YHS Scheduling: incoming freshmen
Scheduling for the 2025-26 school year
High School scheduling
Welcome to Yorktown High School! This newsletter is designed to assist you through the scheduling process. All freshmen will be prescheduled in English, social studies, math, science, science lab/ physical education, and world language (if applicable). All students will be scheduled for a lunch period as room permits. Freshman schedules allow room to select one elective.
Incoming freshmen will have an opportunity to select an elective class (i.e. art, music, health, husker discovery) to supplement their academic program at the high school. This newsletter will provide you with links and information about freshman elective options. Please review the online 9th grade course directory as well as the choices available to you on the Incoming Freshman Elective Selection link.
Elective requests must be completed through the STUDENT school email account
What do I need to do now?
Step 1: Watch slide presentation video
Step 2: Review 9th grade course directory
Review the online 9th grade course directory (see link in this newsletter). Elective courses available to freshmen, course descriptions, video descriptions and any prerequisites are listed in this directory. See link below.
Step 3: Complete the Incoming Freshman Elective Selection link
Select the link to the google form. Follow the instructions on the Incoming Elective Selection form, complete and submit. Due date: April 1, 2025
Every effort will be made to schedule students in one of their elective choices. Academic courses take precedence over elective courses. In the event an elective class cannot be scheduled, we will do our best to select from the alternative options. See link below.
Art or music & health is required for graduation
When planning for your freshman elective, please keep in mind that one full year of art or music and one semester of health is a requirement for graduation. If you do not select either of these options on the Incoming Freshman Elective form, you will have to enroll in these courses in future years which can impact future elective courses.
IMPORTANT!
Elective requests must be submitted through the STUDENT school email account
The above link to the Incoming Elective Selection form must be completed and submitted through the student email address. Students, please discuss with your parents, and submit through your Yorktown school email.

Some students who have additional supports, skills, and resource may take them in place of their electives or during their lunch period. As students progress in high school, there will be additional opportunities in their schedules to add more electives.
What if I change my mind after I submit my course selection sheet?
We understand that student interests evolve as the year progresses and they may wish to adjust their elective choices after they submit their form. Having a clear understanding of the courses you selected is an important step when you initially sign up for your classes.
However, students who wish to change their elective course selections should email yorktownhighscheduling@yorktown.org by May of this school year.
Timeline
- March: 8th graders are provided with the Incoming Freshman Selection Elective link, course directory and introduction video. A high school panel of students will visit the middle school 8th graders in March to talk about high school and answer questions.
- June: 8th graders will be invited over to tour the high school. Our Big Buddy student ambassador's will provide tours of our classrooms, gymnasium, library, cafeteria and offices.
- Summer: The master schedule is built and freshmen are placed in their academic and elective courses. Every effort is made to place students in one of their elective choices. However, academic courses take precedence over electives. If your first elective choice is not able to be scheduled, we will make every effort to schedule you in one of your alternative choices.
- August: schedules for the new school year are posted to the PARENT portal towards the end of August. Parents need to sign the RUP agreement when they first login to the portal in order for the parent and student to have access to their schedule as well as the teacher gradebook.
- September: Freshmen will meet with their Big Buddy on the first day of school. Big Buddies will assist freshmen with understanding their schedule, locating classes, opening their lockers, and answering questions about the high school. Only freshmen and their Big Buddies will be in the building at that time. Upper classmen will join the following school day.
