the field for the Homecoming Game. I'm sure the stands will be packed with supportive fans. As a reminder to our young fans, from elementary through middle school, they will not be allowed to attend without a parent, guardian or supervising adult in attendance.
Let’s carry this positive energy into the rest of the school year. Go ELKS!

Taking notes helps students remember what they learn
Taking notes can benefit students in many ways. Creating a written record helps students remember what the teacher said in class. Reviewing class notes is also an effective way to study for tests. To get the most from note-taking, your middle schooler should:
• Take notes by hand rather than with a computer if possible. A recent study shows that writing by hand aids in learning and memory.
• Think about what is important. Your child should listen for names, dates, times of events and other key information. And if the teacher writes something on the board, your child should include it.
• Review and rewrite notes after class. Rewriting them ensures your child will be able to read them. It also helps the information stick in your child’s mind.
• Enlist a friend. Your child can compare notes with a classmate. Maybe the friend picked up something your child missed.
• Stay organized. Encourage your child to use a binder that has different sections, labeled with the name of each class. Suggest putting the date on notes and fling them in the appropriate section.
