A Note to our Parents
Dear Parents,
Thank you to everyone who has taken the 5 Essentials survey so far. Both schools remain short of the number of parent responses needed to receive a score report - so we NEED your help! We are asking families to respond to the annual 5 Essentials survey to inform our continued school improvement work. Through March, we are asking our families to participate in the annual 5 Essentials Survey administration. Reports will be sent to schools and districts in late spring of 2024 and will also be included in the State School Report Card.
The survey is administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago on behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education. It gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. These five indicators that affect and predict school success are:
· Effective Leaders
· Collaborative Teachers
· Involved Families
· Supportive Environments
· Ambitious Instruction
During the month of February, parents are encouraged to participate in this year's 5 Essentials Parent Supplement Survey. This information has been helpful to both the MIlne and Kelvin school leadership teams in developing past school improvement plans and we would like to continue to receive feedback from caregivers. As a parent, you will be asked to share your thoughts on important elements of our schools' effectiveness. Families with children at both schools are asked to complete one survey for each school. If at least 20 percent of each school's families complete this survey, a parent supplement report will be generated. Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child.
The Illinois 5Essentials Parent Survey Supplement collection window for D91 is now through March 2024. To take the survey please visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/
For more information about the Illinois 5Essentials Survey, or to view previous years’ Reports, please visit https://www.5-essentials.org/illinois.

Registration for the 24-25 School Year Opens March 18th!
Kindergarten Roundup (March 18-April 18):
Lockport School District 91's Milne Grove School will offer a digital Kindergarten Round-up for the 2024-2025 school year from March 18 - April 18, 2024. During this window, families can access our registration webpage and complete the student registration electronically. Caregivers that would like assistance can make an appointment with our registrar, Mrs. Dragosh, by emailing cdragosh@d91.net or calling 815-838-0737x1104. On April 18, the district will offer an in-person opportunity to finalize registrations; families can walk in at Milne Grove Door G between 3:30-6pm to use a device, drop off documents, and check out our building. Students that are fully registered by April 18th will be eligible to attend a kindergarten preview session in May.
Click here to join our mailing list and make sure you receive all the registration information and links for our full day kindergarten program. Please note that in order to register for the 24-25 school year, students need to be at least 5 years old on or before September 1, 2024.
In order to be complete, registrations must include a completed electronic registration, the child's birth certificate, guardian's driver's license, and notarized custody form. Residency compliance will be accomplished with a technology tool this year; only families flagged for verification or those living with a district resident will be required to submit proof of residency. Health documents are required prior to the start of school in August. For program information, please contact the school principal, Mrs. Koziol at jkoziol@d91.net. The D91 Boundary Map is included for your reference below.
Returning and New Student Early Bird Registration (March 18 - May 30):
Returning student registration will open March 18th and extend through May 30th. Families that complete their registration and pay in full or make the first payment of an installment plan by May 30th at 6pm will enjoy the early bird registration rate. Residency compliance will be accomplished with a technology tool again this year; only families flagged for verification or those living with a district resident will be required to submit proof of residency. On May 30th, the district will offer an in-person opportunity to finalize registrations; families can walk in at KG door 4 between 3:30-6pm to use a device, drop off documents, etc.
Returning & New Student Regular Registration (May 31 - July 18):
On May 31st, the regular registration window begins and the early bird registration rate will no longer be available. Residency compliance will be accomplished with a technology tool again this year; only families flagged for verification or those living with a district resident will be required to submit proof of residency. Families that need in person service and registration assistance are invited to attend one of the two drop in dates at Kelvin Grove Door 4, June 13th from 3 - 6pm & July 18th between 8am-10am or 4pm-6pm. The registrar will be on hand to answer questions about residency documents and receive forms. Devices will also be available for those who do not have access to technology. Families may also request a 1:1 registration appointment by emailing cdragosh@d91.net. Having accurate registration numbers as early as possible is essential to assigning classroom placements and finalizing staffing assignments; your cooperation in registering in a timely manner is appreciated.
Late Registration (July 19 & beyond):
Late registration begins on July 19th. Students registering during this timeframe may not receive their schedule/class assignment on time.
D91's Spring Day is Friday, March 8, 2024, at both buildings.
Order your perfect package online at https://mylifetouch.com using the Picture Day ID codes below or return the form that was sent home with your child!
With the shift to online ordering, it is impossible for school personnel to know whether or not your family placed an order, so all children will be photographed. Please let the office know if you do not want your child to be photographed.

Notes from the Health Offices
National Nutrition Month is an annual campaign that runs throughout the month of March.
Nutrition doesn’t end with what we eat ~ exercise is just as important as a balanced diet!
Nutrition: the process of providing or obtaining the food necessary for health and growth.
Poor nutrition can lead to fatigue, digestive problems, weight gain, and food allergies. Making informed choices about the foods you eat helps to achieve optimum health.
Water should be our drink of choice. If you need something added to it for flavor in order to avoid sugary drinks, add some berries or a few slices of cucumber with a lime wedge and a mint leaf! You will get the benefits of flavor with natural sugars, rather than added sugars.
Local Farmer Markets are a great way to incorporate fruits and vegetables into your meals. Farmer Markets typically run from around Memorial Day - Labor Day.
One piece of nutrition that I feel is often overlooked is reading a food label on the ingredients/food that we are purchasing. The food label tells us important information such as specific ingredients along with nutritional value of the product. The first three ingredients listed are typically what the food is mostly made of - we should reconsider the product if one of the first three ingredients includes sugar or a form of sugar. If you are unfamiliar with the other names for sugar, you can find them here. If you are unsure how to read a food label, the FDA does a nice job of explaining it here.
I’ve always appreciated these visuals to help understand how much sugar truly is in each of these drinks. Sugar damages our bodies from the inside, out. Large amounts of sugar that is consumed daily contributes to high blood pressure, inflammation in our bodies, weight gain, etc. These secondary health conditions put us at a much higher risk for a stroke, fatty liver disease, a heart attack, etc.
Whether eating at home or dining out, be sure that you are choosing meals that are full of nutrients. Including fruit and proteins with breakfast, and meat and veggies with dinner can make a big difference in your health. The USDA myPlate website has quite a bit of valuable information along with recipes! Pinterest is one of my favorites to look for new, healthy recipes for my family!

Counseling/Social Work News
As March approaches us an important week to recognize is March 10th - 16th. This week is known as Sleep Awareness Week. We are excited to highlight the importance of quality sleep for our students. Adequate sleep does not only enhance academic performance but also plays a vital role in students' social and emotional well-being.
Research shows that a good night's sleep positively impacts a student's cognitive abilities, concentration, and overall mood. Therefore, you are encouraged to use Sleep Awareness Week as an opportunity to discuss the importance of healthy sleep habits with your children.
Establishing a consistent sleep routine is a key aspect of promoting better sleep. By setting regular bedtimes and creating a bedtime ritual, students can improve their sleep hygiene. A well rested student is better able to handle challenges of school life balancing school work, social life, and extracurricular activities.
You are strongly recommended to emphasize the importance of sleep as a foundation for overall health and wellbeing. Encourage your child to prioritize rest, limit screen time before bedtime, and create a peaceful sleep environment.
Sleep helps promote various aspects of well-being, including cognitive function, memory consolidation, emotional resilience, and overall physical health. By prioritizing sleep, we contribute not only to the student's academic success but also to the development of resilient, emotionally balanced individuals.
Thank you for supporting the wellbeing of your child(ren).
