Swim Unit Information
Hi families of WIS! In the next few weeks all of our students will have the opportunity to explore the amazing resource we have here in our district known as the Angie O'Donnell Aquatic Center! Each grade level will have a week where they learn about swimming and the great experiences that the pool has to offer us. Here is a brief slide show of the information we will discuss with your student prior to the unit as well as the general swim schedule. Thanks for supporting our students as they explore this great lifelong skill!

Spring Conferences March 11-15
Dear Waubesa Families,
We’re excited to inform you about our upcoming spring conferences. Thank you for your ongoing partnership with your students’ teachers and our school community. A strong home-school partnership is critical in student success. As a reminder, there are four opportunities for us to formally communicate student progress with families.
Two conference opportunities. One is in the fall, and the other is in the spring. Families are encouraged to communicate with teachers beyond these scheduled conferences.
Report cards are made available on Infinite Campus after each semester.
We are offering, but not requiring spring conferences for your student(s) with conference week set for March 11-15. Please know there’s flexibility to schedule a conference outside of this week to accommodate the various demands on family and staff schedules. After reviewing your student’s first semester report card (in Infinite Campus Parent Portal), you can determine your preference for spring conferences. We’re offering both in-person and virtual conference options again, or you may also indicate no conference requested and communicate any questions via email. Your student’s teacher may reach out directly to schedule a conference with you.
As always, the goal of conferences is to highlight what your student is doing well and ways we can work together to support them. Soon, you’ll hear from your student’s homeroom teacher to choose an option: connect via email, virtual, in-person, or you may also indicate no conference requested. To help make the conferences efficient and effective and so teachers are prepared to provide answers and/or strategies during the conference, please communicate any questions and/or concerns prior to the conference.
Related Arts Open House conferences will occur on Thursday, March 14, from 3:30-7:30 p.m. Families are welcome to meet with the Related Arts teachers to discuss the exciting activities we have been working on and check in and see how their students are doing. Some of the Related Arts teachers will be located in their teaching space (Such as the Art Room, Music Room, or Computer lab) while others will be in the library (such as Mrs. Evans, Mr. Williquette, Mr. Hartlaub, and Mrs. Lau). We cannot wait to share the Related Arts experience with you and your family.
Thank you for your collaborative partnership with us as we support your student(s). Please reach out if you have any questions.
Kind regards,
Corey Shefchik - Principal
Kelly Vetter - Associate Principal
School Safety: HOLD Drill
School safety is a priority in the McFarland School District. At WIS, we take several steps to ensure your child is safe and our school is secure. A critical component of our safety plan is ensuring that students and staff members are prepared in the event that we need the hallways clear due to a medical situation/emergency, a student is in need of privacy due to a behavior issue, or there is a facility issue (e.g. water leak from bathroom, etc.).
During today's drill, we made an announcement that clearly explained to students that today was a drill. During this drill, the students and staff continued instruction as usual as would be the response during an actual Hold incident. The entire procedure lasted approximately ten minutes. During the classroom discussions during the drill (and during the conclusion of the drill), students were reminded that schools are often some of the safest places to be and that these skills students and staff learn about safety can be applied anywhere, both in school and out of school. Our goal is always to make this experience a useful practice of the procedures, without alarming students.
If you have any questions about the drill, please feel free to contact Kelly Vetter, Associate Principal, at any time at 838-4609.
Youth Art Month
March is Youth Art Month! In celebration, student art will be displayed in the E.D. Locke Public Library for the month of March. Opening reception is Thursday, March 7 from 5:30-7PM.
Activity Fees
We are gearing up for the second half of the year which includes 2nd semester activity fees. In an effort to make sure all fees have been paid please double check your students fee section in Infinite Campus. If you are unable to pay the fee please reach out to your student's teacher. Please look for 2nd semester activity fees in your IC account in March.

Staff Learning Highlight: Inclusive Hiring Practices
On Friday, February 16, the McFarland Administrative Council Team participated in a day-long training on “Inclusive Hiring Practices” provided by the CESA 6 Center4All. We learned about best practices in hiring and reflected on our current practices, with much work ahead of us. This relates directly to our strategic plan objective to “Actively Recruit and Retain a diverse staff representative of a global society.” Thank you families for providing us this time without students to improve the district!

Health Services
WIS Families, please review MSD's Lice Policies, found here and linked above. You will find a list of excellent resources under the "Resources" tab in this policy as well as on the MSD Health Service Website, which explains the rationale for our current policies as well as education on how to reduce the spread of lice. While lice certainly can be a nuisance, it is important to note that lice do not spread disease. If you have any further questions about these policies, symptoms to look for, how to treat lice or seeking tips on how to decrease the spread of lice, please contact District Nurse, Stephanie Peplinski, (608) 838-4679 peplins@mcfsd.org or the WIS Health Office (608)838-4673.
