A Word From Mrs. Loor
A huge thank you to all the parent volunteers who took the time to put presentations together and come in to speak to our students about their STEAM careers. Thank you to Mrs. Brown for organizing and scheduling all the wonderful presentations. We learned so much about all the different fields you can go into with a STEAM background. I hope your children felt inspired and learned about potential careers.
Our 5th graders went to Biztown last week. They visited a simulated town where they experienced operating banks, managing restaurants, writing checks, and even voting for a mayor. Students were able to connect the dots between what they learn in school and the real world. Please see below for pictures from these two great events.
As I had mentioned in my Back to School Night speech, our theme this year is "Flying Higher Together." Our students and staff are continually working every day to build and maintain a positive class and school culture. As part of this work, the Summit Public Schools have partnered with the Anti-Defamation League and joined their No Place for Hate initiative. The ADL is a leading anti-hate organization that is inspiring a generation of students to challenge bias in themselves, others, and society in order to create more inclusive learning communities. In our partnership with them, they will help us to continue to build inclusive and safe communities in which respect and equity are the goals and where all students can thrive. Students will participate in lessons throughout the year with these goals in mind.
In addition, the PTO and I would like your feedback on what parenting topics are important to you so we can continue to grow as a school community. Parenting is a marathon and the journey is much more enjoyable if we have our village supporting us, cheering us on, and even at times, consoling us. Please take a minute to fill out the survey below. Thank you!
Have a marvelous week!
With Warmest Regards,
Mrs. Loor

Coughs - What Parents need to Know
The NJ Department of Health and the CDC have reported an increase in childhood respiratory illness this fall, including both pneumonia and RSV. Respiratory illnesses are easily spread by coughing and sneezing. One of the best ways to control the spread of illness is to practice good hand washing and other hygiene techniques, such as coughing into a sleeve. Most importantly, if your child appears ill or is exhibiting any of the signs and symptoms listed below, please keep them home from school and follow up with your child’s doctor.
Cough
Coughing is an important reflex and most coughs are a normal part of a cold. Coughs can be dry (no mucus) or wet (with clear, white, yellow or green mucus). Coughing up mucus is the way the body clears the lungs and protects the lungs.
What's Normal?
White or clear mucus often accompanies a viral respiratory illness and/or seasonal allergies. Yellow or green mucus may be a sign of a bacterial infection.
Trouble breathing is a reason to see a doctor right away. Call the doctor if
There is a fever that accompanies the cough.
The area around the ribcage is pulling in and out with each breath, or the nostrils are flaring.
Your child is breathing faster than normal.
There is chest pain when breathing in or out.
The lips, face or fingernails appear bluish.
You hear “noisy” breathing, wheezing, whistling or harsh sounds when breathing in or out.
What to do for a cough?
To decrease the irritation or tickle in the throat you can give warm clear fluids.
Stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids such as water.
Use a humidifier in the home.
Consult with your physician prior to administering any over-the- counter cough and cold medicines.
If you have any medical questions or concerns never hesitate to reach out to our school nurse, Ann Zanelli. Her email is azanelli@summit.k12.nj.us.
